Common questions in Lydd
Do you cover smaller places like Lydd?
Yes, and the size of the place makes no difference to how we work. A few pictures and the postcode are enough to get things started.
Is the coast a problem for outdoor units in Lydd?
It can, as Lydd is within about 3 miles of the sea, where salt in the air is hard on coils and fixings. The outdoor unit position, its fixings and regular servicing all help near the sea.
Do I need to service the system to keep the warranty?
It depends on the manufacturer’s terms. Some warranty terms require the system to be serviced regularly by a qualified engineer, so it’s worth checking. Keep every service record either way.
Can I fit air conditioning or a heat pump myself?
Anything that involves the refrigerant needs an F-Gas qualified engineer from a certified company. That’s the law, not just our preference, and manufacturers expect it for their warranty too. We are happy to quote for the full job, supply to commissioning.
Can I get a grant for an air-to-air heat pump?
The air-to-air grant is £2,500, and only some homes qualify. The system has to replace the fossil-fuel heating and heat the whole home with an MCS certified installer.
What VAT do I pay on a heat pump?
Under HMRC Notice 708/6, a heat pump installed in a home is zero-rated until 31 March 2027, then 5%. For air-to-air systems, we confirm the VAT on your quote.
Who has to arrange F-Gas leak checks?
Whoever operates the equipment, together with the technicians who service it. Systems below 5 tCO2e fall outside the set leak check intervals, while larger ones need checks at least every 12 months, or every 6 months from 50 tCO2e. We can tell you which band your system falls into.
About our air source heat pumps in Lydd
An air-to-water heat pump costs £8,000–£16,000 (0% VAT on homes), before the grant. In England and Wales, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme offers a £7,500 grant towards an eligible air-to-water installation, and as the installer we apply for it on your behalf. Eligibility depends on the property, so we confirm it before anything is agreed. The work covers air-to-air heat pumps, homes heated by oil, LPG or gas and hot water cylinders, and the jobs we see most are comparing heat pump types and checking whether planning permission is needed.
Older homes around Lydd can be draughty or have solid walls, which a heat loss calculation will show. Sometimes insulating first makes more sense.
We’re an F-Gas certified company, NICEIC approved for electrical work, with MCS certification for heat pumps and Checkatrade membership. Refrigerant work is done by engineers who hold the F-gas qualifications the law requires.

Before you call an engineer
Never try to top up, release or handle refrigerant yourself. The law requires anyone working on equipment containing F gas to hold the right qualifications, and the company to be certified, and refrigerant lines can cause cold burns. A suspected leak is our job, not yours.
There are a few things you can safely do yourself: keeping the outdoor unit clear, checking the mode and set temperature, and the routine cleaning in the manual. Anything inside the units, the electrics and the refrigerant is engineer’s work.
What we do, step by step
We book the visit for a day and time that suit you, and we keep you posted if anything changes. When we arrive, we check the job against the survey or the pictures you sent. If something is different, we talk it through with you before carrying on. From there, the work takes several days for an air-to-water system with a new cylinder, less for an air-to-air system. Tell us about any gates or steps at your property near Lydd when you book.
- First we talk through the property and the current system.
- A heat loss survey is carried out, room by room.
- From those figures we size the heat pump and decide on radiators, cylinder and outdoor position.
- A fixed-price quote explains the cost, the grant position and the VAT.
- Installation, commissioning and MCS registration complete the job.
How to prepare
- Clear access to the fuse board
- Arrange for someone to be there to let us in
- Tell us about parking and loading
How to get a quote
Photos are the fastest route to a quote: the inside and outside of the property where the work is, plus the rating plate of any unit already there. Add the address and what you’d like done, and simple jobs can often be priced without a visit.

Different systems, different jobs
Outdoor unit position and planning
Flats and blocks of flats have different limits, and Article 4 directions can remove rights. Listed building consent is a separate matter, and we check the position for your property.
Hot water cylinders
Existing cylinders may not be suitable for a heat pump, and we explain whether yours can stay.
What air source heat pumps cannot fix
Before booking, it helps to know what’s not included:
- Grants for hybrid systems or replacements of low-carbon systems
- Planning approval where permitted development does not apply
- Insulation work, such as loft or cavity wall insulation
If in doubt, ring us on 07833 053749, or email if that’s easier and we will say what we think before you book.

Heat pumps in Lydd: local notes
The coast is only about 3 miles from Lydd. Near the coast, we choose the outdoor unit position with salt-laden wind in mind. The Lydd Conservation Area lies close to the centre of Lydd, within about a third of a mile. About 51 listed entries lie within half a mile of central Lydd, Church of All Saints (grade I) among them. Where a home is affected, the outdoor unit position is settled with Folkestone and Hythe council, usually the planning authority here before the heat pump design is finished. About 77% of households live in detached or semi-detached houses, according to Census 2021 figures. Finding room for the outdoor unit and a cylinder is seldom a problem in homes like these.
A heat loss calculation decides the size of heat pump your home needs. If your home is one of the older properties near All Saints Church, the survey checks whether it’s listed or in a conservation area before the outdoor unit position is chosen.

A customer’s words
“Office air con broke down in the July heatwave. Called at 8am, engineer was here by noon and fixed within 2 hours. Brilliant emergency response. They now hold the service contract for the whole building.”
