Air conditioning in GU34: how it works
Most modern split systems run as heat pumps, so they can heat as well as cool. The Energy Saving Trust makes the same point: an air-to-air heat pump is what many people simply call air conditioning, and a well-chosen system can earn its keep all year round. The work covers ceiling cassettes, multi-split systems and wall-mounted split systems, and the jobs we see most are bedrooms and offices that overheat in summer and uncertainty over the right type and size of system.
Protection comes first: sheets over the floor and any furniture nearby and nothing is moved without asking you. Then the electrics are made safe and the work begins. The work on site takes anything from a day for one room to several days for a multi-room or ducted system, and we clear up before we go.
- First the diagnosis: a survey of the rooms, the walls, the outside and the electrics.
- Then the prescription: the right system and size for each room, on a fixed-price quote.
- The treatment: units fitted, pipework and drain routed, and the electrics installed.
- Checks: a pressure test for leaks, then a vacuum to clear moisture.
- Finally, the clean bill of health: commissioning, the controls explained and your paperwork handed over.

Alton: With historic houses such as Bentworth Hall about 3.2 miles west, it’s a reminder that older homes nearby may be listed, which changes the planning rules. If you work from home near Alton station, a home office that overheats is one of the easiest rooms to cool.
Different systems, different jobs
Ducted systems
A ducted system needs a ceiling void or loft deep enough for the unit and ducts plus an access hatch for maintenance. We check that on the survey before recommending one.
Ceiling cassettes
Cassettes need space above the ceiling and a route for the condensate, and many use a built-in condensate pump to lift the water away. The survey confirms the void and the drain route.
What you can do yourself, and what needs us
Don’t move, re-route or disconnect units or pipework yourself. Disconnecting a system means dealing with refrigerant, which only a qualified engineer can do, and the electrical side needs a competent person. Ask us to quote for a move instead.
There are a few things you can safely do yourself: keep the outdoor unit clear of leaves, plants and clutter, check the settings and the remote, and follow the cleaning the manual describes. Anything inside the units, the electrics and the refrigerant is engineer’s work.
Fixed-price quotes for air conditioning in GU34
Your quote is based on your property. We consider:
- What kind of system it is
- The brand, model and parts involved
- Whether we need access equipment for high-level work
- The pipe route between the units
Every job is different, so each one gets its own fixed-price quote. The equipment, how we reach it, the route between units and the work needed all make a difference.
Before you get in touch
There’s no need for technical detail. It helps if you can send:
- The rating plate or label on any existing unit
- The address and the type of property
- Wide pictures of the room or the existing unit
- The remote or wall controller showing any error
The quickest way to a quote is to send pictures: the room or the existing unit, the outside wall or roof where the outdoor unit sits or would go, and the label on any existing unit. Add the address and what you’d like done, and many jobs can be priced from that.
Leave it or put it right?
Size matters more than brand. Too small, and it runs flat out without catching up; too big, and it switches on and off and wastes energy. Getting the sizing right at the survey stage avoids both problems.
What your quote should include
- How extra work would be agreed if they find something unexpected
- Whether the electrical work is done by a registered contractor, such as NICEIC approved
- If the quote is based on a survey, pictures or a diagnosis
- Whether the price is fixed or an estimate
GU34 questions
Why does F-Gas certification matter?
Anyone installing, repairing or servicing the refrigerant side must be qualified, and their company certified. Ask to see proof before you book anyone, and we’re happy to show ours.
Will you need to do electrical work?
Most systems need their own supply from the consumer unit. Under Part P, a new circuit has to be notified unless a registered competent person does it, and we are NICEIC approved, so we can install and certify it.
How do I know what size unit to get?
It depends on the room, not only its floor area. Windows, the direction the room faces, the roof above and the people and equipment in it all count and the survey covers each of them.
What accreditations do you have?
We hold F-Gas company certification, which the law requires for any business working on refrigerant. We’re also NICEIC approved, MCS certified for heat pumps and Checkatrade members.
Who is responsible for leak checks?
Responsibility is shared between the operator, typically whoever owns or controls the equipment, and the service technicians. The interval depends on the refrigerant charge, measured in tonnes of CO2 equivalent: at least every 12 months from 5 tCO2e, and every 6 months from 50 tCO2e.
Do you survey before quoting?
Yes. We always look before we price, on a survey, or from your pictures and details where the job is simple. Then you get a fixed-price quote.
Can I do any of the installation myself?
Anything that involves the refrigerant needs an F-Gas qualified engineer from a certified company. That’s the law, not just our preference, and manufacturers expect it for their warranty too. We can quote for the whole job, from supply to commissioning.
