Air conditioning in N9: how it works

We approach an installation much as a doctor approaches a patient: the survey diagnoses what the rooms need, the installation is the treatment and commissioning is the sign-off. At sign-off, the system is tested in each mode, the controls are explained and the F-Gas records are left with you. Typical jobs include a loft room or top floor that bakes in summer and an ageing air conditioning system near the end of its life, across wall-mounted split systems, air-to-air heat pumps and ducted systems.

Refrigerant work is done by qualified engineers working for an F-Gas certified company, and electrical work is done by us as NICEIC approved contractors. So on the day, you do not need a separate electrician for the electrical side. On site, it takes a day for most single-room installations, with multi-split, ducted and cassette systems taking longer.

  1. We start by looking at the rooms, the walls and where the outdoor unit can go.
  2. You receive one fixed figure covering the kit, the fitting and the positions we agreed.
  3. Brackets go on, the units are hung and the refrigerant lines, cable and drain are routed between them.
  4. Once the electrics are connected, the pipework is tested for leaks and put under vacuum before any refrigerant flows.
  5. The system is commissioned and checked in every mode, and we hand over the controls, F-Gas records and warranty information.

What affects the price in N9

Every job is different, so each one gets its own fixed-price quote. The system, the access, the pipe routes and the parts involved all play a part.

What you get with us

  • Diagnosis first, then a fixed price
  • Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin, Fujitsu, Panasonic, Toshiba and more
  • 24/7 emergency line for breakdowns
  • A site survey and a fixed-price quote

How to get a quote

Our prices page gives typical ranges, but your quote is based on your job, because no two buildings, rooms or systems are the same. After a look at the job, by pictures or a survey, the price is fixed. To start, phone 07833 053749 or drop us a line.

Where we install in N9

In N9, we install in places such as Edmonton, Bush Hill Park and Upper Edmonton and well beyond. Every place on our N9 list (6 in all) is covered.

Our area stretches from Greater London through Surrey, Kent and Sussex to Hampshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Hertfordshire and Essex, and N9 sits within it. One phone number covers all of it.

Edmonton: With historic houses such as Bruce Castle about 1.8 miles south, it’s a reminder that older homes nearby may be listed, which changes the planning rules. Close to Edmonton Green station? A small study or box room used for work can usually be cooled with a single indoor unit.

Signs you need air conditioning

Commercial spaces gain heat from people, equipment, lighting and glazing. Keeping staff and customers comfortable is normally what prompts the call, and some rooms need cooling for the equipment as much as the people.

It’s time to call us if you’re dealing with:

  • Old electric heaters you’d like to replace with something more efficient
  • Rooms under the roof that stay hot into the night
  • Rooms that get too hot to sleep or work in
  • A system on old refrigerant that’s due for replacement

Owner checks or an engineer?

Owners can handle the everyday basics: keeping the outdoor unit clear, checking the mode and set temperature, and the routine cleaning in the manual. Anything inside the units, the electrics and the refrigerant is engineer’s work.

Owner care supports servicing; it does not replace it. Clean filters and a clear outdoor unit help the system run as it should, but the inside of the units, the refrigerant and the electrics still need a qualified engineer.

What happens if it’s left?

Size matters more than brand. Too small, and it runs flat out without catching up; too big, and it switches on and off and wastes energy. Sizing each room properly on the survey avoids both.

Questions to ask before booking

  • Who does the electrical work, and whether they can certify it
  • Whether testing, commissioning and paperwork are included
  • If the figure could change on the day
  • Which brand and model they’re proposing, and why

System by system

Wall-mounted split systems

A wall-mounted split is the most common choice for a single room. The indoor unit sits high on a wall, the outdoor unit goes outside, and the two are joined by insulated pipework, a cable and a condensate drain, with the route agreed on the survey.

Electrical supply

We check the consumer unit on the survey, so the quote covers any electrical work needed. Older boards sometimes need more work to take a new circuit, and we explain why if so.

N9: your questions answered

How do you keep the place clean during the work?

Floors and furniture near the work are covered with dust sheets before work begins, and the area is kept tidy throughout. Before we leave, we clear up and run through the work with you.

How do you size the system?

It depends on the room, not only its floor area. Glazing, orientation, the roof and what goes on in the room all affect it and the survey covers each of them.

How quickly will you reply?

The same working day. Then we agree a date that works for you, with a fixed price before work starts.

What does F-Gas certified mean?

Companies working on equipment that contains F gas must be certified by an approved body, and the engineers need their own qualifications. It’s how you know the refrigerant is being handled legally and safely.

Can the outdoor unit go on a roof or at ground level?

The position is agreed on the survey, not on the day. It needs space around it to breathe and room for an engineer to service it, and walls or roofs facing a road can raise planning questions. We will tell you what to check before we fit it.

Which type of air conditioning is best?

The right one depends on how many rooms you want to cool, how much space there is outside and how visible you want the indoor units to be. Ducted units need a void or loft, and cassettes need a suspended ceiling and the survey confirms what’s possible.
