Air conditioning across SL4: what to expect

Air conditioning isn’t only for summer: most modern splits heat too. The Energy Saving Trust recognises that air-to-air heat pumps often go by the name air conditioning, and a well-chosen system can earn its keep all year round. The work covers air-to-air heat pumps, multi-split systems and wall-mounted split systems, and people most often call us about commercial rooms that are too warm for staff and an old system that needs replacing.

The work area is kept tidy throughout, with dust sheets down and offcuts and packaging cleared up. Any holes, fixings or cable routes are agreed with you before we drill. The visit takes a day or more, depending on the number of rooms, the pipe routes and the access.

  1. We survey the property, or work from your pictures for a simple job.
  2. The system is sized, positions are agreed and the price is fixed.
  3. Sheets go down first, then the indoor unit and the condenser are mounted.
  4. Pipework, cable and drain are run, the circuit is connected and the pipework is pressure tested and evacuated.
  5. We commission, show you the controls and leave the F-Gas and warranty paperwork.

Pricing in SL4

Height, access and the distance between the indoor and outdoor units all affect the cost. We take each of them into account, and the price is fixed before we start.

Where we install in SL4

Planning rules are the same across England, SL4 included: an air-to-air system that heats as well as cools can be permitted development on a house, but cooling-only units, listed buildings and outdoor units facing a road in conservation areas need more care.

Enquiries from SL4 get a reply on the working day they arrive. For a breakdown, use the 24/7 line.

Windsor: With historic houses such as St Leonard's Hill about 1 mile south-west, it’s a reminder that older homes nearby may be listed, which changes the planning rules. If your home is in one of the older streets near All Saints Church, it’s worth checking whether it’s listed or in a conservation area before an install.

Aftercare tips

Once we have finished, these simple steps help:

  • Shut doors and windows when it’s on
  • Use moderate settings for comfort and economy
  • Keep to the service interval the manufacturer recommends
  • Let filters dry fully before you put them back

If anything is not right after we’ve gone, call us on the same number. Tell us what the system is doing, and any code on the display and we will help you sort it out.

Book an annual service. A service cleans what you can’t reach and picks up faults before they stop the system, and it keeps any warranty servicing conditions in order.

System by system

Offices, shops and commercial rooms

Systems over 12 kW of effective rated output bring extra duties for the building, such as a TM44 inspection by an accredited energy assessor at least every 5 years. We can arrange and prepare for it.

Pipework and condensate drains

After the pipework is fitted, the refrigerant circuit is pressure tested and evacuated, which keeps moisture and air out of the circuit. The results go into the commissioning records.

Landlords, agents and facilities managers

Landlords, letting agents and managing agents book us, not only the people who live or work in the property. Let us know who will give us access and who the records should go to, and we’ll keep everyone informed.

Larger air conditioning systems in buildings need more than servicing: systems with an effective rated output over 12 kW need a TM44 inspection by an accredited energy assessor at least every 5 years. We arrange the inspection, get the system ready and put right anything it picks up.

Why it fails

Most overheating comes from heat gained through the day. Sun through large windows, roof lights and glazed doors is the biggest source in many rooms, and the heat lingers long after the sun has moved round.

Common reasons people call us are:

  • Uncertainty over the right type and size of system
  • Expensive direct electric heating
  • A room that is unbearable on warm days
  • A business premises that overheats in summer

SL4 questions

How does the warranty work?

It’s the manufacturer’s, and the terms are theirs. Some terms depend on regular servicing by a qualified engineer so it’s worth keeping the service records.

Can you set up regular servicing?

Yes. Maintenance contracts are part of what we do, set at the interval the system and the manufacturer’s terms need. Every visit is recorded, with F-Gas records where refrigerant work is involved.

Will skipping a service affect the warranty?

It can, for some brands. Read the manufacturer’s terms, or send us the make and model and we will explain them and stick to the interval they set.

Which type of system should I choose?

There’s no single best type. Wall-mounted splits suit single rooms, multi-splits run several rooms from one outdoor unit, ducted systems hide the unit in the ceiling, and cassettes suit offices and larger rooms. We recommend one on the survey and explain why.

When will I hear back?

The same working day. After that, we agree a survey, diagnosis or installation date that suits you, and you get a fixed price before any work goes ahead.

How long does air conditioning installation take?

Allow about a day for a single-room system, longer for multi-room and ducted systems. The survey tells us how long your installation will need, so you can plan around it.
