Flats and blocks of flats have different limits, and Article 4 directions can remove rights. Listed buildings also need separate consent and we check what applies to you.

How we handle air source heat pumps in Old Town

Hot water from an air-to-water system is stored in a cylinder. Homes with a combi boiler may not have a cylinder, so finding space for one is part of the survey. Air-to-air systems do not heat hot water, so you will need another way to do that. We are often asked to deal with no space for a hot water cylinder and deciding on the outdoor unit position, on underfloor heating, hot water cylinders and radiator systems.

Homes in Old Town are often flats and terraces, where outside space is limited, which affects which heat pump suits. An air-to-water system needs space outside and normally a hot water cylinder inside, while air-to-air units take less room.

Whatever the visit, you get a written record: commissioning details for an installation, a fault and repair note for a repair, or a record of the service. File it with the manual so it’s to hand next time.

Owner checks or an engineer?

For air conditioning, cleaning the indoor unit’s filters is the main job owners can do where the manufacturer’s manual explains how. They come out, get a gentle clean and go back only when they’re dry. For a heat pump, the main owner jobs are a clear outdoor unit and sensible control settings.

Some faults have simple causes you can check first: is the system in the right mode, is the set temperature sensible, are the remote’s batteries working and has the breaker tripped. If the breaker trips a second time, leave it off and ring us on 07833 053749.

Why deal with it now?

Replacing a boiler in a hurry when it breaks leaves little time to consider a heat pump. Surveying and designing in advance means the system is sized right and any grant is applied for before you need the heat. Hot weather is when everyone in London wants air conditioning, so it’s easier to plan the work in Old Town early.

Our prices page shows typical ranges, but each job is priced on what it involves. For a fixed-price quote, phone 07833 053749, or email if that’s easier, and we will talk you through it.

Homes in Old Town and heat pumps

VOA council tax data show about 42% of homes in and around Old Town were built in 2000 or later, and the 2021 Census found about 76% of households live in flats. Better insulated, newer homes are often a good match for a heat pump. For flats, the first questions are where an outdoor unit could go, whether a cylinder fits and what the lease allows. London homes can be short of space for an outdoor unit and cylinder, which affects the choice of heat pump.

Older homes near Croydon Minster may need extra checks for planning and heat loss before a heat pump is designed. Historic houses such as Addington Palace, about 3 miles east, are a reminder that listed homes need consent before a heat pump goes in.

The process

If the system has to be off for part of the visit, we tell you before any work starts so it does not catch you out. In a business, work can often be done one area at a time. On site, it takes a few days on site, depending on the cylinder, the radiators and the pipework involved. Photos of the room and where the outdoor unit could go let us plan most of a visit to Old Town in advance.

  1. It starts with a conversation about the home, the existing heating and your plans.
  2. We survey the home room by room for heat loss, and check the emitters, hot water and outdoor unit position.
  3. We send a fixed-price quote that shows the equipment, the grant position and the VAT.
  4. Fitting day: the outdoor unit is placed, the indoor side connected and the controls set up.
  5. Once it’s running correctly, the MCS certificate is issued and we show you the settings.

Preparing for the visit

  • Dig out any previous service or F-Gas records
  • Make sure we can reach the consumer unit or fuse board
  • Clear a path to the units and the space around them

Getting a price

Some jobs can be priced from pictures, while others need a survey. Bigger systems, commercial sites and awkward pipe routes are normally surveyed on site. Either way, you get a fixed price before any work is booked.

Old Town questions

Can I have air conditioning in a flat in Old Town?

In many cases, yes, once the lease and the building’s rules are checked. Permitted development rules for flats are tighter than for houses, so we check the outdoor unit position and give you the details to send to the freeholder or managing agent.

Can I get the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant in Old Town?

Yes, if the home and the heat pump meet the scheme’s rules: Old Town is in England, where it applies. Whether your home qualifies, and for how much, depends on the type of heat pump and the heating it replaces. You do not apply yourself: the MCS certified installer does, which is us.

Which type of heat pump is right for my home?

Air-to-water heats radiators or underfloor heating and hot water; air-to-air heats rooms through indoor units and can cool them. Air-to-air does not heat hot water and the survey helps decide.

Do you look at the job first?

Yes. We always look before we price, on a survey, or from your pictures and details where the job is simple. Then you get a fixed-price quote.

Do I need to service the system to keep the warranty?

For some brands, yes. Send us the make and model and we’ll tell you what the manufacturer expects, and book the service at the interval they recommend.

How does the warranty work?

The manufacturer’s warranty, on the manufacturer’s terms. Each brand sets its own conditions and periods, so we explain them on your quote.

Can we book visits on a schedule?

Yes. Send details of the systems and how they’re used and we’ll propose a schedule and quote for it. That can include the leak checks the F-gas rules require for larger systems.

From one of our customers

“Office air con broke down in the July heatwave. Called at 8am, engineer was here by noon and fixed within 2 hours. Brilliant emergency response. They now hold the service contract for the whole building.”
