Air source heat pumps for homes and businesses in East Street
Air-to-air heat pumps can qualify for a £2,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, but only in some cases. It has to replace the fossil-fuel heating, cover the whole heating demand, be fitted by an MCS certified installer and be in a home, so an add-on next to a boiler is not eligible. The work covers air-to-water heat pumps, radiator systems and air-to-air heat pumps, and people most often call us about planning and permitted development questions and a boiler that’s getting old.
For a home around East Street that’s off mains gas and heated by oil or LPG, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme adds an extra £1,500 until March 2027 for an air source or ground source heat pump, on top of the £7,500.
AirCon Doctor is an F-Gas certified company and NICEIC approved for electrical work, MCS certified for heat pumps and a Checkatrade member. Our engineers hold the F-gas qualifications needed to work on refrigerant.

What happens on the day
Testing is the last part of the visit wherever the system can be switched on. Then we explain what was done and answer your questions, and anything that needs a follow-up is pointed out there and then. All told, the work takes a few days for most air-to-water installations, with air-to-air systems often quicker. If a lane or gateway near East Street is tight for a van, let us know and we will plan for it.
- We find out about your home and the heating you have now.
- We measure heat loss for every room.
- The design covers the heat pump, emitters, hot water and outdoor unit.
- A fixed-price quote explains the cost, the grant position and the VAT.
- We install, commission and register the system under MCS.
Before we arrive
- Let us know where the consumer unit is
- Dig out any previous service or F-Gas records
- Let us know if the building has a permit or sign-in process

Advice
What affects the cost of air source heat pumps
Jobs vary more than people expect. The main factors:
- A single visit or a regular plan
- How easy the units are to reach
- The size of the job
The cost depends on the system and the number of rooms or units, how easy the units are to reach and the parts and time the job needs. We give you a fixed price before any work starts, so you know where you stand.
Asking for a quote
Good photos often save a visit. Try to include:
- The outdoor side of the property, including any roof or flat area
- Any error code or flashing light on the display
- A photo of the consumer unit with the cover closed
Getting a quote is straightforward. Send a few details and pictures, and we reply the same working day. Where a survey is needed, we arrange a time that suits you.
Signs you need air source heat pumps in East Street
Many enquiries start with a question about the Boiler Upgrade Scheme. Eligibility depends on the property, the system and the scheme rules and we confirm it before you go ahead.
Any of these is worth a proper look:
- Plans to switch to electric heating with a heat pump
- Working out whether radiators need upsizing
- Finding a place for the outdoor unit
Goodnestone Park, roughly 4.3 miles south-west, is a reminder to check your home’s listing status: permitted development does not cover listed buildings.
What your quote should include
- Whether a new circuit is included and who certifies it
- What’s in the price and what isn’t
- What the manufacturer’s warranty covers and for how long

What else we do in East Street
Common questions in East Street
Will a heat pump in East Street need planning permission?
The answer turns on the property and where the outdoor unit would sit. A conservation area takes in the middle of East Street. The permitted development rules for heat pumps leave out listed buildings and stop outdoor units going on road-facing walls or roofs in conservation areas. Anything outside the rules needs an application, and we raise it with the local planning authority (for East Street, typically Dover council) first.
Do you cover smaller places like East Street?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We are based in East Grinstead and plan each visit so the job can be finished in one trip where possible.
Should I choose air-to-water or air-to-air?
Air-to-water heats radiators or underfloor heating and hot water; air-to-air heats rooms through indoor units and can cool them. With air-to-air, hot water needs another source and the survey helps decide.
Are my radiators big enough for a heat pump?
The heat loss survey answers that, room by room. Where a radiator is already large enough, it stays and any changes are in the quote.
What VAT do I pay on a heat pump?
Not on a home installation at the moment: until 31 March 2027 the rate is 0% in residential accommodation, then 5%. The relief isn’t available to businesses, and for air-to-air systems we confirm the VAT on your quote. This is general information, not tax advice.
Whose job is it to check the system for leaks?
The F-gas rules share it between the equipment’s operator and the engineers who work on it. How often depends on the size of the refrigerant charge in tonnes of CO2 equivalent: at least every 12 months from 5 tCO2e, and every 6 months from 50 tCO2e.
Can I do the refrigerant work myself?
Not the refrigerant work. Under the F-gas rules, it must be done by qualified engineers from a certified company, and a new electrical circuit is notifiable building work unless a registered competent person does it.
What a heat pump looks like in East Street
The last census (2021) found about 66% of households in detached or semi-detached houses. Detached and semi-detached houses normally have room for the outdoor unit and a cylinder.
Period properties close to Church of St Nicholas can suit a heat pump, though insulation and any heritage protection are checked first.
