Air conditioning across E8: what to expect

A new system normally needs a dedicated circuit from the fuse board. Under Part P, a new circuit is notifiable unless a registered competent person does it, and our NICEIC approval means we install and certify it ourselves. We’re often asked to deal with commercial rooms that are too warm for staff and fans and portables that don’t keep up, across VRF systems, air-to-air heat pumps and ceiling cassettes.

Each visit runs to the same pattern: check the plan with you, put the dust sheets down, do the work, check the system and talk you through it. The visit itself takes a day for most single-room installations, with multi-split, ducted and cassette systems taking longer.

  1. You send photos, or we visit and survey the rooms and outside.
  2. The system is sized, positions are agreed and the price is fixed.
  3. We protect the area, then fit both halves of the system.
  4. We run and connect the pipes, cable and drain, then pressure test and evacuate the circuit.
  5. It’s switched on, checked and handed over with its records.

What you will pay

Several rooms, units or sites on one quote often makes better use of the time. Mention every unit or room you need covered, and you’ll get one fixed price.

Getting a price

Getting a quote is straightforward. Send a few details and photos, and we reply the same working day. Where a survey is needed, we arrange a time that suits you.

Around Hackney Central

Typical jobs here are in properties near Church of St Michael and All Angels, Gayhurst Community School and Bishopsgate Institute Special Collections and Archives. You’ll also find The Urswick School (under half a mile east), Baxter's Court pub (under half a mile north-east), Haggerston Park (0.8 miles south-west) and The Urswick School - A Church of England Secondary School (within half a mile east). There’s a railway station in Hackney Central itself: London Fields station. Nearby you will also find German Hospital (less than half a mile north-west) and Hackney Walk (0.5 miles north-east). Green spaces nearby include Old Ford Island and Tower Hill.

Air conditioning around E8

From Homerton, West Hackney and Hackney outwards, E8 has every kind of home. We survey every property before we quote, then a fixed-price quote.

London and the South East cover everything from city flats to rural cottages. We’re F-Gas certified, NICEIC approved and MCS certified for heat pumps.

Hackney Central: Plenty of people near London Fields station split the week between the train and a spare room, and that spare room is often the first to get a unit. Around Church of St Michael and All Angels, a quick check of the listing and conservation maps is part of planning any install.

After we’ve gone

Looking after the system is mostly common sense. A few tips:

  • File the paperwork with the manual
  • Never run the system with the filters out
  • Tell us if the unit starts to leak, rattle or show a code
  • Keep to the service interval the manufacturer recommends

Commissioning is the last stage: every mode is tested before we go. Once it’s running properly, we take you through the controls and settings, so you are confident using it.

Report drips, noises or error codes early. Water from the indoor unit, a new rattle or a code on the display normally means something needs attention and catching it early keeps the repair small.

Fixed-price quotes for air conditioning in E8

Jobs vary more than people expect. The main factors:

  • The electrical supply and whether a new circuit is needed
  • One-off work versus a regular service cycle
  • What we find on the survey or diagnosis
  • How far the pipework has to run, and where

The pipe route, the height of the units and how we reach them can all change the price. We take each of them into account and give you a fixed price before work begins.

Before you get in touch

You do not need the technical terms. Just send:

  • A photo of the consumer unit with the cover closed
  • The outdoor side of the property, including any roof or flat area
  • Wide photos of the room or the existing unit
  • The rating plate or label on any existing unit

Quoting starts with a diagnosis, from a site survey or, where the job is straightforward, from pictures and measurements. Then you get a fixed price before any work starts.

Common problems we fix in E8

Most overheating comes from heat gained through the day. Sun through large windows, roof lights and glazed doors is the biggest source in many rooms, and once the room has warmed up, it holds on to it into the evening.

If any of these sounds familiar, it’s worth a diagnosis:

  • Portable units that are noisy and barely cope
  • An office, shop or restaurant that’s uncomfortable for staff and customers
  • Rooms under the roof that stay hot into the night
  • A room that’s unbearable on warm days

Electrical supply

A dedicated circuit is normally needed. As NICEIC approved contractors, we install it and issue the certificate and that covers the Part P side.

Ceiling cassettes

A cassette sits flush in a suspended ceiling and spreads air in several directions and they’re a common choice for offices, shops and larger rooms.

FAQs for E8

Should I choose wall-mounted, ducted or cassette?

Number of rooms, space outside and how much of the unit you want to see all decide it. Ducted systems need a ceiling void or loft, and cassettes need a suspended ceiling and the survey confirms what’s possible.

Can I use air conditioning to heat a room?

Yes, most modern split systems run as heat pumps, so they heat as well as cool. The Energy Saving Trust notes that air-to-air heat pumps are sometimes referred to as air conditioning. Some cooling-only models exist, so we confirm it for the model on your quote.

Will I get records for the system?

Yes. It’s your proof of what was done: the date, the work, and any refrigerant added or recovered.

Are you F-Gas certified?

F-Gas company certification, NICEIC approval for electrical work and MCS certification for heat pumps, and we are Checkatrade members. Our engineers also hold the individual F-gas qualifications needed to work on refrigerant.

How long will the installation take?

Most single-room systems take a day. Multi-room and ducted systems take longer, depending on the pipe routes and access, and we tell you how long on the quote.

Do you offer maintenance contracts?

Yes. Send details of the systems and how they’re used, and we’ll suggest a schedule with a fixed price. Leak checks required by the F-gas rules can be built in for larger systems.

Who has to arrange F-Gas leak checks?

Responsibility is shared between the operator, usually whoever owns or controls the equipment, and the service technicians. How often depends on the size of the refrigerant charge in tonnes of CO2 equivalent: at least every 12 months from 5 tCO2e, and every 6 months from 50 tCO2e.
