What you can do yourself, and what needs us

Some faults have simple causes you can check first: is the system in the right mode, is the set temperature sensible, are the remote’s batteries working and has the breaker tripped. If the breaker trips a second time, leave it off and phone 07833 053749, or email if that’s easier.

Refrigerant is off limits for anyone without the right qualifications. The law requires anyone working on equipment containing F gas to hold the right qualifications, and the company to be certified, and escaping refrigerant can cause cold burns. A suspected leak is our job, not yours.

About our air source heat pumps in Dungeness

A £2,500 grant is available for some air-to-air heat pumps, with conditions. The system must replace the existing fossil-fuel heating and meet the home’s full heating demand, it must be installed by an MCS certified installer, and it must be in a home, so an add-on next to a boiler is not eligible. If you are dealing with deciding which kind of heat pump suits the home and not knowing whether a grant applies, we can sort it out.

Older and listed homes in villages like Dungeness need extra care, because permitted development does not apply within the grounds of a listed building, so consent comes first.

Some warranty terms depend on the system being serviced regularly by a qualified engineer. If that applies to your system, booking the service on time keeps the record straight and each visit is recorded.

Why act early in Dungeness

Choosing between air-to-water and air-to-air is easier with the facts. Air-to-water works with radiators and a cylinder, with a £7,500 grant for eligible homes, while air-to-air heats and cools rooms and has a £2,500 grant only in limited cases, and we explain which fits your home. A dirty or faulty system works harder and costs more to run.

Every job is different, so we price each one individually. The system, the access, the pipe routes and the parts involved all make a difference.

Common questions in Dungeness

Is planning permission needed for a heat pump in Dungeness?

It comes down to the building and the spot chosen for the outdoor unit. The Dungeness Conservation Area takes in the middle of Dungeness. The permitted development rules for heat pumps leave out listed buildings and stop outdoor units going on road-facing walls or roofs in conservation areas. Anything outside the rules needs an application, and we raise it with the local planning authority (for Dungeness, normally Folkestone and Hythe council) first.

Do you cover smaller places like Dungeness?

We do. Villages and hamlets get the same service as the bigger towns. We’re based in East Grinstead and plan each visit so the job can be finished in one trip where possible.

What does F-Gas certified mean?

The law says any company working on equipment containing F gas has to be certified, and the engineers need their own qualifications. It means the refrigerant in your system is handled legally.

What’s the price of a heat pump installation?

Air-to-water installations cost £8,000–£16,000 (0% VAT on homes), before the grant. Air-to-air systems are priced after a survey, with the VAT confirmed on your quote.

Can I do the refrigerant work myself?

No, not the refrigerant side. Under the F-gas rules, it must be done by qualified engineers from a certified company, and a new circuit is notifiable under Part P unless a registered electrician, such as a NICEIC approved contractor, does it.

Do I need new radiators for a heat pump?

It varies from room to room. We check them all during the survey and the quote shows what’s needed.

Do you work on commercial properties?

Yes. From a single let flat to offices, shops and public buildings, we work the same way: survey or diagnosis, a fixed price and proper paperwork.

The process

Anything involving refrigerant is handled by F-Gas qualified engineers, as the law requires, and electrical work is done by us as NICEIC approved contractors. So on the day, you do not need a separate electrician for the electrical side. The work takes a few days on site, depending on the cylinder, the radiators and the pipework involved. Pictures of the space and where the outdoor unit could go let us plan the work in Dungeness.

  1. We find out about your home and the heating you have now.
  2. We measure heat loss for every room.
  3. From those figures we size the heat pump and decide on radiators, cylinder and outdoor position.
  4. You get a fixed price, with any grant and the VAT set out.
  5. Then it’s fitted, commissioned and registered with MCS.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Tell us about parking and loading
  • Mention any roof access, ladders or high-level work
  • Let us know if the building has a permit or sign-in process

Getting a quote

The quickest way to a quote is to send photos: the inside and outside of the property where the work is, plus the rating plate of any unit already there. Add the address and what you’d like done, and simple jobs can often be priced without a visit.

Advice

What air conditioning won’t do

We will not sell you work that doesn’t address the problem, so here are the limits:

  • Planning approval where permitted development doesn’t apply
  • A grant for a home that does not meet the scheme rules
  • Insulation work, such as loft or cavity wall insulation

If in doubt, call 07833 053749 or use the quote form and we will say what we think.

Parts of the system we cover

  • Homes heated by oil, LPG or gas

Homes in Dungeness and heat pumps

At about 1 mile from the coast, Dungeness is close enough for sea air to matter. For a heat pump near the sea, ask about any coastal protection option the manufacturer offers. The 2021 Census found about 77% of households in detached or semi-detached houses. Finding room for the outdoor unit and a cylinder is seldom a problem in homes like these.

Sizing comes from the heat each room loses on a cold day, not from the size of the old boiler. As an MCS certified installer, we can apply for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant for you.
