Air source heat pumps near St George's Hill

How the job changes from property to property

Air-to-air heat pumps

Air-to-air heat pumps are now covered by permitted development rules in England, subject to conditions. A unit used solely for cooling is not covered, so check with the council.

Hot water cylinders

The cylinder size depends on how much hot water the household uses.

Air source heat pumps in St George's Hill

Air-to-water heat pumps heat your hot water through a cylinder. If you have a combi boiler and no cylinder, the survey looks at where one could go. With air-to-air, hot water has to come from something else. We are often asked to deal with working out whether radiators need upsizing and finding a place for the outdoor unit, on air-to-water heat pumps, hot water cylinders and air-to-air heat pumps.

Cottages and older homes near St George's Hill can lose heat faster, so a proper heat loss calculation matters. Sometimes insulating first makes more sense.

AirCon Doctor is an F-Gas certified company and NICEIC approved for electrical work, with MCS certification for heat pumps and Checkatrade membership. Our engineers hold the F-gas qualifications needed to work on refrigerant.

St George's Hill: your questions answered

Will you come out to St George's Hill?

Yes, and the size of the place makes no difference to how we work. Visits to smaller places are planned so the engineer arrives with what the job needs.

Is a heat pump in St George's Hill permitted development?

The answer turns on the property and where the outdoor unit would sit. Historic England lists about 3 buildings and structures within half a mile of the centre of St George's Hill. The permitted development rules for heat pumps leave out listed buildings and stop outdoor units going on road-facing walls or roofs in conservation areas. Anything outside the rules needs an application, and we raise it with the local planning authority (for St George's Hill, typically Elmbridge council) first.

Does the grant cover air-to-air heat pumps?

Sometimes, and the amount is £2,500 rather than £7,500. It must replace fossil-fuel heating and meet the full heating demand of a home, installed by an MCS certified installer.

Do you offer emergency call-outs?

Yes. If something urgent happens, like water coming from a unit or a critical room overheating, call our 24/7 line and we will agree what happens next.

How soon will you get back to me?

We reply to enquiries the same working day. If it’s an emergency, ring the 24/7 line instead.

What VAT do I pay on a heat pump?

For homes, currently none: HMRC zero-rates heat pumps installed in residential accommodation until 31 March 2027, and 5% applies after that. The relief isn’t available to businesses, and with air-to-air we confirm the VAT on the quote. This is general information, not tax advice.

Can I do the refrigerant work myself?

Not the refrigerant work. The F-gas rules require certified companies and qualified engineers for it, and a new electrical circuit is notifiable building work unless a registered competent person does it.

What we do, step by step

Anything involving refrigerant is handled by F-Gas qualified engineers, as the law requires, and electrical work is done by us as NICEIC approved contractors. So on the day, you do not need a separate electrician for the electrical side. The work takes several days for an air-to-water system with a new cylinder, less for an air-to-air system. In a place like St George's Hill, parking is rarely an issue, but tell us about gates and access to the back of the property.

  1. We start with your plans and the property.
  2. A survey covers heat loss, radiators, hot water and where the outdoor unit could sit.
  3. You get our view on the right type for the house, and on whether the Boiler Upgrade Scheme applies.
  4. Installation follows on the agreed dates.
  5. After commissioning, you get the MCS certificate and a handover.

How to prepare

  • Mention any roof access, ladders or high-level work
  • Keep pets out of the rooms we are working in
  • Have the make and model of any existing unit to hand

Managing agents and facilities teams in St George's Hill

Larger air conditioning systems in buildings need more than servicing: systems with an effective rated output over 12 kW need a TM44 inspection by an accredited energy assessor at least every 5 years. We arrange the inspection, get the system ready and put right anything it picks up.

If you look after several properties, we can plan visits across the portfolio and price them together. Each property gets its own records, so each one has its own history.
