Air source heat pumps near Artington

How we handle air source heat pumps in Artington

Until 31 March 2027, a heat pump installed in residential accommodation carries 0% VAT, with 5% from 1 April 2027. This is HMRC’s energy-saving materials relief, which applies to homes rather than businesses. For air-to-air systems, we confirm the VAT on your quote. Please treat this as general information rather than tax advice. We are often asked to deal with replacing a combi boiler with a heat pump and moving away from fossil-fuel heating, on hot water cylinders, homes heated by oil, LPG or gas and air-to-water heat pumps.

Space for an outdoor unit is rarely an issue near Artington, so the design focuses on heat loss and radiators.

Warranty on the equipment is the manufacturer’s own, on the manufacturer’s terms, and we explain those terms on your quote. Terms differ from brand to brand, and we are happy to talk you through them.

How the visit works

Wherever the system can be run before we leave, we run it and check it in operation. Then we show you what we have done and answer any questions, and anything that needs attention later is pointed out. All told, the work takes a few days on site, depending on the cylinder, the radiators and the pipework involved. Photos of the room and the outside of the property help us plan a visit to Artington.

  1. First we talk through the property and the current system.
  2. We measure heat loss for every room.
  3. From those figures we size the heat pump and decide on radiators, cylinder and outdoor position.
  4. Cost, grant and VAT appear on one fixed-price quote.
  5. Installation, commissioning and MCS registration complete the job.

Before we arrive

  • Make sure we can reach the consumer unit or fuse board
  • Move furniture away from the wall where we will be working
  • Arrange for someone to be there to let us in

Advice

What you can do yourself, and what needs us

Refrigerant is off limits for anyone without the right qualifications. The law requires anyone working on equipment containing F gas to hold the right qualifications, and the company to be certified, and refrigerant lines can cause cold burns. A suspected leak is our job, not yours.

Leave the units and pipework where they are. Moving a unit involves the refrigerant circuit, so it needs an F-Gas qualified engineer, and the electrical side needs a competent person. If you need something moved, we can quote for it.

What air source heat pumps cannot fix

It’s worth knowing the limits before booking:

  • Tax rulings, which only HMRC can give
  • A grant for a home that doesn’t meet the scheme rules
  • Planning decisions, which rest with the council

If you’re not sure, just call us on 07833 053749 or email us and we will give you a straight answer before you book.

Common questions in Artington

Can I get the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant in Artington?

Artington is in England, where the Boiler Upgrade Scheme runs. Whether your home qualifies, and for how much, depends on the type of heat pump and the heating it replaces. We hold MCS certification, so the application is ours to make for you.

Do you cover smaller places like Artington?

Yes. Artington is within the area we cover across London and the South East. We are based in East Grinstead and plan each visit so the job can be finished in one trip where possible.

What’s the difference between air-to-water and air-to-air heat pumps?

Air-to-water feeds your central heating and hot water, while air-to-air warms and cools rooms directly. Air-to-air does not heat hot water, and we explain which suits your home.

Are my radiators big enough for a heat pump?

Some radiators may be fine as they are, and some may need to be larger. At the lower temperatures a heat pump uses, radiators need more surface, and the survey checks each one.

What’s the price of a heat pump installation?

£8,000–£16,000 (0% VAT on homes) for air-to-water, before the grant. Your price depends on the survey, the emitters and the hot water and the quote is fixed.

Are you F-Gas certified?

We hold F-Gas company certification, which the law requires for any business working on refrigerant. We are also NICEIC approved, MCS certified for heat pumps and Checkatrade members.

Can I do the refrigerant work myself?

No, not the refrigerant side. Under the F-gas rules, it must be done by qualified engineers from a certified company, and a new electrical circuit is notifiable building work unless a registered competent person does it.

Different systems, different jobs

Air-to-water heat pumps

An air-to-water heat pump heats water for your radiators or underfloor heating and your hot water cylinder. It replaces the boiler as the main heat source and we install it to MCS standards.

Outdoor unit position and planning

Flats have tighter limits, and an Article 4 direction can remove permitted development rights. Listed buildings also need separate consent and we check what applies to you.

Homes in Artington and heat pumps

Census 2021 figures found about 74% of households in detached or semi-detached houses. Finding room for the outdoor unit and a cylinder is seldom a problem in homes like these. Artington’s centre is no more than about a third of a mile from the St Catherines Guildford Town Centre Conservation Area. There are 5 conservation areas within a mile of the centre of Artington. On the National Heritage List, around 26 entries fall within 0.5 miles of the middle of Artington; Chapel of St Catherine (grade I) is one. Where a home is affected, the outdoor unit position is settled with the planning team at Guildford council, which typically handles Artington before the heat pump design is finished.

If your home is one of the older properties near Church of St Mary the Virgin, the survey checks whether it’s listed or in a conservation area before the outdoor unit position is chosen. If your home is listed, like Guildford Castle about 1.1 miles north, listed building consent comes before any heat pump work.
