Air source heat pumps in Greatstone-on-Sea
Many air source heat pumps can be installed as permitted development in England, without a planning application. Conditions include a maximum outdoor unit size of 1.5 m³, compliance with MCS 020(a), use for more than cooling alone and a site outside the curtilage of a listed building. We check the rules for your property as part of the survey. We’re often asked to deal with planning and permitted development questions and plans to switch to electric heating with a heat pump, across air-to-water heat pumps, hot water cylinders and underfloor heating.
Space for an outdoor unit is rarely an issue near Greatstone-on-Sea, so the design comes down to heat loss, radiators and hot water.
Equipment warranty comes from the manufacturer, on its own terms, and we set them out on your quote. Terms differ from brand to brand, and we’re happy to talk you through them.

Before you call an engineer
On air conditioning, the filters in the indoor unit are normally the one part owners can clean, if the manual says so. With the power off, they lift out, can be vacuumed or rinsed and must be fully dry before they go back. For a heat pump, the main owner jobs are a clear outdoor unit and sensible control settings.
Do not move, re-route or disconnect units or pipework yourself. Disconnecting a system means dealing with refrigerant, which only a qualified engineer can do, and the electrics need care too. Ask us to quote for a move instead.
When to call us in Greatstone-on-Sea
For homes with no mains gas, heated by oil or LPG, a heat pump is well worth considering. Until March 2027, an extra £1,500 is available for air source and ground source heat pumps in homes heated by oil or LPG with no mains gas where the home is eligible.
If any of these sounds familiar, it’s worth a diagnosis:
- An oil, LPG or gas boiler near the end of its life
- Planning and permitted development questions
- Checking emitters for a heat pump
If your home is one of the older properties near St Peter's, the survey checks whether it’s listed or in a conservation area before the outdoor unit position is chosen.

Keeping the system healthy
Looking after the system is mostly common sense. A few tips:
- Don’t block radiators or indoor units with furniture
- Leave space around the outdoor unit
- Find out the grant position at the survey
The warranty on the heat pump is the manufacturer’s, on its own terms. We go through the conditions with you, including any servicing they ask for.
A well-insulated home helps a heat pump because it reduces the heat the system needs to supply.
Air source heat pumps in Greatstone-on-Sea: the local picture
Greatstone-on-Sea is within about 1 mile of the coast. Coastal sites are worth mentioning at the survey, as salt air affects the outdoor unit and its fixings. The last census (2021) found about 73% of households in detached or semi-detached houses. Finding room for the outdoor unit and a cylinder is seldom a problem in homes like these.
A heat loss calculation decides the size of heat pump your home needs.

Greatstone-on-Sea questions
Does the Boiler Upgrade Scheme cover homes in Greatstone-on-Sea?
Yes, the scheme covers homes in England, including Greatstone-on-Sea, if they qualify. It gives £7,500 towards an air-to-water or ground source heat pump, or £2,500 towards an air-to-air heat pump that replaces the fossil-fuel heating and meets the whole home’s heating need. As an MCS certified installer, we apply for it on your behalf.
Is Greatstone-on-Sea within the area you cover?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. Send a few details and photos, and we reply the same working day.
How long will it take to install a heat pump?
An installation takes anything from a couple of days for air-to-air to the best part of a week for air-to-water with radiator changes. We confirm the timing after the survey, and you can give us a ring on 07833 053749 or email us to book it.
How much does an air source heat pump cost?
Air-to-water installations cost £8,000–£16,000 (0% VAT on homes), before the grant. Air-to-air systems are priced after a survey, with the VAT confirmed on your quote.
Who is responsible for leak checks?
The F-gas rules share it between the equipment’s operator and the engineers who work on it. The interval depends on the refrigerant charge, measured in tonnes of CO2 equivalent: at least every 12 months from 5 tCO2e, and every 6 months from 50 tCO2e.
What accreditations do you have?
As the law requires for refrigerant work, we are an F-Gas certified company. NICEIC approval, MCS certification for heat pumps and Checkatrade membership sit alongside it.
Will you work on another installer’s system?
Yes. We start with a proper look and tell you honestly what we find, including any issues with how it was fitted. You get a fixed price before any work goes ahead.
