Air source heat pumps for Westgate-on-Sea

Homes in Westgate-on-Sea and heat pumps

At about 1 mile from the coast, Westgate-on-Sea is close enough for sea air to matter. Coastal sites are worth mentioning at the survey, as salt air affects the outdoor unit and its fixings. The middle of Westgate-on-Sea is part of the Westgate-on-Sea Conservation Area. Draw a one-mile circle round the middle of Westgate-on-Sea and it takes in 3 conservation areas. On the National Heritage List, around 13 entries fall within 0.5 miles of the middle of Westgate-on-Sea; Church of St Saviour (grade II) is one. That affects heat pumps: listed buildings need consent, and conservation areas limit where the outdoor unit can go under permitted development. Where necessary, we check with the planning team at Thanet council, which usually handles Westgate-on-Sea.

For a home near Westgate-On-Sea station, the survey looks at whether an air-to-water or air-to-air heat pump suits better. Period properties close to Church of St Saviour can suit a heat pump, though insulation and any heritage protection are checked first.

Air source heat pumps in Westgate-on-Sea, done properly

A heat pump takes heat from the outside air and moves it into your home, using electricity to drive the process. The technology is close to air conditioning, which is why we install both and the Energy Saving Trust notes that air-to-air heat pumps are sometimes referred to as air conditioning. If you’re dealing with questions about listed buildings or conservation areas and working out whether radiators need upsizing, we can sort it out.

Whether a home near Westgate-on-Sea has mains gas makes a difference to the grant. Homes heated by oil or LPG with no mains gas can get an extra £1,500 on the Boiler Upgrade Scheme until March 2027, for an air source or ground source heat pump.

AirCon Doctor is an F-Gas certified company and NICEIC approved for electrical work, with MCS certification for heat pumps and Checkatrade membership. Our engineers hold the F-gas qualifications needed to work on refrigerant.

When it’s something else

In fairness, some problems need a different answer:

  • A grant for a home that doesn’t meet the scheme rules
  • Improving the building’s insulation
  • Planning approval where permitted development does not apply

If in doubt, ring us on 07833 053749 or fill in the contact form and we’ll say what we think.

What the work covers

  • Homes heated by oil, LPG or gas
  • Radiator systems
  • Underfloor heating
  • Air-to-air heat pumps
  • Hot water cylinders
  • Air-to-water heat pumps

What the work involves, system by system

Radiators and underfloor heating

Any radiator changes are set out in the quote, so you know the full scope.

Air-to-air heat pumps

Since 2025, air-to-air heat pumps can also be permitted development in England, subject to the conditions. Cooling-only units are not included and need a check with the council.

Safe owner checks

Owner care supports servicing; it doesn’t replace it. Simple care keeps the air moving through the system, but the refrigerant circuit, the electrics and the parts you cannot see still need an engineer at the interval the manufacturer recommends.

Refrigerant is off limits for anyone without the right qualifications. Under the F-gas rules, engineers need their own qualifications and the company must be certified, and refrigerant lines can cause cold burns. If you suspect a leak, switch the system off and call us.

What we do, step by step

Wherever the system can be run before we leave, we run it and check it in operation. Then we show you what we’ve done and answer any questions, and anything that needs attention later is pointed out. The visit takes anything from a couple of days for air-to-air to the best part of a week for air-to-water with radiator changes. Send pictures of the space and the outside wall, and we can plan the work near Westgate-on-Sea.

  1. We find out about your home and the heating you have now.
  2. Every room’s heat loss is worked out on site.
  3. The design covers the heat pump, emitters, hot water and outdoor unit.
  4. A fixed-price quote explains the cost, the grant position and the VAT.
  5. Installation, commissioning and MCS registration complete the job.

How to prepare

  • Tell us about parking and loading
  • Move furniture away from the wall where we’ll be working

Westgate-on-Sea questions

Is the heat pump grant available in Westgate-on-Sea?

Westgate-on-Sea is covered, as the scheme runs across England and Wales. Whether your home qualifies, and for how much, depends on the type of heat pump and the heating it replaces. You do not apply yourself: the MCS certified installer does, which is us.

Is the coast a problem for outdoor units in Westgate-on-Sea?

It can. Westgate-on-Sea is within about 1 mile of the coast, and salt air speeds up corrosion on outdoor units. We site outdoor units out of the worst of the sea wind where possible and can suggest models with corrosion protection where the manufacturer offers it.

What warranty do I get?

Warranty is the manufacturer’s own, on its terms. Terms differ by brand, and we set them out on your quote.

How much time does a heat pump install need?

As a guide, it takes from a couple of days to around a week, depending on the system and how much of the heating changes. The programme is planned to keep time without heating short and agreed before we start.

Will my radiators work with a heat pump?

Some radiators may be fine as they are, and some may need to be larger. Heat pumps run at lower flow temperatures, so radiators give out less heat, and the survey checks each one.

Does servicing affect my warranty?

Each manufacturer decides. If servicing is in the terms, missing one could affect a claim and we will tell you what your brand asks for.

Can I fit air conditioning or a heat pump myself?

Not the refrigerant work. Under the F-gas rules, it must be done by qualified engineers from a certified company, and a new electrical circuit is notifiable building work unless a registered competent person does it.
