FAQs for Margate
Does sea air affect air conditioning in Margate?
It can. Margate is within about 1 mile of the coast, and salt air speeds up corrosion on outdoor units. We site outdoor units out of the worst of the sea wind where possible and can suggest models with corrosion protection where the manufacturer offers it.
Is the heat pump grant available in Margate?
Yes, the scheme covers homes in England, including Margate, if they qualify. Air-to-water and ground source systems attract £7,500. Air-to-air gets £2,500, but only where it takes over from fossil-fuel heating and covers the whole home’s heating demand. The installer applies, and we’re MCS certified.
How long will it take to install a heat pump?
A typical installation takes several days for an air-to-water system with a new cylinder, less for an air-to-air system. We plan the work so you’re without heating for as little time as possible and agreed before work begins.
Do you work on systems someone else installed?
Yes. We start with a proper look and tell you honestly what we find, including any issues with how it was fitted. You get a fixed price before any work goes ahead.
Do you work on all makes?
We work with the leading brands, from Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin and Fujitsu to Panasonic, Toshiba, LG, Samsung, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Hitachi. Send us the make and model if you have it.
Do I need planning permission for a heat pump?
Many installations on houses in England fall under permitted development, subject to the rules. Listed buildings and their curtilages are excluded, and listed building consent is a separate matter. We check what applies to you.
How do you keep the place clean during the work?
Protection goes down first: dust sheets over floors and anything close to the work. Holes and fixings are agreed with you, and we clean up afterwards when we finish.
Air source heat pumps for homes and businesses in Margate
An air-to-water heat pump heats water to a lower temperature than a typical boiler which means some radiators may need upsizing. The survey shows which rooms are fine and which need changes and anything that needs changing is in the quote. Typical jobs include checking eligibility for a heat pump grant and wanting to stop using oil, LPG or gas for heating, on air-to-water heat pumps, hot water cylinders and radiator systems.
Plenty of older homes in Margate can run on a heat pump, though some need bigger radiators or better insulation first. The heat loss calculation shows what’s needed.
Some manufacturers make regular servicing by a qualified engineer a condition of their warranty. Where yours does, a regular service with us keeps that side in order and each visit is recorded.
The process
Anything involving refrigerant is handled by F-Gas qualified engineers, as the law requires, and electrical work is done by us as NICEIC approved contractors. On the day, both are in the same hands. On site, it takes several days for an air-to-water system with a new cylinder, less for an air-to-air system. Photos of an existing unit and its label help with repairs and servicing in Margate.
- We talk through your home, your current heating and what you want from a heat pump.
- On the visit we calculate what every room loses on a cold day, then check the radiators, room for a cylinder and outdoor unit options.
- We send a fixed-price quote that shows the equipment, the grant position and the VAT.
- Installation covers the outdoor unit, the indoor connections and the controls.
- Commissioning, MCS certification and a handover of the controls finish the job.
Getting ready for the visit
- Make sure we can reach the outdoor unit, or where it will go
- Let us know where we can park and unload
- Have the make and model of any existing unit to hand
Getting a price
Our prices page gives typical ranges, but your quote is based on your job, because no two buildings, rooms or systems are the same. Once we’ve looked at the job, from photos or on a survey, you get a fixed price. To get going, ring us on 07833 053749 or drop us a line.
Advice
Looking after your system
To keep the system working properly:
- Avoid switching the heat pump on and off often
- Keep to regular servicing
- Look at insulation alongside the heat pump
Should you have questions after the install, phone 07833 053749 or send an email and we will talk it through. Annual servicing helps keep the system working well.
Leave space around the outdoor unit. Airflow is what it runs on, so keep it clear all year.

Leave it or put it right?
For eligible off-gas homes on oil or LPG, an extra £1,500 is on offer until March 2027. If that applies to you, it’s worth asking about sooner rather than later. A system that is left with a fault, or without a service, normally costs more to run.
One room or a whole building, the quote is built the same way: the work involved, the access and the equipment. The price is fixed before work begins, and the quote sets out the VAT.

What else we do in Margate
Heat pumps in Margate: local notes
The coast is only about 1 mile from Margate. Near the coast, we choose the outdoor unit position with salt-laden wind in mind. The Margate Conservation Area lies close to the centre of Margate, within about a third of a mile. In the mile around Margate’s centre, 8 conservation areas have been designated. Listed buildings are part of the picture here: about 82 within half a mile of the centre, such as Parish Church of St John the Baptist (grade I). Where a home is affected, the outdoor unit position is settled with the planning team at Thanet council, which normally handles Margate before the heat pump design is finished. The Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures put about 60% of homes in the Margate area before 1919, and the last census (2021) found about 51% of households live in flats. Older homes can lose heat faster, so a room-by-room heat loss calculation, and sometimes insulation or larger radiators, comes before sizing a heat pump. Flats are often harder for air-to-water systems, so we look at whether air-to-air suits better.
With Quex Park about 2.9 miles west, it’s worth asking whether your own home is listed before planning a heat pump. If your home is one of the older properties near Parish Church of St John the Baptist, the survey checks whether it’s listed or in a conservation area before the outdoor unit position is chosen.
