Air conditioning in Old Town

Any installation we do in Old Town follows the same process as everywhere else we work: survey, fixed-price quote, a neat installation, full commissioning and the F-Gas paperwork. The price is fixed up front and the records are handed over at the end. A lot of the calls we get from Old Town are about one room that is too hot to sleep or work in. That’s typically a single wall-mounted split, from £1,200 + VAT.

Most single-room installs in Old Town are done in a day, while multi-split systems for several rooms can take longer, and we leave the room clean and the controls explained.

Top-floor flats and rooms with big south- or west-facing windows tend to be the first to overheat in London. A single wall-mounted unit in the worst room is often where people start, while a multi-split serves several rooms from one outdoor unit, which helps where outside space is limited.

Whatever the visit, you get a written record: commissioning details and F-Gas records for a new system, a note of the fault and the fix for a repair, or a service record. Keep it with the system’s paperwork so it’s to hand next time.

Looking after it afterwards

To keep the system working properly:

  • Let filters dry fully before you put them back
  • Keep the indoor unit’s filters clean
  • Have the system serviced once a year

The handover includes the records you need: the commissioning details, the F-Gas records and the manufacturer’s warranty information. Keep them with the manual, because the manufacturer or a future engineer may ask to see them.

Clean the filters regularly, not just at the service. Blocked filters cut airflow and make the system work harder, which costs you more to run.

How the visit works

Every visit follows the same order: check the plan with you, protect the area, carry out the job, test what we’ve done and talk you through it. The visit itself takes a day or more, depending on the number of rooms, the pipe routes and the access. In a London area like Old Town, parking and access are worth sorting out before the day.

  1. We survey the rooms and the outside of the property, or work from pictures and details for simple jobs.
  2. Each room is sized and you get a fixed-price quote setting out the equipment and the unit positions.
  3. The units go up and the pipework, cable and condensate drain are run neatly between them.
  4. We connect the supply, pressure test the pipework and evacuate it before the refrigerant is released.
  5. Finally, it’s commissioned, tested in each mode and handed over with the F-Gas records.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Let us know where the consumer unit is
  • Plan for pets to be kept clear during the visit
  • Move furniture away from the wall where we will be working

Advice

Before you call an engineer

Some faults have simple causes you can check first: check the mode, the set temperature, the remote’s batteries and the breaker. If the breaker trips a second time, leave it off and call us on 07833 053749 or write to us at info@aircondoctor.co.uk.

Good habits make our visits easier, not unnecessary. Clean filters and a clear outdoor unit help the system run as it should, but the refrigerant circuit, the electrics and the parts you cannot see still need an engineer at the interval the manufacturer recommends.

Do you need air conditioning in Old Town?

Rooms overheat mostly because of heat they gain during the day. Sunshine through glazing, especially on south and west-facing rooms, adds a lot of heat, and the heat lingers long after the sun has moved round.

Reasons to give us a call include:

  • Rooms under the roof that stay hot into the night
  • A study or office that overheats during the day
  • Portable units that are noisy and barely cope

Addington Palace (roughly 3 miles east) shows the area has its share of heritage. A listed home needs consent before an outdoor unit or pipework goes on.

Comparing quotes

Choosing an air con installer

Air conditioning in Old Town: the local picture

VOA council tax data show about 42% of homes in the Old Town area were built in 2000 or later, and the last census (2021) found about 76% of households live in flats. Newer homes are often easier to fit, with cavity walls and space in the loft for pipework. For a flat, we look at balconies, flat roofs and rear walls for the outdoor unit, and the lease often needs checking first. London installs often hinge on outside space, the lease and access to the building.

Plenty of people near West Croydon station split the week between the train and a spare room, and that spare room is often the first to get a unit.

Your questions about air conditioning in Old Town

Will air conditioning in Old Town need planning permission?

That depends on the building and where the outdoor unit goes. The centre of Old Town is in the Parish Church Conservation Area. Permitted development only covers heat pumps that are not used solely for cooling, and not within the grounds of a listed building. Conservation areas add limits on outdoor units facing a road. Where necessary, we check with the planning department at Croydon council, usually the authority for Old Town.

Is Old Town in your area for air conditioning?

We do: Old Town falls inside our working area. Get in touch with the details and we reply the same working day.

What does F-Gas certified mean?

For refrigerant work, both the engineer and the company need the right F-gas credentials. Ask to see proof before booking anyone and we’ll gladly show you ours.

Do you provide F-Gas records?

Yes. It’s the record a manufacturer or the next engineer will ask to see: the date, the work, and any refrigerant added or recovered.

Can landlords and managing agents book you?

Yes. Homeowners, landlords, agents and businesses all book us across London and the South East. Let us know who the records should go to.

How do I know what size unit to get?

Floor area is only part of it. Glazing, orientation, the roof and what goes on in the room all affect it and the survey covers each of them.

Which brands do you work with?

We install and work on the leading makes, including Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin, Fujitsu, Panasonic, Toshiba, LG, Samsung, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Hitachi. Send us the make and model if you have it.
