How air conditioning works in RH1

Good air conditioning starts with the right system in the right place. Each room is assessed for its size, windows, direction and how it’s used, then agree where the indoor and outdoor units go and how the pipework, cable and condensate drain will run, all before the price is fixed. The work covers ceiling cassettes, air-to-air heat pumps and VRF systems, and common reasons people get in touch are a business premises that overheats in summer and fans and portables that don’t keep up.

The first job on site is protection: dust sheets over floors and furniture near the work and nothing is moved without asking you. After that, anything electrical is made safe and we start. The work on site takes a day for most single-room installations, with multi-split, ducted and cassette systems taking longer, and we clear up before we go.

  1. You send photos, or we visit and survey the rooms and outside.
  2. The system is sized, positions are agreed and the price is fixed.
  3. On the day, dust sheets go down and the indoor and outdoor units are fitted.
  4. Connections are made, checked for leaks and pulled down to a vacuum.
  5. The system is commissioned, the controls explained and the F-Gas records handed over.

Where we install in RH1

In RH1, as across England, the same permitted development rules apply: cooling-only units are not covered, listed buildings need consent and conservation areas restrict outdoor units facing a road.

Our area stretches from Greater London through Surrey, Kent and Sussex to Hampshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Hertfordshire and Essex, and RH1 sits within it. You reach the same people wherever you are in it.

Redhill: Around Saint Matthew's Church, a quick check of the listing and conservation maps is part of planning any install. If you commute from Redhill station and work from home on other days, one wall-mounted unit in the home office is often all that is needed.

Signs you need air conditioning

Commercial spaces gain heat from people, equipment, lighting and glazing. Keeping staff and customers comfortable is typically what prompts the call, along with keeping equipment rooms at a steady temperature.

Customers normally contact us when they notice one of these:

  • A study or office that overheats during the day
  • A business premises that overheats in summer
  • Old electric heaters you’d like to replace with something more efficient
  • Not knowing which system, size or brand to choose

Managing agents and facilities teams in RH1

Larger air conditioning systems in buildings need more than servicing: a TM44 inspection by an accredited energy assessor is required at least every 5 years for systems over 12 kW. We can arrange it, prepare the system for it and fix what it finds.

The F-gas rules share responsibility for leak checking between the equipment’s operator and the service technicians. In a let or managed building, it’s worth agreeing who that operator is, and we can work for either side.

Safe owner checks

On air conditioning, the filters in the indoor unit are typically the one part owners can clean where the manufacturer’s manual explains how. They come out, get a gentle clean and go back only when they’re dry. For a heat pump, the main owner jobs are a clear outdoor unit and sensible control settings.

Before you call us about a fault, a few checks can save a visit: check the mode, the set temperature, the remote’s batteries and the breaker. If the breaker trips a second time, leave it off and ring us on 07833 053749.

Aftercare tips

Aftercare is straightforward, and it makes the next visit easier:

  • Choose a comfortable set temperature rather than the lowest
  • Keep to the service interval the manufacturer recommends
  • Report drips, noises or error codes straight away
  • Don’t cover or box in the outdoor unit

The filters are the one part you will look after yourself, so we show you how. In busy periods, clean them every few weeks, following the manual, and keep space clear around the outdoor unit.

Do not ignore small changes. A drip, a noise or a flashing light is often an early sign of a fault and catching it early keeps the repair small.

Your questions about air conditioning in RH1

Do you offer emergency call-outs?

Yes. If something urgent happens, like water coming from a unit or a critical room overheating, call our 24/7 line and we’ll tell you what to do first.

Does servicing affect my warranty?

Check the manufacturer’s terms. Some manufacturers make regular servicing by a qualified engineer a condition of the warranty, so it’s worth checking. Keep every service record either way.

Who has to arrange F-Gas leak checks?

The operator of the equipment, working with qualified engineers. Systems below 5 tCO2e fall outside the set leak check intervals, while larger ones need checks at least every 12 months, or every 6 months from 50 tCO2e. We will work out which band applies to yours.

How does the warranty work?

It’s the manufacturer’s, and the terms are theirs. Some brands make regular servicing a condition so it’s worth keeping the service records.

Can I do any of the installation myself?

No, not the refrigerant side. Under the F-gas rules, it must be done by qualified engineers from a certified company, and a new circuit is notifiable under Part P unless a registered electrician, such as a NICEIC approved contractor, does it.

Do you work for landlords and businesses?

Yes. From a single let flat to offices, shops and public buildings, we work the same way: survey or diagnosis, a fixed price and proper paperwork.

Will I need planning permission?

It depends on the system and the property. In England, an air source heat pump on a house can be permitted development if it meets set conditions, including the MCS 020(a) noise check, but a cooling-only unit is not covered, so check with the council. Flats, listed buildings and conservation areas have tighter rules. This is general information, not legal advice.
