Air source heat pumps for Cyprus

Air source heat pumps in Cyprus, done properly

Air source heat pumps collect heat from outdoor air and bring it inside with electricity running the compressor and fans. It works on the same principle as air conditioning, run the other way and the Energy Saving Trust notes that air-to-air heat pumps are sometimes referred to as air conditioning. If the problem is no space for a hot water cylinder and a boiler that’s getting old, we can help.

For flats in Cyprus, the lease, the freeholder and the rules for flats all come into it. Permitted development limits are different for flats, so we check the position before we design.

AirCon Doctor is an F-Gas certified company and NICEIC approved for electrical work, with MCS certification for heat pumps and Checkatrade membership. Refrigerant work is done by engineers who hold the F-gas qualifications the law requires.

How the visit works

On the day, we arrive at the time agreed with you and run through the plan before anything else. Dust sheets go down over floors and anything close to the work, and the electrics are made safe before any panel comes off. The work itself takes a few days for most air-to-water installations, with air-to-air systems often quicker. In a London area like Cyprus, parking and access are worth sorting out before the day.

  1. It begins with your house and the heating it relies on now.
  2. We measure heat loss for every room.
  3. From those figures we size the heat pump and decide on radiators, cylinder and outdoor position.
  4. You get a fixed price, with any grant and the VAT set out.
  5. Then it’s fitted, commissioned and registered with MCS.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Move furniture away from the wall where we’ll be working
  • Unlock any gate, garage or side passage we need
  • Let us know if the units are on a roof, a high wall or in a locked area

Some jobs can be priced from pictures, while others need a survey. Multi-room systems, commercial buildings and anything with a long or hidden pipe route are normally surveyed first. Either way, you get a fixed price before any work is booked.

Why it’s worth doing now in Cyprus

Permitted development rules can change, and conditions vary between properties. Checking the position for your home at the survey stage avoids surprises later covering listed buildings, conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. Getting the work done in Cyprus before summer avoids the busiest weeks.

Whatever the property, the quote works the same way: the equipment, the access, the work involved and the time it takes. Ask for a fixed-price quote and we will go through it with you.

Air source heat pumps around Cyprus

About 42% of homes in the Cyprus area have been built since 2000, according to VOA council tax data, and about 56% of households live in flats, according to the 2021 Census. Lower heat loss in recent homes often means a smaller heat pump and fewer radiator changes. For flats, the first questions are where an outdoor unit could go, whether a cylinder fits and what the lease allows. In London, outside space and the rules for flats often decide which kind of heat pump suits.

Period properties close to St Michael and All Angels Church can suit a heat pump, though insulation and any heritage protection are checked first.

  • Disconnecting or servicing a gas boiler

Cyprus questions

Is planning permission needed for a heat pump in Cyprus?

It depends on the property. Around 3 listed entries sit within 0.5 miles of central Cyprus. On a house, an air source heat pump can often go ahead under permitted development, with an outdoor unit of no more than 1.5 cubic metres and an installation that meets MCS 020(a), which includes a noise check. Those rights do not reach the grounds of a listed building, and conservation areas rule out walls or roofs facing a road. If that might affect you, we ask Newham council, which is normally the planning authority for Cyprus.

Does the Boiler Upgrade Scheme cover homes in Cyprus?

Cyprus is covered, as the scheme runs across England and Wales. The amount depends on the type of heat pump, and the survey confirms which applies. As an MCS certified installer, we apply for it on your behalf.

Can I fit air conditioning or a heat pump myself?

The refrigerant side has to be done by a qualified engineer working for an F-Gas certified company. That is the law, not just our preference, and manufacturers expect it for their warranty too. We’re happy to quote for the full job, supply to commissioning.

How long will it take to install a heat pump?

As a guide, it takes from a couple of days to around a week, depending on the system and how much of the heating changes. The programme is planned to keep time without heating short and agreed before any work starts.

How do you keep the place clean during the work?

We start with protection: sheets over the floor and nearby furniture. Holes and fixings are agreed with you, and we clean up afterwards before we leave.

Is the equipment covered by a warranty?

It’s the manufacturer’s warranty, which varies by brand. Daikin, for example, gives a standard 2 years on split air conditioning and we explain the terms for your brand on the quote.

What’s the difference between air-to-water and air-to-air heat pumps?

Air-to-water replaces the boiler for heating and hot water, while air-to-air heats and cools rooms, and we help you choose. We install both types.

When to call us in Cyprus

Air-to-air systems interest people who want cooling in summer as well as heating. They warm rooms directly through indoor units and switch to cooling in warm weather. Whether a grant applies depends on the scheme conditions.

Most people get in touch when they notice one of these:

  • Choosing between air-to-water and air-to-air
  • Questions about listed buildings or conservation areas
  • A boiler that’s getting old

With Eastbury Manor House about 2.3 miles north-east, it’s worth asking whether your own home is listed before planning a heat pump.

What to look for in a quote

  • Whether the quote shows VAT clearly
  • Why the equipment they’re quoting suits the job
  • Whether extra work needs your approval first
