How we handle air source heat pumps in Weeke

In England, an air source heat pump on a house can often go in under permitted development rights. The conditions include an outdoor unit of no more than 1.5 m³ and compliance with MCS 020(a), and the unit cannot be used solely for cooling or sit within the curtilage of a listed building. We look at the planning position for your home during the survey. We’re often asked to deal with no space for a hot water cylinder and deciding which kind of heat pump suits the home, across hot water cylinders, air-to-water heat pumps and homes heated by oil, LPG or gas.

Cottages and older homes near Weeke can lose heat faster, so a proper heat loss calculation matters. Sometimes insulation first is the better investment.

Refrigerant work is written up in the F-Gas records: what was done, the refrigerant type and any amount added or recovered. Keep the records with the manual and the warranty documents, ready for the next service or a warranty query.

The process

Testing is the last part of the visit wherever the system can be switched on. Then we explain what was done and answer your questions, and anything that needs attention later is pointed out. The visit takes a few days for most air-to-water installations, with air-to-air systems often quicker. Photos of the existing unit and its label help with repairs and servicing near Weeke.

  1. It starts with a conversation about the home, the existing heating and your plans.
  2. We survey the home room by room for heat loss, and check the emitters, hot water and outdoor unit position.
  3. A fixed-price quote follows, setting out the system, any grant that applies and the VAT.
  4. We fit the outdoor unit and connect it to the heating, hot water and controls.
  5. Commissioning, MCS certification and a handover of the controls finish the job.

Preparing for the visit

  • Tell us about parking and loading
  • Tell us about access, such as roof hatches, high walls or locked plant areas
  • Find the manual or the paperwork for the system, if you have it

Getting a quote

Photos are enough for some jobs; others need a visit first. Bigger systems, commercial sites and awkward pipe routes are normally surveyed on site. Either way, you get a fixed price before any work is booked.

Owner checks or an engineer?

Owner care supports servicing; it doesn’t replace it. Clean filters and a clear outdoor unit help the system run as it should, but the inside of the units, the refrigerant and the electrics still need a qualified engineer.

For air conditioning, cleaning the indoor unit’s filters is the main job owners can do, if the manual says so. With the power off, they lift out, can be vacuumed or rinsed and must be fully dry before they go back. On a heat pump, the equivalent is keeping the outdoor unit clear and checking the controls.

Air source heat pumps around Weeke

About 40% of homes in and around Weeke date from 1945 to 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax records, and about 64% of households live in detached or semi-detached houses, according to the last census (2021). Homes of that age often have cavity walls that may or may not be insulated, which the survey checks. Finding room for the outdoor unit and a cylinder is seldom a problem in homes like these. Listed buildings are part of the picture here: about 5 within half a mile of the centre, such as Church of St Matthew (grade II). That affects heat pumps: listed buildings need consent, and conservation areas limit where the outdoor unit can go under permitted development. Where needed, we check with the planning team at Winchester City council, which usually handles Weeke.

Older homes near Church of St Matthew may need extra checks for planning and heat loss before a heat pump is designed.

Weeke: your questions answered

Does the Boiler Upgrade Scheme cover homes in Weeke?

Weeke is covered, as the scheme runs across England and Wales. Whether your home qualifies, and for how much, depends on the type of heat pump and the heating it replaces. You don’t apply yourself: the MCS certified installer does, which is us.

Do you cover smaller places like Weeke?

Yes. Weeke is within the area we cover across London and the South East. Visits to smaller places are planned so the engineer arrives with what the job needs.

Do I need to service the system to keep the warranty?

Each manufacturer decides. Where servicing is a condition, a missed service could give the manufacturer grounds to refuse a claim, so we explain the terms on your quote.

Do I need planning permission for a heat pump?

That depends on your home and the unit’s position. Flats have tighter limits, conservation areas add conditions, and Article 4 directions can remove rights and we look at it during the survey.

Do you provide F-Gas records?

Yes, on every job. A new system comes with commissioning details, F-Gas records and the manufacturer’s warranty information, and repairs and services get a record of the work.

Do you work on systems someone else installed?

Yes. Systems fitted by other companies are fine, on all the main brands. Send us the make and model, and any records you have.

How do you keep the place clean during the work?

We start with protection: sheets over the floor and nearby furniture. Any drilling is agreed with you first, and we clear up the dust and offcuts when we finish.

Common problems we fix in Weeke

An ageing boiler is often the moment people start thinking about a heat pump. Planning the change before the boiler fails gives you time to survey, design and apply for any grant, rather than rushing a replacement in winter.

Keep an eye out for any of the following:

  • Not knowing whether a grant applies
  • Finding a place for the outdoor unit
  • Working out whether radiators need upsizing

For a home near Winchester station, the survey looks at whether an air-to-water or air-to-air heat pump suits better.

Before you book anyone

  • Which brand and model they’re proposing, and why
  • Whether a new circuit is included and who certifies it
  • Whether the quote is a fixed price

When it’s something else

To be straight with you, there are a few things this work will not fix:

  • Tax rulings, which only HMRC can give
  • Promising eligibility for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme
  • Gas boiler work, such as disconnecting the old boiler, which needs a Gas Safe registered engineer

Not sure which it is? You can ring 07833 053749 or email us and we will tell you honestly.

From one of our customers

“Excellent service from start to finish. Two wall-mounted units installed in our home. Clean, tidy work: they protected all the floors and left no mess. The systems work brilliantly. Would highly recommend.”
