Air source heat pumps in East Ham

How we handle air source heat pumps in East Ham

Hot water from an air-to-water system is stored in a cylinder. If you have a combi boiler and no cylinder, the survey looks at where one could go. With air-to-air, hot water has to come from something else. The work covers underfloor heating, air-to-air heat pumps and air-to-water heat pumps, and the jobs we see most are finding a place for the outdoor unit and wanting to stop using oil, LPG or gas for heating.

In a London area like East Ham, many homes are flats or terraces with little outside space, and that decides which kind of heat pump works. An air-to-water system needs space outside and normally a hot water cylinder inside, while an air-to-air system needs less space.

We are an F-Gas certified company, NICEIC approved for electrical work, MCS certified for heat pumps and a Checkatrade member. Our engineers hold the F-gas qualifications needed to work on refrigerant.

What you can do yourself, and what needs us

Good habits make our visits easier, not unnecessary. Clean filters and a clear outdoor unit help the system run as it should, but the refrigerant circuit, the electrics and the parts you cannot see still need an engineer at the interval the manufacturer recommends.

There are a few things you can safely do yourself: keeping the outdoor unit clear, checking the mode and set temperature, and the routine cleaning in the manual. Opening up the units, the electrics and the refrigerant circuit are a job for us.

What the work involves, system by system

Air-to-air heat pumps

A £2,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant is available for air-to-air only if it replaces the fossil-fuel heating and meets the full heating demand. It must be installed by an MCS certified installer and be in a home.

Outdoor unit position and planning

Permitted development conditions in England include an outdoor unit of no more than 1.5 m³ and must meet MCS 020(a) and not be used solely for cooling. Listed building curtilages are excluded.

Air source heat pumps around East Ham

About 55% of homes across East Ham and its surrounding area were built before 1919, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax records, and about 45% of households live in terraced houses, according to Census 2021 figures. Older homes can lose heat faster, so a room-by-room heat loss calculation, and sometimes insulation or larger radiators, comes before sizing a heat pump. In a terrace, the outdoor unit position and the MCS noise check need particular care. For a London home, the outdoor unit position and the MCS noise check need careful planning.

Eastbury Manor House, roughly 1.9 miles east, is a reminder to check your home’s listing status: permitted development does not cover listed buildings. Period properties close to St Bartholomew's Church can suit a heat pump, though insulation and any heritage protection are checked first.

East Ham is about 5 miles south-east of Walthamstow, in Greater London. Across the E6 area, our engineers can take on air source heat pumps. Across Greater London, we cover 764 places, and East Ham is one of them. London, roughly 7 miles off, has its own page on this site.

Not far from East Ham, a recent job of ours was on Greenwich High Road, Greenwich (SE10), about 4 miles south-west: installing a Mitsubishi Electric wall-mounted unit in the retail area and a second unit in the stockroom and office.

Being close to the A13 and A117, East Ham is easy for our engineers to reach. Work in E6, IG11, E13 and E12 follows the same survey, fixed-price quote and written records as everywhere else we cover. Other places close to East Ham include Wallend (1 mile north-east), Upton Park (1 mile west), Plashet (1 mile north), Beckton (1 mile south-east) and Greengate (1 mile west). Larger places within reach include London (7 miles west), City of Westminster (9 miles west), Marylebone (9 miles west) and Kensington (11 miles west).

How it works

There’s very little for you to do on the day. Just let us in and point us to the units, or to where they’ll be fitted, and we take it from there. At the end, we tidy up and run through the work with you. Pictures of the space and the outside wall help us plan the work in East Ham.

  1. First we talk through the property and the current system.
  2. Every room’s heat loss is worked out on site.
  3. The design covers the heat pump, emitters, hot water and outdoor unit.
  4. A fixed-price quote explains the cost, the grant position and the VAT.
  5. Installation, commissioning and MCS registration complete the job.

Before we arrive

  • Clear access to the fuse board
  • Clear the space around the indoor unit, or where it will go
  • Mention any roof access, ladders or high-level work

Advice

Common questions in East Ham

Is the heat pump grant available in East Ham?

East Ham is in England, where the Boiler Upgrade Scheme runs. It gives £7,500 towards an air-to-water or ground source heat pump, or £2,500 towards an air-to-air heat pump that replaces the fossil-fuel heating and meets the whole home’s heating need. The installer applies, and we’re MCS certified.

Is a heat pump in East Ham permitted development?

There’s no single answer: the building and the outdoor unit position decide it. Central East Ham is a short walk from the East Ham Town Centre Conservation Area. Heat pumps on houses are often permitted development, but listed buildings need consent and conservation areas restrict outdoor units facing a road. Where it’s needed, we check with the local planning authority (for East Ham, usually Newham council).

Do you have a 24/7 line?

Yes. There’s a 24/7 emergency line for breakdowns that can’t wait. Ring 07833 053749 any time and explain the problem.

Do you work in East Ham?

Yes. We work across Greater London, Surrey, Kent, East and West Sussex, Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Hertfordshire and Essex, East Ham included.

Why does F-Gas certification matter?

The law says any company working on equipment containing F gas has to be certified, and each engineer needs the right qualifications too. It means the refrigerant in your system is handled legally.

Which accreditations do you hold?

F-Gas company certification, NICEIC approval for electrical work and MCS certification for heat pumps, and we’re Checkatrade members. Our engineers also hold the individual F-gas qualifications needed to work on refrigerant.

Do you work on commercial properties?

Yes. From a single let flat to offices, shops and public buildings, we work the same way: survey or diagnosis, a fixed price and proper paperwork.

Why act early in East Ham

The 0% VAT rate on heat pumps in homes runs until 31 March 2027, then 5% applies. It’s a date to bear in mind when planning alongside your own plans for the property. In London, hot spells can bring a rush of calls, so planning the work in East Ham before summer avoids the wait.

One room or a whole building, we price it on the same basis: the work involved, the access and the equipment. You will have a fixed price before any work starts, and the quote sets out the VAT.
