Homes in Newtown and heat pumps

Draw a one-mile circle round the middle of Newtown and it takes in 7 conservation areas. Listed buildings are part of the picture here: about 53 within half a mile of the centre, such as Wycliffe Baptist Church (grade II). That affects heat pumps: listed buildings need consent, and conservation areas limit where the outdoor unit can go under permitted development. Where necessary, we check with Reading council, usually the planning authority here. VOA council tax data put about 62% of homes across Newtown and its surrounding area before 1919, and the 2021 Census found about 43% of households in terraced houses. Period properties can still suit a heat pump, but the design has to start from accurate heat loss figures. Shared walls keep a terrace’s heat loss down, while gardens next door make the noise check on the outdoor unit important.

Period properties close to St John and St Stephen can suit a heat pump, though insulation and any heritage protection are checked first. Mapledurham House lies about 4.3 miles north-west. Owners of listed homes need consent before a heat pump is fitted, so it’s one of our first questions.

Newtown is about 1 mile east of Reading, in Wokingham. From the centre of Newtown to the outskirts, we cover air source heat pumps, from a single room to a whole building. Newtown is one of 35 towns, villages and districts in Wokingham where we work. Guildford, roughly 22 miles off, has its own page on this site.

Not far from Newtown, a recent job of ours was on Princess Way, Camberley (GU15), about 13 miles south-east: installing a Samsung VRF system serving twelve rooms across two floors, including open-plan working areas, individual offices, a server room and a boardroom.

Neighbouring places we cover include Lower Caversham (1 mile north-west), Reading (1 mile west), Earley (2 miles south-east), Caversham (2 miles north-west) and Play Hatch (2 miles north). Within a short drive, we also cover Wokingham (5 miles south-east), Crowthorne (9 miles south-east), Winnersh (3 miles south-east) and Woosehill (5 miles south-east).

Air source heat pumps in Newtown, done properly

We begin with a room-by-room heat loss survey. That tells us how much heat the home needs, room by room so the system is sized to match. Sizing by rule of thumb is not good enough. If the problem is ageing boilers that will need replacing and working out whether radiators need upsizing, we can help.

For a house near Newtown, space outside is rarely the problem, so heat loss, radiators and the electrics are what we check.

Nothing is signed off by word of mouth: commissioning details for an installation, a fault and repair note for a repair, or a record of the service. Keep it with the system’s paperwork so it’s to hand next time.

How it works

Our engineers bring the tools, gauges and access equipment the job needs. All we ask is clear access to the units, or to where they’ll go, and to the consumer unit. On site, the work takes a few days for most air-to-water installations, with air-to-air systems often quicker. Tell us about any gates or steps at your property near Newtown when you book.

  1. First we talk through the property and the current system.
  2. Every room’s heat loss is worked out on site.
  3. We design the system, check the radiators and cylinder and look at the outdoor unit position.
  4. A fixed-price quote explains the cost, the grant position and the VAT.
  5. Then it’s fitted, commissioned and registered with MCS.

How to prepare

  • Dig out any previous service or F-Gas records
  • Keep pets and children away from the work area
  • Mention any managing agent or landlord rules we need to follow

How to get a quote

Our prices page gives typical ranges, but your quote is based on your job, because no two buildings, rooms or systems are the same. After a look at the job, by pictures or a survey, the price is fixed. To start, call 07833 053749 or drop us a line.

How the job changes from property to property

Heat loss surveys

We look at walls, windows, floors, roofs and ventilation, and the size of each room.

Outdoor unit position and planning

Permitted development conditions in England include an outdoor unit of no more than 1.5 m³ and must meet MCS 020(a) and not be used solely for cooling. Listed building curtilages are excluded.

Looking after your system

After the visit, a few habits help:

  • Keep to regular servicing
  • Find out the grant position at the survey
  • Keep the MCS certificate with the manufacturer’s paperwork

Should you have questions after the install, phone us on 07833 053749 or drop us a line and we’ll look into it. A yearly service is a good habit.

A well-insulated home helps a heat pump, as lower heat loss means the system has less to do.

Common questions in Newtown

Will you come out to Newtown?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. A few pictures and the postcode are enough to get things started.

Does the Boiler Upgrade Scheme cover homes in Newtown?

Newtown is covered, as the scheme runs across England and Wales. The grant is £7,500 for an air source (air-to-water) heat pump and £2,500 for an air-to-air system that replaces the existing fossil-fuel heating. As an MCS certified installer, we apply for it on your behalf.

Are you F-Gas certified?

AirCon Doctor is an F-Gas certified company, with NICEIC approval for electrical work and MCS certification for heat pumps. We’re members of Checkatrade too.

Will my radiators work with a heat pump?

The heat loss survey answers that, room by room. Where a radiator is already large enough, it stays and any changes are in the quote.

Do you have a 24/7 line?

Yes. There’s a 24/7 emergency line for problems that cannot wait for a planned visit. Call 07833 053749 and tell us what’s happened.

Do you look at the job first?

Yes. For simple jobs, photos and a few details can be enough, while larger systems and faults that need testing are seen on site.

Why does F-Gas certification matter?

F-Gas certification shows a company is approved to work on equipment containing fluorinated gases, such as the refrigerant in air conditioning and heat pumps. That is not optional: it’s required by law, and AirCon Doctor is certified.

Owner checks or an engineer?

Owner care supports servicing; it does not replace it. Simple care keeps the air moving through the system, but the inside of the units, the refrigerant and the electrics still need a qualified engineer.

Refrigerant is off limits for anyone without the right qualifications. Under the F-gas rules, engineers need their own qualifications and the company must be certified, and escaping refrigerant can cause cold burns. If you suspect a leak, switch the system off and call us.

What a customer said

“Office air con broke down in the July heatwave. Called at 8am, engineer was here by noon and fixed within 2 hours. Brilliant emergency response. They now hold the service contract for the whole building.”
