Our air conditioning service in IG5

Most air conditioning needs its own electrical supply from the consumer unit. Under Part P, a new circuit is notifiable unless a registered competent person does it, and as NICEIC approved contractors we can install and certify it as part of the job. Typical jobs include a business premises that overheats in summer and a portable unit with a hose out of the window, across wall-mounted split systems, VRF systems and air-to-air heat pumps.

Refrigerant work is done by qualified engineers working for an F-Gas certified company, and electrical work is done by us as NICEIC approved contractors. On the day, both are in the same hands. On site, it takes anything from a day for one room to several days for a multi-room or ducted system.

  1. We start by looking at the rooms, the walls and where the outdoor unit can go.
  2. The quote is fixed and shows the equipment, where each unit goes and what’s included.
  3. On the day, we fit the indoor and outdoor units and run the pipework, cable and condensate drain.
  4. Once the electrics are connected, the pipework is tested for leaks and put under vacuum before any refrigerant flows.
  5. Finally, it’s commissioned, tested in each mode and handed over with the F-Gas records.

What you will pay

Height, access and the distance between the indoor and outdoor units all affect the cost. We take each of them into account, and the price is fixed before work begins.

Air conditioning across IG5: local notes

In IG5, as across England, the same permitted development rules apply: an air-to-air system that heats as well as cools can be permitted development on a house, but cooling-only units, listed buildings and outdoor units facing a road in conservation areas need more care.

IG5 is part of a working area that runs from Greater London to the Sussex coast and out to Oxfordshire and Essex. You reach the same people wherever you are in it.

Fairlop: Around St Francis of Assisi, a quick check of the listing and conservation maps is part of planning any install. About 2.1 miles south stands Valentines Mansion. Listed homes in any area need consent first, so tell us if yours is one.

System by system

Ducted systems

A ducted system needs a ceiling void or loft deep enough for the unit and ducts plus an access hatch for maintenance. We check that on the survey before recommending one.

Outdoor unit positions

Noise is part of the decision: away from bedroom windows and neighbours’ windows where possible and fitted so vibration doesn’t carry into the building. It can also affect whether planning permission is needed.

What air conditioning can’t fix

In fairness, there are a few things this work won’t fix:

  • Gas boiler or central heating faults (we do not work on gas boilers)
  • A room that can’t take an outdoor unit or pipe route without the landlord’s, management company’s or council’s consent (that consent comes first)
  • A ventilation problem rather than a temperature problem

Before you call an engineer

Write down what you notice: error codes, noises, drips, smells or a drop in performance. It helps us diagnose quickly, and a photo of the display helps even more.

Leave the units and pipework where they are. Moving a unit involves the refrigerant circuit, so it needs an F-Gas qualified engineer, and the electrics need care too. Ask us to quote for a move instead.

Common problems we fix in IG5

Loft rooms and top floors tend to suffer most. The roof takes the full force of the sun, and warm air rises from the floors below, which is why a loft bedroom can still be warm at bedtime.

Most people get in touch after spotting one of these:

  • Not knowing which system, size or brand to choose
  • Rooms that get too hot to sleep or work in
  • Expensive direct electric heating
  • An ageing air conditioning system near the end of its life

Questions from IG5

How much does air conditioning installation cost?

For one room, a split system is typically £1,200–£2,200 + VAT. A two-room multi-split is typically £2,800–£4,500 + VAT, and three to five rooms £4,500–£8,500 + VAT, including supply, installation, commissioning and F-Gas documentation. You get a fixed price before any work starts.

How does the warranty work?

It’s the manufacturer’s warranty, which varies by brand. Daikin, for example, gives a standard 2 years on split air conditioning, and we explain the terms for whichever brand you choose.

Do you work on commercial properties?

Yes. We work for homeowners, landlords, letting and managing agents, and businesses of every size across London and the South East. Let us know who the records should go to.

Are you F-Gas certified?

As the law requires for refrigerant work, we’re an F-Gas certified company. NICEIC approval, MCS certification for heat pumps and Checkatrade membership sit alongside it.

Do I get paperwork after the visit?

Yes. You get a written record of every visit, and any work on the refrigerant circuit goes in the F-Gas records. File them with the system’s paperwork.

Does servicing affect my warranty?

That depends on the brand. If servicing is in the terms, missing one could affect a claim and we’ll tell you what your brand asks for.

How do you size the system?

Floor area is only part of it. Glazing, orientation, the roof and what goes on in the room all affect it and the survey covers each of them.
