Air source heat pumps for homes and businesses in Didcot

A heat pump takes heat from the outside air and moves it into your home, using electricity to drive the process. The technology is close to air conditioning, which is why we install both and the Energy Saving Trust notes that air-to-air heat pumps are sometimes referred to as air conditioning. The work covers hot water cylinders, air-to-air heat pumps and radiator systems, and the jobs we see most are questions about where the outdoor unit can go and wanting to stop using oil, LPG or gas for heating.

In a town like Didcot, most heat pump enquiries are for houses heated by a gas boiler. We survey the heat loss, radiators, hot water and the outdoor unit position, then design the system.

AirCon Doctor is an F-Gas certified company and NICEIC approved for electrical work, MCS certified for heat pumps and a Checkatrade member. Refrigerant work is done by engineers who hold the F-gas qualifications the law requires.

Rented and managed buildings

Facilities teams in offices, schools and public buildings book us too across Oxfordshire. Larger buildings can be done in stages around the people who use them.

Bigger systems bring extra duties: a TM44 inspection by an accredited energy assessor is required at least every 5 years for systems over 12 kW. We arrange the inspection, get the system ready and put right anything it picks up.

Didcot: your questions answered

Can I get the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant in Didcot?

Yes, if the home and the heat pump meet the scheme’s rules: Didcot is in England, where it applies. It gives £7,500 towards an air-to-water or ground source heat pump, or £2,500 towards an air-to-air heat pump that replaces the fossil-fuel heating and meets the whole home’s heating need. As an MCS certified installer, we apply for it on your behalf.

Can you do air source heat pumps in Didcot?

Yes. Didcot is one of the places we cover. To start, phone us on 07833 053749, or email if that’s easier with a few pictures.

Do you have a 24/7 line?

Yes, day and night. Call the emergency line and tell us the make, the symptoms and any error code, and we will advise on what to do next.

Do you protect the property while you work?

We put dust sheets over floors and furniture near the work first, and the area is kept tidy throughout. At the end, we clear up and show you what we have done.

What’s the price of a heat pump installation?

Air-to-water systems are £8,000–£16,000 (0% VAT on homes), before any grant. The final price depends on the heat loss survey, the radiators and the cylinder, and you get a fixed-price quote.

Can you set up regular servicing?

Yes. Tell us what you have and how it’s used, and we’ll suggest a schedule with a fixed price. Leak checks required by the F-gas rules can be built in for larger systems.

Will skipping a service affect the warranty?

It depends on the manufacturer’s terms. Some manufacturers make regular servicing by a qualified engineer a condition of the warranty, so it’s worth checking. Either way, keep a record of every service.

Air source heat pumps around Didcot

Census 2021 figures found about 61% of households in detached or semi-detached houses. Houses typically have space for an outdoor unit and a hot water cylinder. The Didcot Old Conservation Area lies close to the centre of Didcot, within about a third of a mile. There are 3 conservation areas within a mile of the centre of Didcot. Listed buildings are part of the picture here: about 16 within half a mile of the centre, such as Church of All Saints (grade II*). For a heat pump, permitted development does not apply within the grounds of a listed building, and in a conservation area the outdoor unit can’t go on a wall or roof facing a road, so we check with South Oxfordshire council, typically the planning authority here where needed.

If your home is listed, like Brightwell Manor about 3.4 miles east, listed building consent comes before any heat pump work. If you live near Didcot Parkway station, the survey compares air-to-water and air-to-air for your home before anything is quoted.

What happens on the day

Where something has to be switched off during the work, we agree it with you first so it does not catch you out. For businesses, we can usually work room by room or zone by zone. On site, it takes from a couple of days to around a week, depending on the system and how much of the heating changes. Most visits to homes in Didcot are booked for a weekday, with businesses fitted around trading.

  1. First, a chat about the property and your goals for the heating.
  2. We survey for heat loss and look at radiators, cylinder space and outdoor unit options.
  3. We explain which type of heat pump suits the home and whether a grant could apply.
  4. The system is installed and connected to the controls.
  5. We commission it, complete the MCS certificate and show you how to use it.

Advice

What owners can safely do

For air conditioning, cleaning the indoor unit’s filters is the main job owners can do where the manufacturer’s manual explains how. With the power off, they lift out, can be vacuumed or rinsed and must be fully dry before they go back. On a heat pump, the equivalent is keeping the outdoor unit clear and checking the controls.

Refrigerant is off limits for anyone without the right qualifications. The law requires anyone working on equipment containing F gas to hold the right qualifications, and the company to be certified, and escaping refrigerant can cause cold burns. If you suspect a leak, switch the system off and call us.

What happens if it’s left?

The extra £1,500 for homes heated by oil or LPG with no mains gas is available until March 2027. For homes that qualify, that is a reason to look into it now. Small faults tend to grow, so it’s worth dealing with them early.

Putting several jobs into one visit can make for a more efficient booking. Mention every unit or room you need covered and we will price it together.
