The process

There’s very little for you to do on the day. Just let us in and point us to the units, or to where they’ll be fitted, and the rest is down to us. Before we leave, the area is tidied and we explain what we have done. Pictures of the space and where the outdoor unit could go let us plan the work in Hoath.

  1. You tell us about the home and what you want from a heat pump.
  2. We survey for heat loss and look at radiators, cylinder space and outdoor unit options.
  3. We recommend air-to-water or air-to-air and check the grant position.
  4. The system is installed and connected to the controls.
  5. We commission it, complete the MCS certificate and show you how to use it.

Before we arrive

  • Name a contact who can meet us at the agreed time
  • Let us know where we can park and unload
  • Tell us about any building rules, permits or sign-in

Advice

Air source heat pumps in Hoath, done properly

Air source heat pumps collect heat from outdoor air and bring it inside with electricity running the compressor and fans. It works on the same principle as air conditioning, run the other way and the Energy Saving Trust notes that air-to-air heat pumps are sometimes referred to as air conditioning. The work covers homes heated by oil, LPG or gas, radiator systems and underfloor heating, and people most often call us about replacing a combi boiler with a heat pump and finding a place for the outdoor unit.

In a place like Hoath, some homes are listed, because permitted development doesn’t apply within the grounds of a listed building, so consent comes first.

We’re an F-Gas certified company, NICEIC approved for electrical work, MCS certified for heat pumps and a Checkatrade member. Our engineers hold the F-gas qualifications needed to work on refrigerant.

Questions from Hoath

Can I get the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant in Hoath?

Hoath is covered, as the scheme runs across England and Wales. The amount depends on the type of heat pump, and the survey confirms which applies. As an MCS certified installer, we apply for it on your behalf.

Is Hoath within the area you cover?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. Visits to smaller places are planned so the engineer arrives with what the job needs.

How quickly will you reply?

We reply to enquiries the same working day. For a breakdown that cannot wait, call our 24/7 emergency line.

Why does F-Gas certification matter?

Certification shows a business is approved to work on systems that hold F gas refrigerant. In Great Britain, that certification is a legal requirement, not an optional extra, and AirCon Doctor is certified.

Is there a survey before the work?

Yes. We always look before we price, either on a site survey or from pictures and details for simple jobs. A fixed-price quote follows.

Do you provide F-Gas records?

Yes. You get a written record of every visit, including F-Gas records for any refrigerant work. Keep them with the manual and the warranty documents.

Who is responsible for leak checks?

Whoever operates the equipment, together with the technicians who service it. Systems below 5 tCO2e fall outside the set leak check intervals, while larger ones need checks at least every 12 months, or every 6 months from 50 tCO2e. We can tell you which band your system falls into.

Different systems, different jobs

Air-to-water heat pumps

The price for air-to-water is £8,000–£16,000 (0% VAT on homes), before the grant. Eligible homes in England and Wales can get a £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant towards it, and we apply for it as the installer.

Air-to-air heat pumps

A £2,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant is available for air-to-air only if it replaces the fossil-fuel heating and meets the full heating demand. It also has to be fitted by an MCS certified installer, in a home.

Looking after it afterwards

Aftercare is straightforward, and it makes the next visit easier:

  • Find out the grant position at the survey
  • Check what your manufacturer’s warranty asks of you
  • Diary the next service

We show you how to use the controls and explain how a heat pump works differently from a boiler. Heat pumps tend to work best running steadily rather than in short bursts, and we will explain the settings for your home.

Have the system serviced regularly. Check the manufacturer’s terms, as they may include servicing conditions.

Homes in Hoath and heat pumps

At about 3 miles from the coast, Hoath is close enough for sea air to matter. Coastal sites are worth mentioning at the survey, as salt air affects the outdoor unit and its fixings. About 76% of households live in detached or semi-detached houses, according to the 2021 Census. Houses usually have space for an outdoor unit and a hot water cylinder. Hoath’s centre is no more than about a third of a mile from the Hoath, Rushbourne and Tile Lodge Conservation Area. In the mile around Hoath’s centre, 2 conservation areas have been designated. About 10 listed entries lie within half a mile of central Hoath, Hoath Court (grade II) among them. That affects heat pumps: listed buildings need consent, and conservation areas limit where the outdoor unit can go under permitted development. Where needed, we check with the local planning authority (normally Canterbury City council).

Older homes near Church of the Holy Cross may need extra checks for planning and heat loss before a heat pump is designed. Every heat pump design starts with a room-by-room heat loss calculation.

When something else is needed

In fairness, some problems need a different answer:

  • Draught-proofing and insulation upgrades
  • Planning decisions, which rest with the council
  • Gas boiler work, such as disconnecting the old boiler, which needs a Gas Safe registered engineer

If you are not sure, just give us a ring on 07833 053749, or email if that’s easier and we will give you a straight answer before you book.
