Air source heat pumps for Postcombe

Air source heat pumps in Postcombe, done properly

An air-to-water heat pump costs £8,000–£16,000 (0% VAT on homes), before the grant. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme can provide £7,500 towards an eligible air-to-water system in England and Wales, and as the installer we apply for it on your behalf. Eligibility depends on the property, so we confirm it before anything is agreed. Common call-outs are for a boiler that’s getting old and working out whether radiators need upsizing, on hot water cylinders, underfloor heating and air-to-water heat pumps.

Older and listed homes in villages like Postcombe need extra care, because permitted development does not apply within the grounds of a listed building, so consent comes first.

Think of the paperwork as the system’s health record: what was fitted or found, what was done and when. It makes the next visit quicker and any warranty question simpler and it’s worth keeping safe.

Postcombe questions

Can I get the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant in Postcombe?

Postcombe is in England, where the Boiler Upgrade Scheme runs. The grant is £7,500 for an air source (air-to-water) heat pump and £2,500 for an air-to-air system that replaces the existing fossil-fuel heating. We hold MCS certification, so the application is ours to make for you.

Do you cover smaller places like Postcombe?

Yes, and the size of the place makes no difference to how we work. Send a few details and pictures, and we reply the same working day.

How much time does a heat pump install need?

A typical installation takes from a couple of days to around a week, depending on the system and how much of the heating changes. We plan the work so you are without heating for as little time as possible and agreed before we start.

Do you offer emergency call-outs?

Yes. Our emergency line runs 24/7 for breakdowns that cannot wait. Ring 07833 053749 any time and explain the problem.

Whose job is it to check the system for leaks?

The operator of the equipment, working with qualified engineers. Larger systems need regular checks: at least every 12 months from 5 tCO2e and every 6 months from 50 tCO2e. We’ll work out which band applies to yours.

Do you survey before quoting?

Yes. For simple jobs, pictures and a few details can be enough, while larger systems and faults that need testing are seen on site.

How soon will you get back to me?

The same working day. After that, we agree a survey, diagnosis or installation date that suits you, and you get a fixed price before any work goes ahead.

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme

Only one grant is available per property, and it can’t replace a low-carbon system, and hybrid systems are not eligible.

Before you call an engineer

There are a few things you can safely do yourself: keep the outdoor unit clear of leaves, plants and clutter, check the settings and the remote, and follow the cleaning the manual describes. Anything inside the units, the electrics and the refrigerant is engineer’s work.

Never try to top up, release or handle refrigerant yourself. The law requires anyone working on equipment containing F gas to hold the right qualifications, and the company to be certified, and escaping refrigerant can cause cold burns. If you suspect a leak, switch the system off and call us.

The process

Our engineers arrive at the time agreed with you and check the plan with you first. Dust sheets go down over floors and anything close to the work, and the electrics are made safe before any panel comes off. On site, it takes several days for an air-to-water system with a new cylinder, less for an air-to-air system. Visits to Postcombe are agreed with you in advance and planned so the job can be finished in one trip where possible.

  1. First, a chat about the property and your goals for the heating.
  2. The survey checks heat loss, emitters, hot water and the outdoor unit position.
  3. You get our view on the right type for the house, and on whether the Boiler Upgrade Scheme applies.
  4. We install the heat pump and connect it up.
  5. We commission it, complete the MCS certificate and show you how to use it.

Preparing for the visit

  • Find the manual or the paperwork for the system, if you have it
  • Arrange for someone to be there to let us in
  • Mention any managing agent or landlord rules we need to follow

Homes in Postcombe and heat pumps

About 75% of households live in detached or semi-detached houses, according to the last census (2021). Houses typically have space for an outdoor unit and a hot water cylinder. About 6 listed entries lie within half a mile of central Postcombe, Elsdale Cottage (grade II) among them. For a heat pump, permitted development does not apply within the grounds of a listed building, and in a conservation area the outdoor unit cannot go on a wall or roof facing a road, so we check with South Oxfordshire council, typically the planning authority here where necessary.

Adwell House, roughly 0.8 miles west, is a reminder to check your home’s listing status: permitted development does not cover listed buildings. Period properties close to Church of St Mary can suit a heat pump, though insulation and any heritage protection are checked first.

Leave it or put it right?

For eligible off-gas homes on oil or LPG, an extra £1,500 is on offer until March 2027. If that applies to you, it’s worth asking about sooner rather than later. Small faults tend to grow, so it’s worth dealing with them early.

The pipe route, the height of the units and how we reach them can all change the price. We take each of them into account and give you a fixed price before we start.
