How air conditioning works in N5

Most air conditioning needs its own electrical supply from the consumer unit. Adding a new circuit is notifiable building work under Part P unless it’s done by a registered competent person, and as NICEIC approved contractors we can install and certify it as part of the job. The work covers ducted systems, multi-split systems and wall-mounted split systems, and common reasons people get in touch are rooms that get too hot to sleep or work in and working from home in a room that gets too warm.

On the day, we arrive at the time agreed with you and run through the plan before anything else. Floors and furniture near the work are covered with dust sheets, and anything electrical is made safe before work starts. On site, it takes a day for most single-room installations, with multi-split, ducted and cassette systems taking longer.

  1. You send pictures, or we visit and survey the rooms and outside.
  2. Output, positions and price are settled before anything is booked.
  3. On the day, dust sheets go down and the indoor and outdoor units are fitted.
  4. Connections are made, checked for leaks and pulled down to a vacuum.
  5. The system is commissioned, the controls explained and the F-Gas records handed over.

How we quote

The pipe route, the height of the units and how we reach them can all change the price. We take each of them into account and give you a fixed price before we start.

What you get with us

  • MCS certified heat pump installers

  • Checkatrade member
  • F-Gas company certification

Ask for a quote

Quoting starts with a diagnosis, either on a site survey or, for simple jobs, from your pictures and details. Then you get a fixed price before any work starts.

Where we install in N5

From Highbury, Lower Holloway and Newington Green outwards, N5 has every kind of home. We survey every property before we quote.

An F-Gas certified company does the refrigerant side, while NICEIC approval covers the electrical work.

Highbury: Around Christ Church, a quick check of the listing and conservation maps is part of planning any install. If you commute from Canonbury station and work from home on other days, one wall-mounted unit in the home office is often all that is needed.

Aftercare tips

Every system needs looking after, and most of it is easy. A few tips:

  • Shut doors and windows when it’s on
  • Book an annual service
  • Choose a comfortable set temperature rather than the lowest
  • Report drips, noises or error codes straight away

You get the paperwork that matters: the commissioning details, the F-Gas records and the manufacturer’s warranty information. Keep them with the manual as they’re needed for servicing and any warranty question.

Regular filter cleaning is the simplest thing you can do. Clean filters keep the air moving and help the system work as designed, so it uses less electricity for the same comfort.

Why act early?

Refrigerant rules have changed what new systems use. From 2025, single splits under 3 kg cannot use refrigerants with a GWP over 750, which is why R32, with a GWP of 675, is now common. R410A, used in many older systems, has a GWP of 2088.

Questions to ask before booking

  • What’s in the price and what is not
  • Whether a new circuit is included and who certifies it
  • Whether anyone has checked the property or the system first
  • Whose warranty applies, and on what terms

What air conditioning cannot fix

A few issues sit outside what this work can do:

  • A ventilation problem rather than a temperature problem
  • A room that can’t take an outdoor unit or pipe route without the landlord’s, management company’s or council’s consent (that consent comes first)
  • Draughts and missing insulation

Common problems we fix in N5

Not everyone is after cooling. Direct electric heaters convert electricity into heat one for one, while an air-to-air heat pump moves heat from outside, so it gives out more heat than the electricity it uses. Most modern split systems work this way.

These are the situations we see most often:

  • An ageing air conditioning system near the end of its life
  • A room that’s unbearable on warm days
  • A loft conversion that is too warm to use
  • Fans and portables that don’t keep up

N5: your questions answered

How does the warranty work?

It’s the manufacturer’s warranty, which varies by brand. For instance, Daikin’s standard warranty on split air conditioning is 2 years, and we explain the terms for whichever brand you choose.

Which accreditations do you hold?

We hold F-Gas company certification, which the law requires for any business working on refrigerant. NICEIC approval, MCS certification for heat pumps and Checkatrade membership sit alongside it.

Can we book visits on a schedule?

Yes. Send details of the systems and how they’re used, and we’ll suggest a schedule with a fixed price. Leak checks required by the F-gas rules can be built in for larger systems.

Can air conditioning heat my home as well?

Most of the time, yes. Running as a heat pump, it moves heat in from outside rather than making it from electricity alone. To replace your main heating, there are extra conditions, including for the £2,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant for air-to-air heat pumps.

Is N5 in your area?

Yes. Our area takes in London and the counties of the South East, and that includes N5.

Will I get records for the system?

Yes. Each visit is written up, and any work on the refrigerant circuit goes in the F-Gas records. Keep them with the manual and the warranty documents.

Which type of air conditioning is best?

Number of rooms, space outside and how much of the unit you want to see all decide it. Ducted systems need a ceiling void or loft, and cassettes need a suspended ceiling and the survey confirms what’s possible.
