About our air source heat pumps in Ladywell

We install air source heat pumps in Ladywell and across Greater London, and we’re MCS certified. Air-to-water systems feed your radiators or underfloor heating and hot water cylinder, while air-to-air systems heat rooms directly through indoor units and can cool them too. We’ll explain which type fits your home and why. We are often asked to deal with questions about listed buildings or conservation areas and wanting to stop using oil, LPG or gas for heating, on hot water cylinders, homes heated by oil, LPG or gas and radiator systems.

A terrace in Ladywell shares walls with its neighbours, which helps keep heat in, provided the outdoor unit can sit somewhere that passes the MCS noise check.

The records are your system’s health record: a dated account of the work and the readings we took. It makes the next visit quicker and any warranty question simpler, so keep it safe.

How the visit works

We book the visit for a day and time that suit you, and we keep you posted if anything changes. On arrival, the engineer compares the job with the survey, your photos or the details you gave us. Anything unexpected is raised with you before we go further. After that, it takes anything from a couple of days for air-to-air to the best part of a week for air-to-water with radiator changes. If your building in Ladywell has a managing agent, a concierge or sign-in rules, mention them when you book.

  1. It starts with a conversation about the home, the existing heating and your plans.
  2. The survey measures heat loss room by room and looks at radiators, hot water and the best spot for the outdoor unit.
  3. We send a fixed-price quote that shows the equipment, the grant position and the VAT.
  4. The outdoor unit, the indoor equipment and the controls are installed and connected.
  5. Commissioning, MCS certification and a handover of the controls finish the job.

How to prepare

  • Give us access to the outside wall, roof or yard where the outdoor unit sits
  • Arrange for someone to be there to let us in
  • Plan for pets to be kept clear during the visit

What you can do yourself, and what needs us

Good habits make our visits easier, not unnecessary. Clean filters and a clear outdoor unit help the system run as it should, but the inside of the units, the refrigerant and the electrics still need a qualified engineer.

On air conditioning, the filters in the indoor unit are usually the one part owners can clean, if the manual says so. With the power off, they lift out, can be vacuumed or rinsed and must be fully dry before they go back. On a heat pump, the equivalent is keeping the outdoor unit clear and checking the controls.

Leave it or put it right?

For eligible off-gas homes on oil or LPG, an extra £1,500 is on offer until March 2027. If that applies to you, it’s worth asking about sooner rather than later. Booking in spring means a home or office in Ladywell is ready before the first hot week.

Putting the work off seldom saves money. Small problems, from blocked filters to slow leaks, tend to get worse, and a struggling system uses more electricity to do less. If you are unsure, call us on 07833 053749 or fill in the contact form for straight advice and a fixed price.

Questions from Ladywell

Can you fit air conditioning in a London flat in Ladywell?

Normally, yes, though leaseholders normally need the freeholder’s agreement. We look at where the outdoor unit could go, such as a balcony, flat roof or rear wall, and write it up for the freeholder or agent.

Will a heat pump in Ladywell need planning permission?

There’s no single answer: the building and the outdoor unit position decide it. Central Ladywell is a short walk from the St Mary's Conservation Area. A heat pump on a house can be permitted development if it meets the conditions, including the MCS noise check, but not within the grounds of a listed building, and in a conservation area the outdoor unit can’t face a road. Where necessary, we check with Lewisham council, which is usually the planning authority for Ladywell.

How soon will you get back to me?

On the same working day you contact us. Then we agree a date that works for you, with a fixed price before work starts.

Who is responsible for leak checks?

The operator of the equipment, working with qualified engineers. Systems below 5 tCO2e fall outside the set leak check intervals, while larger ones need checks at least every 12 months, or every 6 months from 50 tCO2e. We can tell you which band your system falls into.

Can I get a grant for an air-to-air heat pump?

Only in limited cases, with a grant of £2,500. It has to replace the fossil-fuel heating, meet the full heating demand, be fitted by an MCS certified installer, and be in a home.

Can we book visits on a schedule?

Yes. Maintenance contracts are part of what we do, set at the interval the system and the manufacturer’s terms need. Each visit is recorded, with F-Gas records where refrigerant work is involved.

How much does an air source heat pump cost?

Expect £8,000–£16,000 for an air-to-water system, with 0% VAT on homes, before the grant is taken off. The heat pump size, radiator changes and the cylinder decide where in that range you are, and air-to-air systems are priced after a survey.

What air conditioning won’t do

To be straight with you, some problems need a different answer:

  • Gas boiler work, such as disconnecting the old boiler, which needs a Gas Safe registered engineer
  • Improving the building’s insulation
  • Planning approval where permitted development doesn’t apply

If in doubt, call 07833 053749, or email if that’s easier and we’ll say what we think before you book.

Homes in Ladywell and heat pumps

The Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures put about 58% of homes in Ladywell and the neighbourhoods around it before 1919, and the last census (2021) found about 62% of households live in flats. Period properties can still suit a heat pump, but the design has to start from accurate heat loss figures. Flats are often harder for air-to-water systems, so we look at whether air-to-air suits better. For a London home, the outdoor unit position and the MCS noise check need careful planning.

If your home is near Ladywell station and heated by a gas boiler, an air-to-water heat pump can replace it where the survey shows it suits. Live in one of the older houses around Church of St Mary the Virgin? Expect the survey to look closely at heat loss and at the building’s planning status.
