Air conditioning in RH17: how it works

Most modern split systems run as heat pumps, so they can heat as well as cool. The Energy Saving Trust notes that air-to-air heat pumps are sometimes referred to as air conditioning, so a well-chosen unit can be useful in winter as well as summer. The work covers ducted systems, air-to-air heat pumps and ceiling cassettes, and common reasons people get in touch are uncertainty over the right type and size of system and portable units that are noisy and barely cope.

Think of the visit in three stages: diagnose, treat and sign off. First we check the system or the space against the plan, then the work itself, and finally everything is tested, recorded and explained. Most of the time goes on the middle part, which takes about a day for a single-room system, longer for multi-room and ducted systems.

  1. We survey the property, or work from your photos for a simple job.
  2. Output, positions and price are settled before anything is booked.
  3. Sheets go down first, then the indoor unit and the condenser are mounted.
  4. We run and connect the pipes, cable and drain, then pressure test and evacuate the circuit.
  5. We commission, show you the controls and leave the F-Gas and warranty paperwork.

Pricing in RH17

What you pay reflects the actual work. That is why every job is looked at first, and the price is agreed before we start.

What you get with us

  • A fixed price before any work starts

Get a fixed-price quote

The quickest way to a quote is to send photos: the room or the existing unit, the outside wall or roof where the outdoor unit sits or would go, and the label on any existing unit. Tell us the address and what you need, and many jobs can be priced from that.

Local landmarks in Cuckfield

Locally, jobs take us to houses, flats and workplaces close to The Rose And Crown Public House, Holy Trinity Church of England Primary School and Warden Park School, among other places. You’ll also find Warden Park School (within half a mile south-east) and Holy Trinity Church (less than half a mile south-west). The nearest railway station is Haywards Heath station, roughly 1.5 miles east. Air conditioning across RH17

Planning rules are the same across England, RH17 included: an air-to-air system that heats as well as cools can be permitted development on a house, but cooling-only units, listed buildings and outdoor units facing a road in conservation areas need more care.

RH17 is part of a working area that runs from Greater London to the Sussex coast and out to Oxfordshire and Essex. One phone number covers all of it.

Cuckfield: With historic houses such as Ockenden Manor about 0.4 miles south-west, it’s a reminder that older homes nearby may be listed, which changes the planning rules. Older streets near Holy Trinity Church may fall within a conservation area, so we check the planning position before choosing where the outdoor unit goes.

Pricing air conditioning in RH17

Every job gets its own quote. This is what makes a difference:

  • What electrical work the job needs
  • Access, including height, roofs and ladders
  • The type of system, from a single split to a larger system
  • One-off work versus a regular service cycle

What you pay depends on the system and the number of rooms or units, how easy the units are to reach and what the work involves. We give you a fixed price before any work starts, so there are no surprises.

What to send for a quote

Before you ask for a quote, gather:

  • A photo of the consumer unit with the cover closed
  • The rating plate or label on any existing unit
  • Any previous service or F-Gas records
  • Where the outdoor unit is, or where you’d like it

Quotes do not take long. Send a few details and pictures, and we reply the same working day. If we need to see the property first, we book a survey at a time that works for you.

After we’ve gone

Think of this as the after-treatment advice, in brief:

  • Report drips, noises or error codes straight away
  • Close windows and doors while the system is cooling
  • Keep the handover documents somewhere safe
  • Have the system serviced once a year

If anything is not right after we’ve gone, call us on the same number. Let us know what’s happening and any error code and we’ll help you sort it out.

Set it and leave it. Choose the right mode and a comfortable temperature rather than the lowest setting and keep doors and windows shut while it runs.

What the work involves, system by system

Electrical supply

Most systems need their own circuit from the consumer unit. We’re NICEIC approved, so we fit and certify the circuit ourselves, which takes care of the Part P notification.

Wall-mounted split systems

Single-room split systems are typically £1,200–£2,200 + VAT, including supply, installation, commissioning and F-Gas documentation. Where you sit in that range depends on the pipe run, access and electrics.

Why deal with it now?

Size matters more than brand. An undersized unit runs hard and still cannot keep the room cool; an oversized one cycles on and off and wastes energy. Getting the sizing right at the survey stage avoids both problems.

Questions to ask before you book

  • Which brand and model they’re proposing, and why
  • Which VAT rate the quote uses, and why
  • What happens if the job turns out to be different on the day
  • Whether the company is F-Gas certified, and whether you can check it

Questions from RH17

Do you offer maintenance contracts?

Yes. Send details of the systems and how they’re used and we’ll propose a schedule and quote for it. That can include the leak checks the F-gas rules require for larger systems.

Will you need to do electrical work?

Typically, yes. The fuse board is checked on the survey, and any electrical work goes on the quote and we install and certify the circuit as NICEIC approved contractors.

Do you survey before quoting?

Yes. We always look before we price, on a survey, or from your photos and details where the job is simple. A fixed-price quote follows.

Do you have a 24/7 line?

Yes, 24/7. When you call, tell us the make, what’s happening and any error code, and we’ll advise on what to do next.

Should I choose wall-mounted, ducted or cassette?

There’s no single best type. Wall-mounted splits suit single rooms, multi-splits run several rooms from one outdoor unit, ducted systems hide the unit in the ceiling, and cassettes suit offices and larger rooms. We recommend one on the survey and explain why.

How do you size the system?

Sizing is done on the survey, room by room. Too small, and it runs flat out; too big, and it switches on and off and wastes energy and we explain the output we recommend.

Do you work for landlords and businesses?

Yes. From one rented home to commercial buildings, we work the same way: survey or diagnosis, a fixed price and proper paperwork.
