Homes in Capel and heat pumps

Census 2021 figures found about 72% of households in detached or semi-detached houses. Houses normally have space for an outdoor unit and a hot water cylinder. Roughly a third of a mile or less from central Capel, you reach the Capel Conservation Area. Church of St. John the Baptist, listed at grade II*, is one of roughly 11 protected buildings and structures in the half-mile around Capel’s centre. For a heat pump, permitted development does not apply within the grounds of a listed building, and in a conservation area the outdoor unit can’t go on a wall or roof facing a road, so we check with Mole Valley council, typically the planning authority here where needed.

For a home near Ockley station, the survey looks at whether an air-to-water or air-to-air heat pump suits better. If your home is one of the older properties near Church of St John the Baptist, the survey checks whether it’s listed or in a conservation area before the outdoor unit position is chosen.

Air source heat pumps for homes and businesses in Capel

A £2,500 grant is available for some air-to-air heat pumps, with conditions. It has to replace the fossil-fuel heating, cover the whole heating demand, be fitted by an MCS certified installer and be in a home, so an add-on next to a boiler is not eligible. The work covers air-to-air heat pumps, radiator systems and hot water cylinders, and the jobs we see most are ageing boilers that will need replacing and checking whether planning permission is needed.

For a home around Capel that’s off mains gas and heated by oil or LPG, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme adds an extra £1,500 until March 2027 for an air source or ground source heat pump.

Some manufacturers make regular servicing by a qualified engineer a condition of their warranty. Where yours does, a regular service with us keeps that side in order, and every service is written up.

Aftercare tips

Every system needs looking after, and most of it is easy. Our tips:

  • Use the settings explained at handover
  • Check eligibility for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme early
  • Diary the next service

The warranty on the heat pump is the manufacturer’s, on its own terms. We go through the conditions with you, including any servicing they ask for.

A well-insulated home helps a heat pump because it reduces the heat the system needs to supply.

What owners can safely do

On air conditioning, the filters in the indoor unit are normally the one part owners can clean where the manufacturer’s manual explains how. With the power off, they lift out, can be vacuumed or rinsed and must be fully dry before they go back. On a heat pump, the equivalent is keeping the outdoor unit clear and checking the controls.

Keep a note of anything odd: an error code, a new noise, a drip, a smell or a change in how well the system heats or cools. It makes our diagnosis quicker, and a photo of the display helps even more.

FAQs for Capel

Can I get the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant in Capel?

Capel is covered, as the scheme runs across England and Wales. The amount depends on the type of heat pump, and the survey confirms which applies. As an MCS certified installer, we apply for it on your behalf.

Will you come out to Capel?

Yes, and the size of the place makes no difference to how we work. Send a few details and pictures, and we reply the same working day.

Will you work on another installer’s system?

Yes. We work on systems fitted by other installers as well as our own, on all the main brands. Send us the make and model, and any records you have.

Do you protect the property while you work?

Floors and furniture near the work are covered with dust sheets before work begins, and the area is kept tidy throughout. At the end, we clear up and show you what we have done.

Can I do the refrigerant work myself?

Not the refrigerant work. The F-gas rules require certified companies and qualified engineers for it, and a new circuit is notifiable under Part P unless a registered electrician, such as a NICEIC approved contractor, does it.

Will my radiators work with a heat pump?

Some radiators may be fine as they are, and some may need to be larger. At the lower temperatures a heat pump uses, radiators need more surface, and the survey checks each one.

How soon will you get back to me?

The same working day. Then we agree a date that works for you, and you get a fixed price before any work goes ahead.

What happens on the day

The work area is kept tidy throughout, with dust sheets down and offcuts and packaging cleared up. Any holes, fixings or cable routes are agreed with you before we drill. On site, it takes a few days for most air-to-water installations, with air-to-air systems often quicker. If a lane or gateway near Capel is tight for a van, let us know and we will plan for it.

  1. First we talk through the property and the current system.
  2. A heat loss survey is carried out, room by room.
  3. We design the system, check the radiators and cylinder and look at the outdoor unit position.
  4. You get a fixed price, with any grant and the VAT set out.
  5. We install, commission and register the system under MCS.

Before we arrive

  • Let us know where we can park and unload
  • Have the make and model of any existing unit to hand
  • Clear the space around the indoor unit, or where it will go

Leave it or put it right?

A heat pump sized without a proper heat loss survey can struggle in cold weather or run inefficiently. Doing the survey properly from the start avoids that. A dirty or faulty system works harder and costs more to run.

What you pay reflects the actual work. That’s why we look at the job first, from photos or on a survey, and why the quote is fixed before work begins.
