Air conditioning across RG1: what to expect

Thinking about air conditioning but not sure where to start? Just give us a ring on 07833 053749 or email us with pictures of the rooms and the outside of the property, and we will reply the same working day to arrange a survey or a quote. Typical jobs include a home office that warms up with screens and equipment and a system on old refrigerant that’s due for replacement, across ducted systems, ceiling cassettes and multi-split systems.

If the system has to be off for part of the visit, we tell you before we start so it doesn’t catch you out. For businesses, we can typically work room by room or zone by zone. The work takes a day for most single-room installations, with multi-split, ducted and cassette systems taking longer.

  1. Diagnosis comes first, with a survey of the rooms, outside space and fuse board.
  2. Then the prescription: the right system and size for each room, on a fixed-price quote.
  3. The treatment: units fitted, pipework and drain routed, and the electrics installed.
  4. Checks: a pressure test for leaks, then a vacuum to clear moisture.
  5. Finally, the clean bill of health: commissioning, the controls explained and your paperwork handed over.

What you’ll pay

What you pay depends on the type of system and how many units are involved, the access and what the work involves. We give you a fixed price before work begins, so there are no surprises.

Air conditioning across RG1: local notes

Planning rules are the same across England, RG1 included: an air-to-air system that heats as well as cools can be permitted development on a house, but cooling-only units, listed buildings and outdoor units facing a road in conservation areas need more care.

Across London and the South East, we reply to enquiries the same working day, with a 24/7 emergency line for breakdowns.

Newtown: Around St John and St Stephen, a quick check of the listing and conservation maps is part of planning any install. About 4.3 miles north-west stands Mapledurham House. Listed homes in any area need consent first, so tell us if yours is one.

Fixed-price quotes for air conditioning in RG1

The price is fixed before any work begins. It takes into account:

  • One-off work versus a regular service cycle
  • The condition of any existing system
  • How easy the units are to reach
  • The size of the job

Whatever the property, the quote works the same way: the equipment, the access, the work involved and the time it takes. Ask for a fixed-price quote and we’ll explain each part.

What to send for a quote

What to send for a quote:

  • The rating plate or label on any existing unit
  • Your installation or service records
  • Where the outdoor unit is, or where you’d like it
  • Where the property is and what kind of building it is

The quickest way to a quote is to send photos: the inside and outside of the property where the work is, plus the rating plate of any unit already there. Add the address and what you’d like done, and simple jobs can often be priced without a visit.

Let and managed properties

Where a tenant occupies the property but the landlord owns the system, the lease or tenancy agreement normally sets out who maintains what. We can quote either party and send the records to whoever needs them.

Bigger systems bring extra duties: systems with an effective rated output over 12 kW need a TM44 inspection by an accredited energy assessor at least every 5 years. We arrange the inspection, get the system ready and put right anything it picks up.

Why deal with it now?

New systems now use lower-impact refrigerants. From 2025, single splits under 3 kg cannot use refrigerants with a GWP over 750, which is why R32, with a GWP of 675, is now common. Older R410A systems have a GWP of 2088.

What your quote should include

  • Whether the quote is a fixed price
  • Which brand and model they’re proposing, and why
  • Whether the manufacturer’s warranty depends on regular servicing
  • Whether they looked at the job before pricing it

Safe owner checks

Refrigerant is off limits for anyone without the right qualifications. Under the F-gas rules, engineers need their own qualifications and the company must be certified, and escaping refrigerant can cause cold burns. A suspected leak is our job, not yours.

Keep a note of anything odd: an error code, a new noise, a drip, a smell or a change in how well the system heats or cools. It helps us diagnose quickly, and a photo of the display helps even more.

Your questions about air conditioning in RG1

Does air conditioning work as heating?

In most cases, yes. Running as a heat pump, it moves heat in from outside rather than making it from electricity alone. To replace your main heating, there are extra conditions, including for the £2,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant for air-to-air heat pumps.

Can you fit air conditioning in a leasehold flat?

In many cases, but permissions come first. You’ll typically need the landlord’s or management company’s consent for the outdoor unit and the pipe route and the lease will say. Permitted development rules for flats are also tighter than for houses, so we point out anything that may need permission on the survey. This is general information, not legal advice.

Will skipping a service affect the warranty?

Check the manufacturer’s terms. Some warranty terms require the system to be serviced regularly by a qualified engineer, so check the terms or ask us. Keep every service record either way.

Can the outdoor unit go on a roof or at ground level?

The position is agreed on the survey, not on the day. It must have clear airflow and space for servicing, and a position facing a road can bring extra planning considerations. We explain the options and any permissions to check.

How long does air conditioning installation take?

Allow about a day for a single-room system, longer for multi-room and ducted systems. The survey tells us how long your installation will need, so you can plan around it.

Do you work on all makes?

The main ones, including Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin, Fujitsu, Panasonic, Toshiba, LG, Samsung, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Hitachi. For new systems, we recommend a brand and model to suit the job and explain why.

How do you size the system?

Floor area is only part of it. Glazing, orientation, the roof and what goes on in the room all affect it, and we take them all into account on the survey.
