Air conditioning in Reading: how it works

We approach an installation much as a doctor approaches a patient: survey first, install second, commission and hand over last. The sign-off includes testing every mode, showing you the controls and handing over the F-Gas records. The work covers wall-mounted split systems, air-to-air heat pumps and ceiling cassettes, and people most often call us about a system on old refrigerant that’s due for replacement and a loft conversion that’s too warm to use.

Think of the visit in three stages: diagnose, treat and sign off. First we check the system or the space against the plan, then the work itself, and finally everything is tested, recorded and explained. Most of the time goes on the middle part, which takes a day or more, depending on the number of rooms, the pipe routes and the access.

  1. Diagnosis comes first, with a survey of the rooms, outside space and fuse board.
  2. Next, a recommendation for each room and a fixed price.
  3. Then the work: units up, pipes and drain run, and a new circuit where needed.
  4. Testing: the circuit is pressure tested and evacuated before the refrigerant is released.
  5. The sign-off: commissioning, a walk through the controls, and the F-Gas records and warranty details.

Caversham: Living close to Grace Church? Some older properties in parts like that are protected, and the survey finds out whether yours is. With historic houses such as Mapledurham House about 3 miles west, it’s a reminder that older homes nearby may be listed, which changes the planning rules.

Before you call an engineer

There are a few things you can safely do yourself: keep the outdoor unit clear of leaves, plants and clutter, check the settings and the remote, and follow the cleaning the manual describes. Anything inside the units, the electrics and the refrigerant is engineer’s work.

Owner care supports servicing; it does not replace it. Simple care keeps the air moving through the system, but the refrigerant circuit, the electrics and the parts you can’t see still need an engineer at the interval the manufacturer recommends.

What happens if it’s left?

Size matters more than brand. An undersized unit runs hard and still can’t keep the room cool; an oversized one cycles on and off and wastes energy. Getting the sizing right at the survey stage avoids both problems.

Questions to ask before you book

  • The make and model of any parts or equipment being quoted
  • Whether anyone has checked the property or the system first
  • What the manufacturer’s warranty covers and for how long
  • What records you get at the end

When it’s something else

Air conditioning cannot fix everything, and we will tell you before we start. It will not put right:

  • A building fabric problem such as single glazing or no loft insulation
  • An installation that needs consent nobody has given yet
  • Damp or condensation caused by leaks or poor ventilation in the building (that needs the cause fixing)

Aftercare tips

Looking after the system is mostly common sense. A few tips:

  • Let filters dry fully before you put them back
  • Choose a comfortable set temperature rather than the lowest
  • Keep the room closed while it runs
  • File the paperwork with the manual

The filters are the one part you will look after yourself, so we show you how. In busy periods, clean them every few weeks, following the manual, and keep the outdoor unit clear of leaves and clutter.

Have the system serviced once a year. The engineer cleans the coils and drain, checks the electrics and the refrigerant circuit and catches small problems early, and it keeps any warranty servicing conditions in order.

Reading: your questions answered

How much does air conditioning installation cost?

Single-room systems start from £1,200 + VAT and are typically up to £2,200 + VAT. That covers supply, installation, commissioning and the F-Gas paperwork and is fixed after a survey or from pictures.

Does air conditioning need its own electrical supply?

Normally, yes. We check your consumer unit on the survey and include any electrical work on the quote, and our NICEIC approval covers the installation and certificate.

Do you offer maintenance contracts?

Yes. Send details of the systems and how they’re used, and we’ll suggest a schedule with a fixed price. Leak checks required by the F-gas rules can be built in for larger systems.

How do you keep the place clean during the work?

We put dust sheets over floors and furniture near the work first, and the area is kept tidy throughout. At the end, we clear up and show you what we’ve done.

How long does air conditioning installation take?

A single-room system is typically fitted in a day. Multi-split, ducted and cassette systems take longer, and we tell you how long on the quote.

Do you survey before quoting?

Yes. Photos often do the job for simple work, while larger systems and faults that need testing are seen on site.

How soon will you get back to me?

We reply to enquiries the same working day. If it’s an emergency, ring the 24/7 line instead.
