Air conditioning in RM16: how it works

Wall-mounted, multi-split, ducted and cassette systems are all part of what we install, with VRF for larger buildings. The right choice depends on the rooms, the building and how visible you want the indoor units to be and we talk you through it on the survey. The work covers air-to-air heat pumps, wall-mounted split systems and ceiling cassettes, and the jobs we see most are not knowing which system, size or brand to choose and rooms under the roof that stay hot into the night.

Wherever the system can be run before we leave, we run it and check it in operation. Then we explain what was done and answer your questions, and anything that needs a follow-up is pointed out there and then. The visit takes about a day for a single-room system, longer for multi-room and ducted systems.

  1. We survey the property, or work from your pictures for a simple job.
  2. Each room is sized and the unit positions agreed, then you get a fixed-price quote.
  3. We protect the area, then fit both halves of the system.
  4. We run and connect the pipes, cable and drain, then pressure test and evacuate the circuit.
  5. The system is commissioned, the controls explained and the F-Gas records handed over.

Air conditioning across RM16

In RM16, we install in places such as Grays, Chadwell St Mary and South Stifford and well beyond. We cover every place we list for RM16, 11 in all.

RM16 is part of a working area that runs from Greater London to the Sussex coast and out to Oxfordshire and Essex. You reach the same people wherever you are in it. In the coastal parts of RM16, outdoor units benefit from a sheltered position and regular servicing, and some manufacturers offer corrosion-protected coils.

Chadwell St Mary: Homes near Emmanuel Church are a good example of where we look up the heritage status of the building before fixing anything to it. Bedrooms under the roof and rooms with big sunny windows are typically the first to overheat, so they’re the usual place to start.

After we’ve gone

Systems last better with the right care. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Keep the indoor unit’s filters clean
  • Keep the outdoor unit clear of leaves, plants and clutter
  • Book an annual service
  • Use moderate settings for comfort and economy

Questions after the installation go to the same number. Tell us what the system is doing, and any code on the display, and we will talk it through with you.

Have the system serviced once a year. The engineer cleans the coils and drain, checks the electrics and the refrigerant circuit and catches small problems early, and it keeps any warranty servicing conditions in order.

What owners can safely do

On air conditioning, the filters in the indoor unit are normally the one part owners can clean where the manufacturer’s manual explains how. They come out, get a gentle clean and go back only when they’re dry. On a heat pump, the equivalent is keeping the outdoor unit clear and checking the controls.

Keep a note of anything odd: error codes, noises, drips, smells or a drop in performance. It helps us diagnose quickly, and a photo of the display helps even more.

What air conditioning can’t fix

Before you book, it helps to know what’s not included:

  • Building damp that has a structural cause
  • Central heating repairs
  • Heat loss through very poor insulation (a system will heat the room, but insulation is a separate job)

What the work involves, system by system

Multi-split systems

With a multi-split, one outdoor unit serves two or more rooms. It saves wall space outside and suits homes where several rooms need cooling and each indoor unit has its own controls.

Wall-mounted split systems

Single-room split systems are typically £1,200–£2,200 + VAT, with supply, fitting, commissioning and the F-Gas paperwork included. Long pipe runs, difficult access and a new circuit affect where your job sits in the range.

Questions from RM16

Do you offer emergency call-outs?

Yes. There’s a 24/7 emergency line for breakdowns that can’t wait. Call 07833 053749 and tell us what’s happened.

Are you F-Gas certified?

As the law requires for refrigerant work, we are an F-Gas certified company. We’re also NICEIC approved, MCS certified for heat pumps and Checkatrade members.

Do you work on commercial properties?

Yes. From one rented home to commercial buildings, we work the same way: survey or diagnosis, a fixed price and proper paperwork.

Do you survey before quoting?

Yes, always. We diagnose before we treat: the survey tells us what the job needs and how to do it, and the quote is based on that.

How do I know what size unit to get?

Floor area is only part of it. Glazing, orientation, the roof and what goes on in the room all affect it, and we take them all into account on the survey.

Who is responsible for leak checks?

The operator of the equipment, working with qualified engineers. Larger systems need regular checks: at least every 12 months from 5 tCO2e and every 6 months from 50 tCO2e. We’ll work out which band applies to yours.

Which brands do you work with?

The main ones, including Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin, Fujitsu, Panasonic, Toshiba, LG, Samsung, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Hitachi. For new systems, we recommend a brand and model to suit the job and explain why.
