Air conditioning in RG30: how it works

Air conditioning isn’t only for summer: most modern splits heat too. The Energy Saving Trust makes the same point: an air-to-air heat pump is what many people simply call air conditioning, so a well-chosen unit can be useful in winter as well as summer. We’re often asked to deal with not knowing which system, size or brand to choose and rooms heated by plug-in heaters, on wall-mounted split systems, VRF systems and air-to-air heat pumps.

Each visit runs to the same pattern: agree the plan on site, protect the area, carry out the job, check the system and explain it all to you. On site, the work takes about a day for a single-room system, longer for multi-room and ducted systems.

  1. We start by looking at the rooms, the walls and where the outdoor unit can go.
  2. We size the system for each room, then send a fixed-price quote with the units and where they go.
  3. The units go up and the pipework, cable and condensate drain are run neatly between them.
  4. Once the electrics are connected, the pipework is tested for leaks and put under vacuum before any refrigerant flows.
  5. Finally, it’s commissioned, tested in each mode and handed over with the F-Gas records.

A single unit or a whole estate, the quote is built the same way: what needs doing, how we get to it and what it needs. You will have a fixed price before work begins, and the quote sets out the VAT.

Getting a price

Some jobs can be priced from photos, while others need a survey. Multi-room systems, commercial buildings and anything with a long or hidden pipe route are normally surveyed first. Either way, the quote is fixed before anything goes ahead.

What’s near Norcot

Locally, jobs take us to houses, flats and workplaces close to Battle School, Meadow Park Academy and Tilehurst Methodist Church. You will also find Prospect School (1 mile south), Round Copse (less than half a mile north-east) and The Butchers Arms (0.6 miles north-west). For rail, the closest station is Tilehurst station, about 0.8 miles north. Nearby you’ll also find Battle Hospital (1.3 miles east) and Royal Berkshire Regiment Museum (1 mile east). Green spaces nearby include South Lake and Moor Copse Nature Reserve.

Air conditioning across RG30

Planning rules are the same across England, RG30 included: an air-to-air system that heats as well as cools can be permitted development on a house, but cooling-only units, listed buildings and outdoor units facing a road in conservation areas need more care.

Enquiries from RG30 get a reply on the working day they arrive. For a breakdown, use the 24/7 line.

Norcot: Living close to Tilehurst Methodist Church? Some older properties in parts like that are protected, and the survey finds out whether yours is. Plenty of people near Tilehurst station split the week between the train and a spare room, and that spare room is often the first to get a unit.

Managing agents and facilities teams in RG30

From a single flat to a whole estate, the approach is the same: a look at the job first, a fixed-price quote, work booked with the occupier and written records afterwards.

Managing agents often deal with us directly. Send the address, what’s needed and how access works, and we will send a fixed-price quote.

What air conditioning cannot fix

Before booking, it helps to know what’s not included:

  • Building damp that has a structural cause
  • Stuffy rooms that need fresh air rather than cooling
  • A room that cannot take an outdoor unit or pipe route without the landlord’s, management company’s or council’s consent (that consent comes first)

Why it fails

Commercial spaces gain heat from people, equipment, lighting and glazing. Comfortable staff and customers are the usual reason businesses get in touch, along with keeping equipment rooms at a steady temperature.

Common reasons people call us are:

  • An old system that needs replacing
  • Rooms under the roof that stay hot into the night
  • Old electric heaters you’d like to replace with something more efficient
  • A home office that warms up with screens and equipment

Looking after it afterwards

Systems last better with the right care. We suggest:

  • Choose a comfortable set temperature rather than the lowest
  • Keep the indoor unit’s filters clean
  • Leave space around the outdoor unit
  • Tell us if the unit starts to leak, rattle or show a code

The handover includes the records you need: F-Gas records, commissioning details and the manufacturer’s warranty terms. File them together, because the manufacturer or a future engineer may ask to see them.

Do not ignore small changes. A drip, a noise or a flashing light is often an early sign of a fault and catching it early keeps the repair small.

RG30: your questions answered

What warranty do I get?

It’s the manufacturer’s, and the terms are theirs. Some brands make regular servicing a condition, so keep your service records.

Which manufacturers do you install and repair?

The main ones, including Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin, Fujitsu, Panasonic, Toshiba, LG, Samsung, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Hitachi. For new systems, we recommend a brand and model to suit the job and explain why.

Whose job is it to check the system for leaks?

Whoever operates the equipment, together with the technicians who service it. Systems below 5 tCO2e fall outside the set leak check intervals, while larger ones need checks at least every 12 months, or every 6 months from 50 tCO2e. We can tell you which band your system falls into.

Do I need planning permission?

Not necessarily. On a house, air-to-water heat pumps and, since 2025, air-to-air systems that heat as well as cool can be permitted development if they meet the conditions. Permission is more likely to come up for cooling-only units, listed buildings, flats and road-facing positions in conservation areas, and we tell you at the survey. This is general information, not legal advice.

What does it cost to install air conditioning?

For one room, a split system is typically £1,200–£2,200 + VAT. A two-room multi-split is typically £2,800–£4,500 + VAT, and three to five rooms £4,500–£8,500 + VAT, including supply, installation, commissioning and F-Gas documentation. You get a fixed price before any work starts.

Which type of system should I choose?

Number of rooms, space outside and how much of the unit you want to see all decide it. Ducted units need a void or loft, and cassettes need a suspended ceiling and the survey confirms what’s possible.

Do you survey before quoting?

Yes. We always look before we price, either on a site survey or from photos and details for simple jobs. Then you get a fixed-price quote.
