About our air source heat pumps in The Chart
Air-to-air heat pumps can qualify for a £2,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, but only in some cases. The system must replace the existing fossil-fuel heating and meet the home’s full heating demand, it must be installed by an MCS certified installer, and it must be in a home, so an add-on next to a boiler is not eligible. Typical jobs include replacing a combi boiler with a heat pump and not knowing whether a grant applies, across hot water cylinders, homes heated by oil, LPG or gas and radiator systems.
In a place like The Chart, some homes are listed, because permitted development doesn’t apply within the grounds of a listed building, so consent comes first.
Refrigerant work is written up in the F-Gas records: what was done, the refrigerant type and any amount added or recovered. File them with the system’s paperwork, as a manufacturer or a future engineer may ask to see them.

The Chart: your questions answered
Will a heat pump in The Chart need planning permission?
It depends on the property. Around 5 listed entries sit within 0.5 miles of central The Chart. On a house, an air source heat pump can often go ahead under permitted development, with an outdoor unit of no more than 1.5 cubic metres and an installation that meets MCS 020(a), which includes a noise check. Those rights don’t reach the grounds of a listed building, and conservation areas rule out walls or roofs facing a road. If that might affect you, we ask the local planning authority (for The Chart, typically Tandridge council).
Will you come out to The Chart?
Yes. The Chart is within the area we cover across London and the South East. A few pictures and the postcode are enough to get things started.
Is there VAT on a heat pump?
For homes, currently none: HMRC zero-rates heat pumps installed in residential accommodation until 31 March 2027, and 5% applies after that. Businesses and hotels pay the standard rate, and for air-to-air systems we confirm the VAT on your quote. This is general information, not tax advice.
Why use an F-Gas certified company?
F-Gas certification shows a company is approved to work on equipment containing fluorinated gases, such as the refrigerant in air conditioning and heat pumps. That isn’t optional: it’s required by law, and we hold it.
Do you offer emergency call-outs?
Yes, 24/7. When you call, tell us the make, what’s happening and any error code, and we’ll advise on what to do next.
What does an air-to-water heat pump cost?
Air-to-water systems are £8,000–£16,000 (0% VAT on homes), before any grant. Your price depends on the survey, the emitters and the hot water and the quote is fixed.
Do you work on all makes?
Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin, Fujitsu, Panasonic, Toshiba, LG, Samsung, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Hitachi and others. For new systems, we recommend a brand and model to suit the job and tell you why.
Heat pumps in The Chart: local notes
VOA council tax data date about 42% of homes in and around The Chart to the post-war years, 1945 to 1972, and about 63% of households live in detached or semi-detached houses, according to the last census (2021). Whether the walls and loft have been insulated makes a real difference to the heat pump size for homes of that period. Detached and semi-detached houses typically have room for the outdoor unit and a cylinder.
Chartwell, roughly 1.9 miles east, is a reminder to check your home’s listing status: permitted development does not cover listed buildings.

How it works
The visit has three parts, a bit like a doctor’s appointment: look, put right and sign off. First comes a careful look at the system or the space, then we do the work, and finally we test, record and explain. Most of the time goes on the middle part, and that takes several days for an air-to-water system with a new cylinder, less for an air-to-air system. A few photos help us make the most of a visit to The Chart.
- First we find out about the property, the heating you have now and what you’re hoping for.
- We survey the home room by room for heat loss, and check the emitters, hot water and outdoor unit position.
- You get a fixed-price quote, with any grant you are eligible for and the VAT explained.
- Installation covers the outdoor unit, the indoor connections and the controls.
- Commissioning, MCS certification and a handover of the controls finish the job.

Getting a price
Published ranges are a starting point; the quote is built on your property, because every property is different. After a look at the job, by photos or a survey, the price is fixed. To get going, phone us on 07833 053749 or email us.
Advice
What the work involves, system by system
Air-to-water heat pumps
The price for air-to-water is £8,000–£16,000 (0% VAT on homes), before the grant. A £7,500 grant may be available through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme for eligible homes, and we apply for it as the installer.
Radiators and underfloor heating
If radiators need upsizing, the quote lists them, so the work is clear.
Looking after your system
Every system needs looking after, and most of it is easy. Our tips:
- Store the MCS certificate and warranty documents together
- Keep radiators clear
- Clear leaves and debris from the outdoor unit
If you were eligible for a grant, we handle the application and keep you updated since the grant goes through the installer.
Leave space around the outdoor unit. Airflow is what it runs on, so keep it clear all year.
What else we do in The Chart
Do you need air source heat pumps in The Chart?
When a home is being extended or renovated, it’s a good moment to look at heat pumps. Pipework, radiators and space for a cylinder are easier to plan while work is going on.
Common reasons people call us are:
- An oil, LPG or gas boiler near the end of its life
- Deciding on the outdoor unit position
- Comparing heat pump types
If your home is one of the older properties near St Andrew's, the survey checks whether it’s listed or in a conservation area before the outdoor unit position is chosen.
What to look for in a quote
- If the quote is based on a survey, photos or a diagnosis
- Whether the company is F-Gas certified, and whether you can check it
- What the manufacturer’s warranty covers and for how long
