- Radiators that may be too small for a heat pump
- Choosing between air-to-water and air-to-air
- Moving away from fossil-fuel heating
Looking after it afterwards
Every system needs looking after, and most of it is easy. A few tips:
- Keep to regular servicing
- Store the MCS certificate and warranty documents together
- Avoid switching the heat pump on and off often
If you were eligible for a grant, we handle the application and keep you updated, as the installer applies for it.
Let the heat pump run steadily rather than switching it on and off, using the settings agreed at handover.
How we handle air source heat pumps in Downside
Air-to-water heat pumps heat your hot water through a cylinder. If you have a combi boiler and no cylinder, the survey looks at where one could go. Air-to-air systems do not heat hot water, so you’ll need another way to do that. If you’re dealing with wanting to stop using oil, LPG or gas for heating and an oil, LPG or gas boiler near the end of its life, we can help.
If your home in or near Downside is heated by oil, LPG or electric heaters with no mains gas, an extra £1,500 is available through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme until March 2027, on top of the £7,500.
Each manufacturer sets its own warranty period. Daikin, for instance, gives a standard 2 years on split air conditioning, with longer extensions only on its air-to-water heat pumps. Whatever the brand, the manufacturer’s terms are explained on your quote.

Common questions in Downside
Is a heat pump in Downside permitted development?
It comes down to the building and the spot chosen for the outdoor unit. Central Downside sits inside the Downside Village Conservation Area. Heat pumps on houses are often permitted development, but listed buildings need consent and conservation areas restrict outdoor units facing a road. Where it’s needed, we check with the local planning authority (for Downside, typically Elmbridge council).
Can I get the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant in Downside?
Yes, the scheme covers homes in England, including Downside, if they qualify. It gives £7,500 towards an air-to-water or ground source heat pump, or £2,500 towards an air-to-air heat pump that replaces the fossil-fuel heating and meets the whole home’s heating need. We hold MCS certification, so the application is ours to make for you.
Whose job is it to check the system for leaks?
The operator of the equipment, working with qualified engineers. Systems below 5 tCO2e fall outside the set leak check intervals, while larger ones need checks at least every 12 months, or every 6 months from 50 tCO2e. We can tell you which band your system falls into.
Do you work on all makes?
The main ones, including Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin, Fujitsu, Panasonic, Toshiba, LG, Samsung, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Hitachi. For a new system, we suggest the make and model that suit the property and tell you why.
Do you work in Downside?
Yes. Our area takes in London and the counties of the South East, Downside included.
Which accreditations do you hold?
As the law requires for refrigerant work, we are an F-Gas certified company. We’re also NICEIC approved, MCS certified for heat pumps and Checkatrade members.
Do you offer emergency call-outs?
Yes, day and night. Call the emergency line and tell us the make, the symptoms and any error code, and we’ll talk you through the next steps.
How the visit works
Protection comes first: sheets over the floor and any furniture nearby and nothing is moved without asking you. Then the electrics are made safe and the work begins. The work on site takes from a couple of days to around a week, depending on the system and how much of the heating changes, and we clear up before we go. Visits to Downside are agreed with you in advance and planned so the job can be finished in one trip where possible.
- First we talk through the property and the current system.
- Every room’s heat loss is worked out on site.
- The design covers the heat pump, emitters, hot water and outdoor unit.

- Then it’s fitted, commissioned and registered with MCS.
