Most single-room installs in Play Hatch are done in a day, with multi-room systems taking longer depending on pipe routes.

Homes around Play Hatch normally have room outside for an outdoor unit. The questions are more often the age of the walls, the electrics and how far the pipes need to run.

If a fault appears while the equipment is under the manufacturer’s warranty, tell us the make, model and installation date. We will explain how the manufacturer’s terms are likely to apply before anything chargeable is done.

Signs you need air conditioning in Play Hatch

Rooms overheat mostly because of heat they gain during the day. Sun through large windows, roof lights and glazed doors is the biggest source in many rooms, and once the room has warmed up, it holds on to it into the evening.

Common reasons people call us are:

  • A home office that warms up with screens and equipment
  • Expensive direct electric heating
  • A system on old refrigerant that is due for replacement

Mapledurham House (roughly 4.4 miles west) shows the area has its share of heritage. A listed home needs consent before an outdoor unit or pipework goes on.

What your quote should include

  • Whether extra work needs your approval first
  • Exactly what the price includes, from supply and fitting to commissioning
  • Whether a new circuit is included and who certifies it

Our hiring checklist

Leave it or put it right?

Size matters more than brand. Too small, and it runs flat out without catching up; too big, and it switches on and off and wastes energy. Sizing each room properly on the survey avoids both. A system that is left with a fault, or without a service, normally costs more to run.

Typical ranges are on our prices page, but your price depends on the job in front of us. Call for a fixed-price quote, and we will talk you through it.

How it works

Each visit runs to the same pattern: agree the plan on site, put the dust sheets down, carry out the job, check the system and talk you through it. The visit itself takes anything from a day for one room to several days for a multi-room or ducted system. Work in Play Hatch is booked in advance at a time that suits you.

  1. We start by looking at the rooms, the walls and where the outdoor unit can go.
  2. The quote is fixed and shows the equipment, where each unit goes and what’s included.
  3. On the day, we fit the indoor and outdoor units and run the pipework, cable and condensate drain.
  4. Once the electrics are connected, the pipework is tested for leaks and put under vacuum before any refrigerant flows.
  5. Finally, it’s commissioned, tested in each mode and handed over with the F-Gas records.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Name a contact who can meet us at the agreed time
  • Tell us about access, such as roof hatches, high walls or locked plant areas
  • Make sure we can reach the consumer unit or fuse board

Common questions in Play Hatch

Is air conditioning in Play Hatch permitted development?

It depends on the property. Historic England lists about 6 buildings and structures within half a mile of the centre of Play Hatch. Since 2025, an air-to-air heat pump on a house can count as permitted development if it meets the conditions and isn’t used only for cooling. Listed buildings still need consent, and in a conservation area a road-facing wall or roof isn’t allowed under those rules. If there’s any doubt, we ask the planning department at Reading council, usually the authority for Play Hatch.

Is Play Hatch in your area for air conditioning?

Yes, Play Hatch is within the area we cover. Just give us a ring on 07833 053749 or fill in the contact form with a few details.

Do you provide F-Gas records?

Yes. Each visit is written up, and any work on the refrigerant circuit goes in the F-Gas records. Keep them with the manual and the warranty documents.

How do you size the system?

It depends on the room, not only its floor area. Windows, the direction the room faces, the roof above and the people and equipment in it all count, and we take them all into account on the survey.

Where does the outdoor unit go?

The position is agreed on the survey, not on the day. It must have clear airflow and space for servicing, and walls or roofs facing a road can raise planning questions. We will tell you what to check before we fit it.

Is air conditioning possible in a flat?

It depends on the building and the lease. An outdoor unit can sometimes go on a balcony, roof or rear wall, with consent, and we check the options on the survey. This is general information, not legal advice.

Can we book visits on a schedule?

Yes. We offer maintenance contracts, set at the interval the system and the manufacturer’s terms need. Each visit is written up and F-Gas records kept where they apply.

How the job changes from property to property

Ceiling cassettes

Cassettes are good at even airflow across a large floor area, and the slim grille sits neatly in the ceiling.

Multi-split systems

A two-room multi-split is typically £2,800–£4,500 + VAT, and three to five rooms £4,500–£8,500 + VAT. The route from the outdoor unit to each room is the main variable.

Air conditioning around Play Hatch

About 61% of homes across Play Hatch and its surrounding area date from 1945 to 1972, according to the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures, and about 79% of households live in detached or semi-detached houses, according to the 2021 Census. We check the wall construction on homes of that age, as it decides how the pipework goes through. Houses typically have a side or rear wall with room for the outdoor unit, and a multi-split can serve several rooms from one outdoor unit.

Homes near St Andrew's Church are a good example of where we look up the heritage status of the building before fixing anything to it.
