Air source heat pumps for homes and businesses in Hale
As an MCS certified installer, we fit air source heat pumps for homes in Hale and the rest of Medway. There are two kinds: air-to-water, which heats radiators or underfloor heating and your hot water, and air-to-air, which warms rooms through indoor units and can also cool. We’ll explain which type fits your home and why. We are often asked to deal with working out where a cylinder could go and ageing boilers that will need replacing, across hot water cylinders, homes heated by oil, LPG or gas and underfloor heating.
Older and listed homes in villages like Hale need extra care, because permitted development does not apply within the grounds of a listed building, so we check consent first.
Whatever the visit, you get a written record: commissioning details and F-Gas records for a new system, a note of the fault and the fix for a repair, or a service record. Keep it with the system’s paperwork so it’s to hand next time.

What you can do yourself, and what needs us
For air conditioning, cleaning the indoor unit’s filters is the main job owners can do where the manufacturer’s manual explains how. With the power off, they lift out, can be vacuumed or rinsed and must be fully dry before they go back. On a heat pump, the equivalent is keeping the outdoor unit clear and checking the controls.
Refrigerant is off limits for anyone without the right qualifications. The law requires anyone working on equipment containing F gas to hold the right qualifications, and the company to be certified, and refrigerant lines can cause cold burns. If you suspect a leak, switch the system off and call us.
What we’re called out for in Hale
A common reason is wanting to stop burning gas, oil or LPG. With a heat pump, the heat comes from the air outside and the system runs on electricity, which is why it fits that aim.
Customers normally contact us when they notice one of these:
- Plans to switch to electric heating with a heat pump
- Comparing heat pump types
- Checking eligibility for a heat pump grant
With Restoration House about 2.7 miles north-west, it’s worth asking whether your own home is listed before planning a heat pump.
What to look for in a quote
- Which brand and model they’re proposing, and why
- What paperwork you will receive afterwards
- Whose warranty applies, and on what terms
Different systems, different jobs
Radiators and underfloor heating
Heat pumps run at lower flow temperatures, so radiators may need to be larger, and the survey checks each one.
Air-to-water heat pumps
Air-to-water systems take heat from the air and put it into your central heating and hot water. It takes over from the boiler, and is MCS certified when we install it.
What a heat pump looks like in Hale
Hale lies within about 3 miles of the sea. Salt air is hard on outdoor units, so a heat pump near the sea needs a sensible position and regular checks, and some models offer corrosion protection for coastal sites. Valuation Office Agency council tax records show about 47% of homes in Hale and the neighbourhoods around it date from 1919 to 1939, and the 2021 Census found about 44% of households in terraced houses. Homes of that age often have cavity walls that may or may not be insulated, which the survey checks. Shared walls keep a terrace’s heat loss down, while gardens next door make the noise check on the outdoor unit important.
Period properties close to Christ Church can suit a heat pump, though insulation and any heritage protection are checked first.

The process
On the day, we arrive at the time agreed with you and run through the plan before anything else. Floors and furniture near the work are covered with dust sheets, and anything electrical is made safe before work starts. The work itself takes from a couple of days to around a week, depending on the system and how much of the heating changes. Photos of the existing unit help with repairs and servicing in Hale.
- First we talk through the property and the current system.
- We measure heat loss for every room.
- From those figures we size the heat pump and decide on radiators, cylinder and outdoor position.
- You get a fixed price, with any grant and the VAT set out.
- Installation, commissioning and MCS registration complete the job.
Before we arrive
- Make sure someone can let us in at the agreed time
- Make sure we can reach the consumer unit or fuse board
- Let us know if the units are on a roof, a high wall or in a locked area
How to get a quote
Quotes don’t take long. Call or email with a few details and we will come back to you the same working day. If we need to see the property first, we book a survey at a time that works for you.

Common questions in Hale
Can I get the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant in Hale?
Hale is covered, as the scheme runs across England and Wales. The grant is £7,500 for an air source (air-to-water) heat pump and £2,500 for an air-to-air system that replaces the existing fossil-fuel heating. The installer applies, and we’re MCS certified.
Does being near the sea make a difference to air source heat pumps in Hale?
It can. Hale is within about 3 miles of the coast, and salt air speeds up corrosion on outdoor units. The outdoor unit position, its fixings and regular servicing all help near the sea.
Do you work on systems someone else installed?
Yes. We work on systems fitted by other installers as well as our own, on all the main brands. Send us the make and model, and any records you have.
Will you make a mess?
Protection goes down first: dust sheets over floors and anything close to the work. Any drilling is agreed with you first, and we clear up the dust and offcuts when we finish.
Is a heat pump permitted development?
Often not in England, as many heat pumps on houses are permitted development, if the conditions are met. The outdoor unit must be 1.5 m³ or less, comply with MCS 020(a), not be cooling-only and not be within a listed building’s curtilage.
How much does an air source heat pump cost?
For air-to-water, it’s £8,000–£16,000 (0% VAT on homes) before any Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant. Air-to-air systems are priced after a survey, with the VAT confirmed on your quote.
Why use an F-Gas certified company?
For refrigerant work, both the engineer and the company need the right F-gas credentials. Ask to see proof before booking anyone and we will gladly show you ours.
