What a heat pump looks like in Old Romney
About 73% of households live in detached or semi-detached houses, according to Census 2021 figures. Finding room for the outdoor unit and a cylinder is seldom a problem in homes like these.
Sizing comes from the heat each room loses on a cold day, not from the size of the old boiler. Live in one of the older houses around Church of St Clement? Expect the survey to look closely at heat loss and at the building’s planning status.

How we handle air source heat pumps in Old Romney
Until 31 March 2027, a heat pump installed in residential accommodation carries 0% VAT, with 5% from 1 April 2027. This is HMRC’s energy-saving materials relief, which applies to homes rather than businesses, and for air-to-air systems we confirm the VAT on your quote. This is general information, not tax advice. The work covers air-to-water heat pumps, radiator systems and underfloor heating, and people most often call us about choosing between air-to-water and air-to-air and finding a place for the outdoor unit.
For a home around Old Romney that’s off mains gas and heated by oil or LPG, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme adds an extra £1,500 until March 2027 for an air source or ground source heat pump, on top of the £7,500.
Some warranty terms depend on the system being serviced regularly by a qualified engineer. Where yours does, a regular service with us keeps that side in order and each visit is recorded.

Heat loss surveys
A heat loss survey measures how much heat each room loses on a cold day. It’s the basis for sizing the heat pump and the radiators.
Air-to-water heat pumps
An air-to-water heat pump costs £8,000–£16,000 (0% VAT on homes), before the grant. Eligible homes in England and Wales can get a £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant towards it, and we apply for it as the installer.
How the visit works
The visit goes in the diary at a time that works for you, and we keep you posted if anything changes. When we arrive, we check the job against the survey or the pictures you sent. Anything unexpected is raised with you before we go further. After that, it takes several days for an air-to-water system with a new cylinder, less for an air-to-air system. Photos of the room and the outside of the property help us plan a visit to Old Romney.
- It starts with a conversation about the home, the existing heating and your plans.
- The survey measures heat loss room by room and looks at radiators, hot water and the best spot for the outdoor unit.
- A fixed-price quote follows, setting out the system, any grant that applies and the VAT.
- The outdoor unit, the indoor equipment and the controls are installed and connected.
- We commission the heat pump, complete the MCS paperwork and talk you through the controls.
Before we arrive
- Dig out any previous service or F-Gas records
- Clear access to the fuse board
- Give us access to the outside wall, roof or yard where the outdoor unit sits

Our prices page gives typical ranges, but your quote is based on your job, because no two buildings, rooms or systems are the same. After a look at the job, by pictures or a survey, the price is fixed. To start, phone us on 07833 053749 or fill in the contact form.

Your questions about air source heat pumps in Old Romney
Can I get the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant in Old Romney?
Yes, if the home and the heat pump meet the scheme’s rules: Old Romney is in England, where it applies. Whether your home qualifies, and for how much, depends on the type of heat pump and the heating it replaces. You do not apply yourself: the MCS certified installer does, which is us.
Can I fit a heat pump in Old Romney without planning permission?
It comes down to the building and the spot chosen for the outdoor unit. There’s a conservation area, the Old Romney Conservation Area, close to central Old Romney. The permitted development rules for heat pumps leave out listed buildings and stop outdoor units going on road-facing walls or roofs in conservation areas. Anything outside the rules needs an application, and we raise it with the planning department at Folkestone and Hythe council, typically the authority for Old Romney first.
How quickly will you reply?
The same working day. Then we agree a date that works for you, and you get a fixed price before any work goes ahead.
How much time does a heat pump install need?
It takes from a couple of days to around a week, depending on the system and how much of the heating changes. How much of the heating changes decides most of the time and the timing is set out with your quote.
Do you work in Old Romney?
Yes. We work in Old Romney and across Kent, as part of our area across London and the South East. For a fixed-price quote, phone us on 07833 053749 or fill in the contact form.
Can you look at a system you didn’t fit?
Yes. We work on systems fitted by other installers as well as our own, on all the main brands. Send us the make and model, and any records you have.
Which type of heat pump is right for my home?
The right choice depends on the property and what you need. Air-to-water can attract a £7,500 grant where eligible; air-to-air only qualifies for £2,500 under strict conditions, and we set out the options after the survey.
What owners can safely do
Refrigerant is off limits for anyone without the right qualifications. The law requires anyone working on equipment containing F gas to hold the right qualifications, and the company to be certified, and escaping refrigerant can cause cold burns. A suspected leak is our job, not yours.
For air conditioning, cleaning the indoor unit’s filters is the main job owners can do, if the manual says so. With the power off, they lift out, can be vacuumed or rinsed and must be fully dry before they go back. On a heat pump, the equivalent is keeping the outdoor unit clear and checking the controls.
A customer’s words
“Office air con broke down in the July heatwave. Called at 8am, engineer was here by noon and fixed within 2 hours. Brilliant emergency response. They now hold the service contract for the whole building.”
