Air conditioning in RG31: how it works

Most air conditioning needs its own electrical supply from the consumer unit. Under Part P, a new circuit is notifiable unless a registered competent person does it, and our NICEIC approval means we install and certify it ourselves. The work covers wall-mounted split systems, ceiling cassettes and VRF systems, and common reasons people get in touch are old electric heaters you’d like to replace with something more efficient and bedrooms and offices that overheat in summer.

Where something has to be switched off during the work, we agree it with you first so it doesn’t catch you out. In a business, work can often be done one area at a time. The work takes anything from a day for one room to several days for a multi-room or ducted system.

  1. We survey the rooms and the outside of the property, or work from pictures and details for simple jobs.
  2. The quote is fixed and shows the equipment, where each unit goes and what’s included.
  3. On the day, we fit the indoor and outdoor units and run the pipework, cable and condensate drain.
  4. Once the electrics are connected, the pipework is tested for leaks and put under vacuum before any refrigerant flows.
  5. Finally, it’s commissioned, tested in each mode and handed over with the F-Gas records.

Pricing in RG31

Air conditioning across RG31

Our air conditioning work across RG31 takes in places such as Reading, Norcot and Tilehurst and the smaller places around them. Every place on our RG31 list (13 in all) is covered.

Tilehurst: Plenty of people near Tilehurst station split the week between the train and a spare room, and that spare room is often the first to get a unit. About 1.6 miles north stands Mapledurham House. Listed homes in any area need consent first, so tell us if yours is one.

Why act early?

The best time to plan air conditioning is before the hot weather, not during it. A rushed choice is often the wrong size or in the wrong place, and that’s hard to put right later. Booking the survey early gives you time to weigh up the options.

What your quote should include

  • Whether you get F-Gas records where refrigerant is involved
  • Whether they hold F-Gas company certification, not just individual qualifications
  • What the manufacturer’s warranty covers and for how long
  • Who does the electrical work, and whether they can certify it

Rented and managed buildings

Records are where property maintenance often slips. Each visit produces a dated record, plus the F-Gas records where refrigerant is involved, ready for a tenant, a buyer or an inspection.

Portfolio owners often want one contractor and one number. Our area covers Greater London and the South East, so work at different addresses can be planned together and kept on a regular cycle.

What air conditioning cannot fix

We’d rather tell you now than sell you work that will not help, so these are the things it will not cover:

  • A room that can’t take an outdoor unit or pipe route without the landlord’s, management company’s or council’s consent (that consent comes first)
  • A ventilation problem rather than a temperature problem
  • Building damp that has a structural cause

Common problems we fix in RG31

Bedrooms that are too warm at night are a frequent reason for a call. Once a bedroom has soaked up heat during the day, opening a window may not bring the temperature down far enough, particularly when there’s no breeze.

Any of these is worth a proper look:

  • A room that is unbearable on warm days
  • Fans and portables that don’t keep up
  • A loft room or top floor that bakes in summer
  • Not knowing which system, size or brand to choose

FAQs for RG31

Can I use air conditioning to heat a room?

Yes, most modern split systems run as heat pumps, so they can heat a room in winter. The Energy Saving Trust notes that air-to-air heat pumps are sometimes referred to as air conditioning. Some cooling-only models exist, so we confirm it for the model on your quote.

How soon will you get back to me?

On the same working day you contact us. After that, we agree a survey, diagnosis or installation date that suits you, with a fixed price before work starts.

Does air conditioning need its own electrical supply?

Most systems need their own supply from the consumer unit. Under Part P, a new circuit has to be notified unless a registered competent person does it, and we’re NICEIC approved, so we can install and certify it.

Whose job is it to check the system for leaks?

The operator of the equipment, working with qualified engineers. Larger systems need regular checks: at least every 12 months from 5 tCO2e and every 6 months from 50 tCO2e. We can tell you which band your system falls into.

How much is air conditioning for one room?

For one room, a split system is typically £1,200–£2,200 + VAT. A two-room multi-split is typically £2,800–£4,500 + VAT, and three to five rooms £4,500–£8,500 + VAT, including supply, installation, commissioning and F-Gas documentation. You get a fixed price before any work starts.

How long does it take to fit air conditioning?

Most single-room systems take a day. Multi-room and ducted systems take longer, depending on the pipe routes and access and the quote says how long to expect.

Do you work on systems someone else installed?

Yes. We work on systems fitted by other installers as well as our own from all the leading brands. Tell us the make and model and send any paperwork you have.
