Air source heat pumps for Cliffe

Air source heat pumps in Cliffe

Every installation starts with a heat loss survey. That tells us how much heat the home needs, room by room so the system is sized to match. Guesswork leads to systems that are too big or too small. The work covers air-to-water heat pumps, hot water cylinders and homes heated by oil, LPG or gas, and common reasons people get in touch are checking emitters for a heat pump and an oil, LPG or gas boiler near the end of its life.

Older and listed homes in villages like Cliffe need extra care, because permitted development doesn’t apply within the grounds of a listed building, so consent comes first.

Think of the paperwork as the system’s health record: what was fitted or found, what was done and when. It makes the next visit quicker and any warranty question simpler and it’s worth keeping safe.

Heat pumps in Cliffe: local notes

Cliffe lies within about 2 miles of the sea. Salt air is hard on outdoor units, so a heat pump near the sea needs a sensible position and regular checks, and some models offer corrosion protection for coastal sites. Cliffe’s centre is no more than about a third of a mile from the Cliffe Conservation Area. On the National Heritage List, around 17 entries fall within 0.5 miles of the middle of Cliffe; Church of St Helen (grade I) is one. That affects heat pumps: listed buildings need consent, and conservation areas limit where the outdoor unit can go under permitted development. Where necessary, we check with Medway council, normally the planning authority here. The 2021 Census found about 75% of households in detached or semi-detached houses. Houses typically have space for an outdoor unit and a hot water cylinder.

Older homes near Church of St Helen may need extra checks for planning and heat loss before a heat pump is designed. Temple Manor lies about 4.9 miles south. Owners of listed homes need consent before a heat pump is fitted, so it’s one of our first questions.

Landlords, agents and facilities managers

Keeping records across a portfolio is half the battle. Each visit is written up, plus the F-Gas records where refrigerant is involved, ready for a tenant, a buyer or an inspection.

Bigger systems bring extra duties: a TM44 inspection by an accredited energy assessor is required at least every 5 years for systems over 12 kW. We arrange the inspection, get the system ready and put right anything it picks up.

Why act early in Cliffe

A heat pump sized without a proper heat loss survey can struggle in cold weather or run inefficiently. A room-by-room survey gets it right first time. Waiting rarely makes an air conditioning problem smaller.

Typical ranges are on our prices page, but your price depends on the job in front of us. Call for a fixed-price quote, and we’ll explain what it covers.

What happens on the day

The work area is kept tidy throughout, with sheets down and mess cleared as we go. If we need to drill through a wall, we agree the spot with you first. On site, it takes from a couple of days to around a week, depending on the system and how much of the heating changes. We plan the trip to Cliffe around you.

  1. You tell us about the home and what you want from a heat pump.
  2. A survey covers heat loss, radiators, hot water and where the outdoor unit could sit.
  3. We recommend air-to-water or air-to-air and check the grant position.
  4. The system is installed and connected to the controls.
  5. The job ends with commissioning, the MCS certificate and a walk through the controls.

Before we arrive

  • Find the manual or the paperwork for the system, if you have it
  • Let us know if the building has a permit or sign-in process
  • Move furniture away from the wall where we will be working

Questions from Cliffe

Is the coast a problem for outdoor units in Cliffe?

It can. Cliffe is within about 2 miles of the coast, and salt air speeds up corrosion on outdoor units. We site outdoor units out of the worst of the sea wind where possible and can suggest models with corrosion protection where the manufacturer offers it.

Can I get the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant in Cliffe?

Cliffe is in England, where the Boiler Upgrade Scheme runs. The grant is £7,500 for an air source (air-to-water) heat pump and £2,500 for an air-to-air system that replaces the existing fossil-fuel heating. We hold MCS certification, so the application is ours to make for you.

Do you work on commercial properties?

Yes. From a single let flat to offices, shops and public buildings, we work the same way: a look first, a fixed-price quote and written records.

Will my radiators work with a heat pump?

Some radiators may be fine as they are, and some may need to be larger. At the lower temperatures a heat pump uses, radiators need more surface, and the survey checks each one.

How much time does a heat pump install need?

The work takes a few days for most air-to-water installations, with air-to-air systems often quicker. The survey lets us set a firm programme, so ring us on 07833 053749 or send an email to arrange one.

Do I need to service the system to keep the warranty?

Each manufacturer decides. Where servicing is a condition, a missed service could give the manufacturer grounds to refuse a claim and we’ll tell you what your brand asks for.

Can we book visits on a schedule?

Yes. Send details of the systems and how they’re used, and we will suggest a schedule with a fixed price. That can include the leak checks the F-gas rules require for larger systems.

Before you call an engineer

Refrigerant is off limits for anyone without the right qualifications. Under the F-gas rules, engineers need their own qualifications and the company must be certified, and refrigerant lines can cause cold burns. If you suspect a leak, switch the system off and call us.

Don’t move, re-route or disconnect units or pipework yourself. Moving a unit involves the refrigerant circuit, so it needs an F-Gas qualified engineer, and the electrical side needs a competent person. Ask us to quote for a move instead.

What a customer said

“Excellent service from start to finish. Two wall-mounted units installed in our home. Clean, tidy work: they protected all the floors and left no mess. The systems work brilliantly. Would highly recommend.”
