Air conditioning in Dungeness

How we handle air conditioning in Dungeness

Most modern split systems run as heat pumps, so they can heat as well as cool. The Energy Saving Trust makes the same point: an air-to-air heat pump is what many people simply call air conditioning, so a well-chosen unit can be useful in winter as well as summer. A lot of the calls we get from Dungeness are about one room that is too hot to sleep or work in. That’s usually a single wall-mounted split, from £1,200 + VAT.

Around Dungeness, many people choose a system that heats as well as cools, which suits garden rooms, lofts and extensions that the main heating struggles with.

Looking after a system is mostly common sense: clear space around the outdoor unit, the cleaning the manual describes and a service at the recommended interval. That also helps where the warranty terms ask for regular servicing.

What air conditioning will not do

Air conditioning cannot fix everything, and we’d rather say so up front. It will not put right:

  • Gas boiler or central heating faults (we do not work on gas boilers)
  • Draughts and missing insulation
  • Damp from leaks or a lack of ventilation

Not sure which it is? You can phone us on 07833 053749 or write to us at info@aircondoctor.co.uk and we will tell you honestly.

What the work covers

  • VRF systems
  • Wall-mounted split systems
  • Ducted systems
  • Multi-split systems
  • Air-to-air heat pumps
  • Ceiling cassettes

Why deal with it now?

The best time to plan air conditioning is before the hot weather, not during it. A rushed choice is often the wrong size or in the wrong place, which is costly to undo. A survey now gives time to choose properly. A system that is left with a fault, or without a service, usually costs more to run.

What you pay reflects the actual work. That is why we look at the job first, from pictures or on a survey, and why the quote is fixed before work begins.

Different systems, different jobs

Ceiling cassettes

Cassettes need space above the ceiling and a route for the condensate, and many use a built-in condensate pump to lift the water away. The survey confirms the void and the drain route.

Ducted systems

Ducted systems need space for the unit and the ductwork, and access for servicing. The survey confirms whether there’s room.

Homes in Dungeness and air conditioning

The coast is only about 1 mile from Dungeness. Near the sea, outdoor unit position matters more: sheltered from salt-laden wind where possible, on fixings that won’t rust. About 77% of households live in detached or semi-detached houses, according to the 2021 Census. Houses usually have a side or rear wall with room for the outdoor unit, and a multi-split can serve several rooms from one outdoor unit.

Most people start with the room that gets hottest, then add more rooms on a multi-split if needed. Many split systems run in heating mode too, which makes them useful outside summer.

Dungeness questions

Do I need planning permission for air conditioning in Dungeness?

That depends on the building and where the outdoor unit goes. The Dungeness Conservation Area takes in the middle of Dungeness. Permitted development only covers heat pumps that aren’t used solely for cooling, and not within the grounds of a listed building. Conservation areas add limits on outdoor units facing a road. Where necessary, we check with the local planning authority (for Dungeness, usually Folkestone and Hythe council).

Will you come out to Dungeness?

Yes, and the size of the place makes no difference to how we work. A few photos and the postcode are enough to get things started.

Why use an F-Gas certified company?

Anyone installing, repairing or servicing the refrigerant side must be qualified, and their company certified. Ask to see proof before you book anyone, and we are happy to show ours.

Do you protect the property while you work?

Floors and furniture near the work are covered with dust sheets before any work starts, and we tidy up as we go. At the end, we clear up and show you what we have done.

Does servicing affect my warranty?

It depends on the manufacturer’s terms. Some warranty terms require the system to be serviced regularly by a qualified engineer, so check the terms or ask us. Keep every service record either way.

Do I need a new electrical circuit?

Most systems need their own supply from the consumer unit. Under Part P, a new circuit has to be notified unless a registered competent person does it, and we’re NICEIC approved, so we can install and certify it.

Where will you put the outdoor unit?

We agree it with you on the survey. It must have clear airflow and space for servicing, and walls or roofs facing a road can raise planning questions. We explain the options and any permissions to check.

How the visit works

Each visit runs to the same pattern: check the plan with you, protect the area, carry out the job, check the system and explain it all to you. On site, the work takes anything from a day for one room to several days for a multi-room or ducted system. For a place like Dungeness, the timing is set with you and the travel is our side of the planning.

  1. We survey the property, or work from your pictures for a simple job.
  2. Output, positions and price are settled before anything is booked.
  3. On the day, dust sheets go down and the indoor and outdoor units are fitted.
  4. We run and connect the pipes, cable and drain, then pressure test and evacuate the circuit.
  5. It’s switched on, checked and handed over with its records.

Preparing for the visit

  • Clear the space around the indoor unit, or where it will go
  • Find the manual or the paperwork for the system, if you have it
  • Let us know if the building has a permit or sign-in process

How to get a quote

Photos are the fastest route to a quote: the room or the existing unit, the outside wall or roof where the outdoor unit sits or would go, and the label on any existing unit. Add the address and what you’d like done, and simple jobs can often be priced without a visit.
