Keeping the system healthy

Looking after the system is mostly common sense. A few tips:

  • Clear leaves and debris from the outdoor unit
  • Read the manufacturer’s warranty terms for your brand
  • File the MCS certificate safely

If you were eligible for a grant, we handle the application and keep you updated since the grant goes through the installer.

Keep the outdoor unit clear of leaves, plants and stored items. It needs good airflow to collect heat from outside, so keep it clear all year.

About our air source heat pumps in Flemings

Air-to-water heat pumps heat your hot water through a cylinder. Homes with a combi boiler may not have a cylinder, so finding space for one is part of the survey. Air-to-air systems do not heat hot water, so you will need another way to do that. We’re often asked to deal with working out where a cylinder could go and a boiler that’s getting old, on radiator systems, air-to-air heat pumps and hot water cylinders.

Space for an outdoor unit is rarely an issue near Flemings, so the design focuses on heat loss and radiators.

For a fault on a system that may still be under warranty, send us the make, model and installation date. We will tell you how the manufacturer’s warranty is likely to apply before any chargeable work goes ahead.

Flemings questions

Do I need planning permission for a heat pump in Flemings?

It comes down to the building and the spot chosen for the outdoor unit. Central Flemings sits inside a conservation area. A heat pump on a house can be permitted development if it meets the conditions, including the MCS noise check, but not within the grounds of a listed building, and in a conservation area the outdoor unit can’t face a road. Where necessary, we check with Dover council, which is usually the planning authority for Flemings.

Can I get the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant in Flemings?

Flemings is in England, where the Boiler Upgrade Scheme runs. Whether your home qualifies, and for how much, depends on the type of heat pump and the heating it replaces. As an MCS certified installer, we apply for it on your behalf.

Can I do the refrigerant work myself?

The refrigerant side has to be done by a qualified engineer working for an F-Gas certified company. That is the law, not just our preference, and it also matters for the manufacturer’s warranty. We are happy to quote for the full job, supply to commissioning.

Will you work on another installer’s system?

Yes. We look at it first and tell you what we find, including any issues with how it was fitted. You get a fixed price before any work goes ahead.

Do you cover Flemings?

Yes. We work across Greater London, Surrey, Kent, East and West Sussex, Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Hertfordshire and Essex, Flemings included.

What warranty do I get?

Warranty comes from the manufacturer and depends on the brand and product. Daikin, for example, gives a standard 2 years on split air conditioning, and we explain the terms for whichever brand you choose.

Do you work for landlords and businesses?

Yes. From a single let flat to offices, shops and public buildings, the approach is the same: survey or diagnosis, a fixed price and proper paperwork.

The process

Testing is the last part of the visit wherever the system can be switched on. Then we explain what was done and answer your questions, and anything that needs a follow-up is pointed out there and then. All told, the work takes a few days for most air-to-water installations, with air-to-air systems often quicker. If a lane or gateway near Flemings is tight for a van, let us know and we’ll plan for it.

  1. It begins with your house and the heating it relies on now.
  2. A heat loss survey is carried out, room by room.
  3. The design covers the heat pump, emitters, hot water and outdoor unit.
  4. You get a fixed price, with any grant and the VAT set out.
  5. Then it’s fitted, commissioned and registered with MCS.

Before we arrive

  • Let us know if the building has a permit or sign-in process
  • Let us know if the units are on a roof, a high wall or in a locked area
  • Find the manual or the paperwork for the system, if you have it

Getting a quote

Photos are the fastest route to a quote: the room or the existing unit, the outside wall or roof where the outdoor unit sits or would go, and the label on any existing unit. Add the address and what you’d like done, and simple jobs can often be priced without a visit.

Homes in Flemings and heat pumps

About 37% of homes in and around Flemings were built before 1919, according to the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures, and about 78% of households live in detached or semi-detached houses, according to the 2021 Census. In older homes, the heat loss calculation is especially important, as solid walls and draughts change the size of heat pump needed. Houses normally have space for an outdoor unit and a hot water cylinder.

Live in one of the older houses around Church of St Nicholas? Expect the survey to look closely at heat loss and at the building’s planning status.

When to call us in Flemings

Extensions, renovations and loft conversions are a natural time to rethink the heating. It’s simpler to plan radiators, pipework and a cylinder while the builders are in.

Keep an eye out for these signs:

  • No space for a hot water cylinder
  • A boiler that is getting old
  • Checking emitters for a heat pump

Goodnestone Park lies about 2.7 miles south-west. Owners of listed homes need consent before a heat pump is fitted, so it’s one of our first questions.

What to look for in a quote

  • Exactly what the price includes, from supply and fitting to commissioning
  • Whether the electrical work is done by a registered contractor, such as NICEIC approved
  • Proof of F-Gas company certification
