Air source heat pumps across Ramsgate

Air source heat pumps in Ramsgate, done properly

Installing an air source heat pump in a home is zero-rated for VAT until 31 March 2027, then 5%. That follows HMRC Notice 708/6, and it doesn’t apply to businesses. For air-to-air systems, we confirm the VAT on your quote. This is general information, not tax advice. The work covers homes heated by oil, LPG or gas, radiator systems and air-to-water heat pumps, and the jobs we see most are comparing heat pump types and questions about where the outdoor unit can go.

Houses in Ramsgate normally have room for an outdoor unit at the side or rear, and the position has to pass the MCS planning standard’s noise check to count as permitted development.

Equipment warranty comes from the manufacturer, on its own terms, and we explain those terms on your quote. Each brand sets its own conditions, so we go through them with you rather than leave you to find the small print.

How it works

Anything involving refrigerant is handled by F-Gas qualified engineers, as the law requires, and electrical work is done by us as NICEIC approved contractors. On the day, both are in the same hands. The work takes anything from a couple of days for air-to-air to the best part of a week for air-to-water with radiator changes. The more we can see first, the quicker the visit to Ramsgate.

  1. It starts with a conversation about the home, the existing heating and your plans.
  2. On the visit we calculate what every room loses on a cold day, then check the radiators, room for a cylinder and outdoor unit options.
  3. You get a fixed-price quote, with any grant you’re eligible for and the VAT explained.
  4. Installation covers the outdoor unit, the indoor connections and the controls.
  5. Commissioning, MCS certification and a handover of the controls finish the job.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Clear the space around the indoor unit, or where it will go
  • Make sure we can reach the outdoor unit, or where it will go
  • Plan for pets to be kept clear during the visit

Photos are enough for some jobs; others need a visit first. Bigger systems, commercial sites and awkward pipe routes are normally surveyed on site. Either way, the quote is fixed before anything goes ahead.

Advice

Homes in Ramsgate and heat pumps

Ramsgate lies within about 1 mile of the sea. Salt air is hard on outdoor units, so a heat pump near the sea needs a sensible position and regular checks, and some models offer corrosion protection for coastal sites. Valuation Office Agency council tax records put about 54% of homes in and around Ramsgate before 1919, and about 35% of households live in terraced houses, according to the last census (2021). Period properties can still suit a heat pump, but the design has to start from accurate heat loss figures. Shared walls keep a terrace’s heat loss down, while gardens next door make the noise check on the outdoor unit important.

Older homes near St. Luke's Church may need extra checks for planning and heat loss before a heat pump is designed. Historic houses such as Quex Park, about 4.4 miles north-west, are a reminder that listed homes need consent before a heat pump goes in.

Ramsgate is in Kent. We cover Ramsgate for air source heat pumps, along with the rest of Kent. Ramsgate is one of 922 towns, villages and districts in Kent we cover. Bromley, roughly 60 miles off, has its own page on this site.

That includes properties on High Street, Church Road and High Street St Lawrence and the roads around them. Getting to Ramsgate is easy by the A254 and A255. We also cover the places around Ramsgate: St Lawrence (1 mile west), Northwood (1 mile north-west), Upton (1 mile north-east), Broadstairs (2 miles north-east) and St Peter's (2 miles north). Larger places within reach include Canterbury (15 miles west), Margate (3 miles north), Dover (15 miles south) and Deal (8 miles south).

Around Ramsgate

Typical jobs here are in properties near The Derby Arms, Chatham House Grammar School and St George's Boys School. There’s a railway station in Ramsgate itself: Ramsgate station. Well-known places in the area include Westwood Cross (1.6 miles north-west) and Ramsgate Museum (within half a mile south-east). Open spaces near Ramsgate include Sandwich and Pegwell Bay.

Before you call an engineer

There are a few things you can safely do yourself: keeping the outdoor unit clear, checking the mode and set temperature, and the routine cleaning in the manual. Opening up the units, the electrics and the refrigerant circuit are a job for us.

For air conditioning, cleaning the indoor unit’s filters is the main job owners can do, if the manual says so. They come out, get a gentle clean and go back only when they’re dry. On a heat pump, the equivalent is keeping the outdoor unit clear and checking the controls.

What air conditioning won’t do

Some problems need a different service or another trade:

  • Draught-proofing and insulation upgrades
  • Getting planning permission or listed building consent on your behalf
  • Tax rulings, which only HMRC can give

If in doubt, ring us on 07833 053749 or fill in the contact form and we’ll say what we think before booking.

What we work on in Ramsgate

  • Underfloor heating
  • Air-to-water heat pumps
  • Homes heated by oil, LPG or gas
  • Air-to-air heat pumps
  • Radiator systems
  • Hot water cylinders

Landlords, agents and facilities managers

Facilities teams in offices, schools and public buildings book us too in Ramsgate and across Kent. Larger buildings can be done in stages to keep disruption down.

Portfolio owners often want one contractor and one number. We work across London and the South East, so a run of properties can go into one programme and kept to a regular schedule.

Ramsgate questions

Does sea air affect air conditioning in Ramsgate?

It can. Ramsgate is within about 1 mile of the coast, and salt air speeds up corrosion on outdoor units. The outdoor unit position, its fixings and regular servicing all help near the sea.

Can I fit a heat pump in Ramsgate without planning permission?

There’s no single answer: the building and the outdoor unit position decide it. There’s a conservation area, the Ramsgate Conservation Area, close to central Ramsgate. The permitted development rules for heat pumps leave out listed buildings and stop outdoor units going on road-facing walls or roofs in conservation areas. Anything outside the rules needs an application, and we raise it with the local planning authority (for Ramsgate, usually Thanet council) first.

How long does a heat pump installation take?

The work takes from a couple of days to around a week, depending on the system and how much of the heating changes. The survey lets us set a firm programme, so ring us on 07833 053749 or drop us a line to arrange one.

Do I need to service the system to keep the warranty?

Each manufacturer decides. If servicing is in the terms, missing one could affect a claim, so we explain the terms on your quote.

Do you protect the property while you work?

Protection goes down first: dust sheets over floors and anything close to the work. Any drilling is agreed with you first, and we clear up the dust and offcuts before we leave.

What VAT do I pay on a heat pump?

For homes, currently none: HMRC zero-rates heat pumps installed in residential accommodation until 31 March 2027, and 5% applies after that. Businesses and hotels pay the standard rate, and for air-to-air systems we confirm the VAT on your quote. This is general information, not tax advice.

How does the warranty work?

It’s the manufacturer’s warranty, which varies by brand. Daikin, for instance, gives a standard 2 years on split air conditioning, and we explain the terms for whichever brand you choose.

What a customer said

“Excellent service from start to finish. Two wall-mounted units installed in our home. Clean, tidy work: they protected all the floors and left no mess. The systems work brilliantly. Would highly recommend.”
