Air source heat pumps in Reading: how it works
An air-to-water heat pump heats water to a lower temperature than a typical boiler, so radiators may need to be larger to give out the same heat. We check each radiator against the room’s heat loss and anything that needs changing is in the quote. Common call-outs are for planning and permitted development questions and no space for a hot water cylinder, across homes heated by oil, LPG or gas, underfloor heating and hot water cylinders.
The visit goes in the diary at a time that works for you, and we let you know if plans need to move. On arrival, the engineer compares the job with the survey, your pictures or the details you gave us. Anything unexpected is raised with you before we go further. From there, the work takes a few days on site, depending on the cylinder, the radiators and the pipework involved.
- We talk through your home, your current heating and what you want from a heat pump.
- A heat loss survey works out how much heat each room needs, and we look at the radiators, the cylinder space and where the outdoor unit could go.
- A fixed-price quote follows, setting out the system, any grant that applies and the VAT.
- The outdoor unit, the indoor equipment and the controls are installed and connected.
- Once it’s running correctly, the MCS certificate is issued and we show you the settings.

Heat pumps across Reading
Until March 2027, off-gas homes in Reading heated by oil or LPG can get an extra £1,500 towards an air source or ground source heat pump.
We reply to enquiries from Reading the same working day, with a 24/7 emergency line for breakdowns.
Caversham: Older homes near Grace Church may need extra checks for planning and heat loss before a heat pump is designed. If your home is listed, like Mapledurham House about 3 miles west, listed building consent comes before any heat pump work.
Landlords, agents and facilities managers
We work for landlords, letting agents and managing agents as well as homeowners and businesses. Tell us who the contact on site is and who should receive the paperwork, and we will keep everyone informed.
Whether it’s one property or many, you get the same standard: a look at the job first, a fixed-price quote, work booked with the occupier and written records afterwards.
What happens if it’s left?
Choosing between air-to-water and air-to-air is easier with the facts. Air-to-water works with radiators and a cylinder, with a £7,500 grant for eligible homes, while air-to-air heats and cools rooms and has a £2,500 grant only in limited cases, and we explain which fits your home.
Questions to ask before you book
- What’s in the price and what isn’t
- What happens if the job turns out to be different on the day
- The make and model of any parts or equipment being quoted
- What records you get at the end
When it’s something else
Some problems need a different service or another trade:
- Planning decisions, which rest with the council
- Tax advice on your own circumstances
- A grant for a home that doesn’t meet the scheme rules
Different systems, different jobs
Radiators and underfloor heating
At lower water temperatures, radiators give out less heat so we check them against each room’s heat loss.
VAT on heat pumps
Installing an air source heat pump in a home is zero-rated until 31 March 2027, then 5%, under HMRC Notice 708/6. It doesn’t apply to businesses.
Common questions in Reading
Can I fit air conditioning or a heat pump myself?
Anything that involves the refrigerant needs an F-Gas qualified engineer from a certified company. That is the law, not just our preference, and it also matters for the manufacturer’s warranty. We are happy to quote for the full job, supply to commissioning.
What VAT do I pay on a heat pump?
For homes, currently none: until 31 March 2027 the rate is 0% in residential accommodation, then 5%. The relief is not available to businesses, and for air-to-air systems we confirm the VAT on your quote. This is general information, not tax advice.
Can landlords and managing agents book you?
Yes. We work for homeowners, landlords, letting and managing agents, and businesses of every size across London and the South East. Let us know who the records should go to.
Are my radiators big enough for a heat pump?
That depends on the room’s heat loss and the radiator’s size. The survey compares each radiator with the room’s needs, so the quote covers any changes.
How does the warranty work?
It’s the manufacturer’s warranty, which varies by brand. For example, Daikin’s standard warranty on split air conditioning is 2 years and we explain the terms for your brand on the quote.
How long will it take to install a heat pump?
As a guide, it takes a few days on site, depending on the cylinder, the radiators and the pipework involved. We plan the work so you’re without heating for as little time as possible, and we explain it in advance.
Will you make a mess?
Floors and furniture near the work are covered with dust sheets before we start, and the area is kept tidy throughout. Before we leave, we clear up and run through the work with you.
