Air conditioning in RG42: how it works

Think of it as diagnose, treat and sign off: the survey diagnoses what the rooms need, the installation is the treatment and commissioning is the sign-off. The sign-off includes testing every mode, showing you the controls and handing over the F-Gas records. Common call-outs are for rooms that get too hot to sleep or work in and an ageing air conditioning system near the end of its life, across ceiling cassettes, air-to-air heat pumps and VRF systems.

Every visit follows the same order: agree the plan on site, protect the area, do the work, test what we’ve done and talk you through it. The visit itself takes about a day for a single-room system, longer for multi-room and ducted systems.

  1. You send photos, or we visit and survey the rooms and outside.
  2. The system is sized, positions are agreed and the price is fixed.
  3. We protect the area, then fit both halves of the system.
  4. We run and connect the pipes, cable and drain, then pressure test and evacuate the circuit.
  5. The system is commissioned, the controls explained and the F-Gas records handed over.

What you will pay

The price reflects the work, not guesswork. That is why we look at the job first, from pictures or on a survey, and why the quote is fixed before work begins.

VAT is set out clearly on every quote, and the rate that applies to your job is stated. VAT can differ between homes and businesses and between kinds of work, so we confirm it in writing rather than guess. To get one, phone us on 07833 053749 or drop us a line.

Priestwood: Plenty of people near Bracknell station split the week between the train and a spare room, and that spare room is often the first to get a unit. Homes near St Andrew are a good example of where we look up the heritage status of the building before fixing anything to it.

Aftercare tips

A little care keeps the system in better shape. We recommend:

  • Flag any change in how the system sounds or performs
  • Book an annual service
  • Clean the filters every few weeks when the system is in heavy use
  • Keep the outdoor unit clear of leaves, plants and clutter

An annual service keeps the system running efficiently, and some manufacturers make regular servicing a condition of their warranty. We will remind you when it’s due if you’d like.

Book an annual service. A service cleans what you cannot reach and picks up faults before they stop the system, and it keeps any warranty servicing conditions in order.

Why it fails

Commercial spaces gain heat from people, equipment, lighting and glazing. Comfortable staff and customers are the usual reason businesses get in touch, and some rooms need cooling for the equipment as much as the people.

Customers normally contact us when they notice something like this:

  • Rooms under the roof that stay hot into the night
  • Uncertainty over the right type and size of system
  • Rooms that get too hot to sleep or work in
  • Rooms heated by plug-in heaters

When it’s something else

We will always give you a straight diagnosis, so here’s what air conditioning won’t do:

  • Work that needs permission from a landlord or the council
  • Stuffy rooms that need fresh air rather than cooling
  • Problems with a gas boiler or the radiators

Managing agents and facilities teams in RG42

Whether it’s one property or many, the approach is the same: diagnosis, a fixed price, access agreed with the people on site and paperwork at the end.

If you look after several properties, we can quote and plan the work across all of them. Each property gets its own records, so each one has its own history.

Questions from RG42

How does the warranty work?

It’s the manufacturer’s, and the terms are theirs. Some brands make regular servicing a condition, so keep your service records.

Will skipping a service affect the warranty?

For some brands, yes. Read the manufacturer’s terms, or send us the make and model and we’ll explain them, and book the service at the interval they recommend.

Will you need to do electrical work?

Most of the time, yes: a dedicated circuit is needed. Under Part P, a new circuit has to be notified unless a registered competent person does it, and we are NICEIC approved, so we can install and certify it.

Can we book visits on a schedule?

Yes. Tell us what you have and how it’s used, and we’ll suggest a schedule with a fixed price. Leak checks required by the F-gas rules can be built in for larger systems.

Do I get paperwork after the visit?

Yes. Every visit is written up, including F-Gas records for any refrigerant work. Keep them with the manual and the warranty documents.

Which type of air conditioning is best?

Number of rooms, space outside and how much of the unit you want to see all decide it. Ducted systems need a ceiling void or loft, and cassettes need a suspended ceiling and the survey confirms what’s possible.

Can I use air conditioning to heat a room?

In most cases, yes. A heat pump moves heat from the outside air into the room, so it gives out more heat than the electricity it uses. If you want it to replace your main heating, ask about air-to-air heat pumps and the conditions for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant.
