Air source heat pumps in Witley

How we handle air source heat pumps in Witley

Many air source heat pumps can be installed as permitted development in England, without a planning application. Conditions include a maximum outdoor unit size of 1.5 m³, compliance with MCS 020(a), use for more than cooling alone and a site outside the curtilage of a listed building. We check the rules for your property as part of the survey. The work covers underfloor heating, homes heated by oil, LPG or gas and hot water cylinders, and the jobs we see most are ageing boilers that will need replacing and replacing a combi boiler with a heat pump.

Homes around Witley normally have room outside for a heat pump, so the design focuses on heat loss and radiators.

Each manufacturer sets its own warranty period. For example, Daikin’s standard warranty on split air conditioning is 2 years, and its longer extensions apply to its air-to-water units only. Whatever the brand, the manufacturer’s terms are explained on your quote.

Before you call an engineer

Never try to top up, release or handle refrigerant yourself. The law requires anyone working on equipment containing F gas to hold the right qualifications, and the company to be certified, and refrigerant lines can cause cold burns. A suspected leak is our job, not yours.

Good habits make our visits easier, not unnecessary. Clean filters and a clear outdoor unit help the system run as it should, but the inside of the units, the refrigerant and the electrics still need a qualified engineer.

Witley questions

Do you cover smaller places like Witley?

Yes, and the size of the place makes no difference to how we work. A few photos and the postcode are enough to get things started.

Will a heat pump in Witley need planning permission?

It depends on the property. The Wheelerstreet Conservation Area is close to the centre of Witley. A heat pump on a house can be permitted development if it meets the conditions, including the MCS noise check, but not within the grounds of a listed building, and in a conservation area the outdoor unit cannot face a road. Where needed, we check with the local planning authority (for Witley, normally Waverley council).

Is there a survey before the work?

Yes. Every job is looked at first, either on a site survey or from photos and details for simple jobs. A fixed-price quote follows.

What’s the price of a heat pump installation?

Air-to-water work is in the £8,000–£16,000 range (0% VAT on homes), with any grant still to come off. Where you land depends on the size of heat pump, any radiators that need changing and the hot water cylinder. Air-to-air is priced after a survey.

Will my radiators work with a heat pump?

It depends on each radiator and the room it heats. Heat pumps run at lower flow temperatures, so radiators give out less heat, and the survey checks each one.

Can I fit air conditioning or a heat pump myself?

No, not the refrigerant side. The F-gas rules require certified companies and qualified engineers for it, and a new electrical circuit is notifiable building work unless a registered competent person does it.

Will you work on another installer’s system?

Yes. We start with a proper look and tell you honestly what we find, including anything about the original installation that needs putting right. Any work is priced before it goes ahead.

What a heat pump looks like in Witley

About 35% of homes in the Witley area were built before 1919, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax records, and about 76% of households live in detached or semi-detached houses, according to the last census (2021). Older homes can lose heat faster, so a room-by-room heat loss calculation, and sometimes insulation or larger radiators, comes before sizing a heat pump. Finding room for the outdoor unit and a cylinder is seldom a problem in homes like these.

If your home is one of the older properties near Church of All Saints, the survey checks whether it’s listed or in a conservation area before the outdoor unit position is chosen. If your home is listed, like Loseley Park about 4.6 miles north-east, listed building consent comes before any heat pump work.

Witley is about 7 miles south-west of Guildford, in Surrey. From the centre of Witley to the outskirts, we cover air source heat pumps, from a single room to a whole building. Witley is one of 395 towns, villages and districts in Surrey we cover. Our Guildford page covers places nearby (7 miles or so).

The closest recent job we can point to from Witley was on Bridge Road, Godalming (GU7), about 3 miles north-east: installing a Panasonic split system in the garden office and a second unit in the master bedroom.

How it works

Wherever the system can be run before we leave, we run it and check it in operation. Then we show you what we have done and answer any questions, and anything that needs attention later is pointed out. All told, the work takes anything from a couple of days for air-to-air to the best part of a week for air-to-water with radiator changes. For a place like Witley, the timing is set with you and the travel is our side of the planning.

  1. We find out about your home and the heating you have now.
  2. Every room’s heat loss is worked out on site.
  3. The design covers the heat pump, emitters, hot water and outdoor unit.
  4. Cost, grant and VAT appear on one fixed-price quote.
  5. Then it’s fitted, commissioned and registered with MCS.

Advice

After we’ve gone

Every system needs looking after, and most of it is easy. Our tips:

  • Keep the MCS certificate with the manufacturer’s paperwork
  • Diary the next service
  • Let the heat pump run steadily, as set up at handover

Once commissioned, we register the installation with MCS and give you the certificate. File it with the warranty documents, as you may need it later.

A well-insulated home helps a heat pump, as lower heat loss means the system has less to do.

System by system

Air-to-water heat pumps

Flow temperatures are lower than with a typical boiler, so radiator sizes matter.

Radiators and underfloor heating

Heat pumps run at lower flow temperatures, so radiators may need to be larger so we check them against each room’s heat loss.

A customer’s words

“Excellent service from start to finish. Two wall-mounted units installed in our home. Clean, tidy work: they protected all the floors and left no mess. The systems work brilliantly. Would highly recommend.”
