Air conditioning installation in Croydon

Croydon has almost every kind of building we work on: Victorian and Edwardian terraces, interwar semis, large suburban houses towards the south of the borough, blocks of flats old and new, and a town centre full of offices and shops. We install, service and repair air conditioning across the borough, from one wall-mounted unit in a bedroom to multi-split systems for a whole home and commercial systems for workplaces.

We’re based in East Grinstead, West Sussex, and we work across Croydon and the rest of south London. We’re an F-Gas certified company, NICEIC approved for electrical work and MCS certified for heat pumps. We fit leading brands such as Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin, Fujitsu, Samsung and LG, and we explain the manufacturer’s warranty for your chosen unit on the quote.

Here’s how it works. We look at the property on a site survey, or from photos for simple jobs. You get a fixed-price quote. We install, repair or service the system, then commission it, record the refrigerant details for your F-Gas records and show you the controls. A single-room split system is typically £1,200–£2,200 + VAT, and three to five rooms £4,500–£8,500 + VAT. Our Croydon cost guide explains what affects the price.

For a system that has stopped working, our repair service covers all makes, with diagnosis from £75 + VAT. For a server room or business that can’t wait, our 24/7 line handles emergency call-outs.

A note on VAT for homes. HMRC’s Notice 708/6 zero-rates the installation of energy-saving materials in homes, including air source heat pumps, until 31 March 2027, and HMRC says most air conditioning units are air source heat pumps. Whether a particular product qualifies depends on the facts, so we confirm the VAT on your quote. Business premises pay the standard rate. This is general information, not tax advice.

Flats, leases and family homes

A lot of Croydon lives in flats, from converted Victorian houses to modern blocks around the town centre and the stations. Flats raise three questions before anything else. Where can the outdoor unit go? How will the pipework reach it? Who has to agree? A balcony or a small rear yard can work well. A flat roof above may be possible if the building allows it. Some newer blocks have rules on fixings to cladding or balconies, and many managing agents want details before they’ll say yes.

That’s where a lease comes in. If you own a leasehold flat, the lease usually controls changes to the outside walls, the roof and shared areas, and most need the landlord’s written consent for an outdoor unit. We can give you the unit specification, the noise figures from the manufacturer, the proposed positions and photos. Our guide to getting leasehold consent explains the process step by step.

Houses in the borough tend to be simpler. In a semi or detached house, a multi-split system can cool several bedrooms from one outdoor unit, often placed on a side wall or at the back of the garden path. In a terrace, a rear extension roof or a back wall is often the neatest spot. Older solid brick walls need core drilling for pipework, which we plan to avoid damage to decoration inside.

Croydon sits within Greater London, and the Greater London Authority’s heat island maps show the city as a whole running warmer than the countryside around it. Bedrooms in loft conversions and top-floor flats feel that most at night. Most split systems also work in heat mode; the Energy Saving Trust notes that air-to-air heat pumps are sometimes referred to as air conditioning, so tell us if you want heating as well as cooling.

Choosing the indoor unit is part of the plan. A wall-mounted split is the usual choice in a bedroom or living room. A floor console suits rooms with low windows or sloping ceilings, and in a loft conversion a slim ducted unit can serve the room through small grilles. We show you the options on the survey and explain the trade-offs in cost, noise and looks.

George Street, Croydon (CR0)

Property
A modern co-working space on the second floor.
Work carried out
Installation of three Daikin cassette units in the main working area and a wall-mounted unit in the private meeting room. The co-working space operates from 7am to 10pm seven days a week, requiring a system that could handle extended operating hours. Installation was completed over a single weekend before a Monday relaunch of the space.
Outcome
Member satisfaction ratings improved immediately following installation. The space operator noted that summer membership cancellations: previously attributed to heat: had effectively ceased in the year following installation.

Planning and conservation in Croydon

Planning in the borough is handled by Croydon Council, which has guides for homeowners making an application. The council says there are 21 conservation areas in Croydon, including Central Croydon, and it publishes a list and directory of conservation areas. Some of them also have Article 4 directions, which remove certain permitted development rights.

For a house, an air source heat pump can be permitted development if it meets set limits on size, position and noise. The Planning Portal’s heat pump guidance sets them out: no more than 1.5 m³ for the outdoor unit, compliance with MCS 020(a), not used solely for cooling, and stricter limits on walls facing a road in conservation areas. Flats have tighter limits. Cooling-only air conditioning isn’t covered by those rights, so it needs the council’s view. Listed buildings need listed building consent as well.

We’ll tell you on the survey which route your job is likely to need and give you the drawings and details the council or your landlord will ask for. The decision stays with them, and we won’t start work until the right consents are in place.

The electrical side is simpler. A new dedicated circuit is notifiable building work under Part P. As the Planning Portal explains, a registered competent person can self-certify it. We’re NICEIC approved, so we do that and hand you the certificate at the end of the job.

Noise matters in a borough with so many close neighbours. If someone complains, the council’s environmental health team can look into it. We site outdoor units with that in mind, use anti-vibration mounts and size the unit so it isn’t working flat out through the night.

Offices, shops and server rooms in Croydon

Croydon’s town centre has a large office market and a busy shopping area, and the borough has plenty of surgeries, schools and local high streets too. We install and maintain commercial air conditioning for all of them: ceiling cassettes in open-plan offices, ducted systems hidden in ceiling voids, and VRF systems for larger buildings. Server and comms rooms need cooling that never stops; our server room page explains how we approach them.

Business systems carry legal duties: leak checks above the F-gas thresholds, refrigerant records, and TM44 inspections for systems over 12 kW. Our maintenance contracts cover the routine work, and our 24/7 line covers breakdowns.

Many Croydon offices are in multi-let buildings managed by agents, with rules on roof plant, risers and contractor access. We agree method statements, risk assessments and timings with building management before work starts. If your floor has an older central system, we can tell you whether it’s worth repairing or whether separate units would serve you better. Older systems on R410A can still be repaired legally; our guide to repair or replace explains how to decide.

For schools and nurseries in the borough, holidays are usually the best time to install, so talk to us well ahead of the summer.

How it works

  1. Diagnose. We look at the rooms or building on a site survey, or from your photos for simple jobs, and work out what size and type of system it needs.
  2. Quote. You get a fixed-price quote with the make and model of every unit, the pipe runs, electrics and condensate route, and the VAT.
  3. Treat. An F-Gas certified engineer installs, repairs or services the system, with any new circuit done by our NICEIC approved electricians.
  4. Sign off. We commission and leak-test the system, keep the F-Gas records, explain the controls and go through the manufacturer’s warranty terms for your brand.

Questions from Croydon

Can you install air conditioning in my Croydon flat?

Usually, yes. We check where the outdoor unit can go, how the pipes will run and whether your lease needs the landlord’s consent, then quote.

Do I need my landlord’s permission?

If you own a leasehold flat, most leases need written consent before an outdoor unit is fixed to the building. We can supply the details your landlord or managing agent will want.

Is planning permission needed in Croydon?

It depends on the property, the unit and its position. Heat pumps on houses can be permitted development within set limits; flats, cooling-only units and some conservation areas need the council’s view.

How much does it cost?

A single-room split system is typically £1,200–£2,200 + VAT, supplied and fitted. You get a fixed-price quote after the survey.

Do you cover the whole borough?

Yes, from Thornton Heath and Norbury to Purley, Coulsdon and New Addington. Send us your postcode.

How soon will you reply?

The same working day. For a breakdown, call our 24/7 line on 07833 053749.
