Air source heat pumps in Victoria

Installing an air source heat pump in a home is zero-rated for VAT until 31 March 2027, then 5%. That follows HMRC Notice 708/6, and it does not apply to businesses, and for air-to-air systems we confirm the VAT on your quote. This is general information, not tax advice. If you’re dealing with finding a place for the outdoor unit and questions about listed buildings or conservation areas, we can help.

In a London area like Victoria, many homes are flats or terraces with little outside space, and that decides which kind of heat pump works. Air-to-water needs room for the outdoor unit and usually a cylinder, while an air-to-air system needs less space.

Refrigerant work is written up in the F-Gas records: the work carried out, the refrigerant involved and the quantities. File them with the system’s paperwork, as a manufacturer or a future engineer may ask to see them.

Owner checks or an engineer?

Refrigerant is off limits for anyone without the right qualifications. The law requires anyone working on equipment containing F gas to hold the right qualifications, and the company to be certified, and refrigerant lines can cause cold burns. If you suspect a leak, switch the system off and call us.

On air conditioning, the filters in the indoor unit are typically the one part owners can clean, if the manual says so. With the power off, they lift out, can be vacuumed or rinsed and must be fully dry before they go back. For a heat pump, the main owner jobs are a clear outdoor unit and sensible control settings.

Air source heat pumps around Victoria

The Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures put about 48% of homes in Victoria and the neighbourhoods around it before 1919, and Census 2021 figures found about 92% of households live in flats. In older homes, the heat loss calculation is especially important, as solid walls and draughts change the size of heat pump needed. A flat may have no room for a hot water cylinder, and the freeholder typically has a say on the outdoor unit, which can tip the choice towards air-to-air. For a London home, the outdoor unit position and the MCS noise check need careful planning.

If your home is listed, like Buckingham Palace about 0.4 miles north, listed building consent comes before any heat pump work. Live in one of the older houses around St. Michael's Church? Expect the survey to look closely at heat loss and at the building’s planning status.

Looking after it afterwards

Systems last better with the right care. We suggest:

  • Check what your manufacturer’s warranty asks of you
  • Keep to regular servicing
  • Leave space around the outdoor unit

Equipment warranties come from the manufacturer. We go through the conditions with you, including any servicing they ask for.

Have the system serviced regularly. Check the manufacturer’s terms, as they may include servicing conditions.

What happens on the day

We book the visit for a day and time that suit you, and we keep you posted if anything changes. On arrival, the engineer compares the job with the survey, your pictures or the details you gave us. Anything unexpected is raised with you before we go further. From there, the work takes anything from a couple of days for air-to-air to the best part of a week for air-to-water with radiator changes. In a London area like Victoria, parking and access are worth sorting out before the day.

  1. First, a chat about the property and your goals for the heating.
  2. The survey checks heat loss, emitters, hot water and the outdoor unit position.
  3. We recommend air-to-water or air-to-air and check the grant position.
  4. We install the heat pump and connect it up.
  5. The job ends with commissioning, the MCS certificate and a walk through the controls.

Before we arrive

  • Tell us about any building rules, permits or sign-in
  • Make sure someone can let us in at the agreed time
  • Move furniture away from the wall where we will be working

Advice

Questions from Victoria

Can I get the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant in Victoria?

Victoria is in England, where the Boiler Upgrade Scheme runs. For an air-to-water heat pump the amount is £7,500; an air-to-air system can get £2,500 if it replaces the fossil-fuel heating outright, meets the home’s full heating demand and isn’t an add-on to a boiler. You don’t apply yourself: the MCS certified installer does, which is us.

Do I need planning permission for a heat pump in Victoria?

The answer turns on the property and where the outdoor unit would sit. There’s a conservation area, the Grosvenor Gardens Conservation Area, close to central Victoria. Heat pumps on houses are often permitted development, but listed buildings need consent and conservation areas restrict outdoor units facing a road. Where it’s needed, we check with the local planning authority (for Victoria, usually Westminster council).

Will I get records for the system?

Yes. It’s your proof of what was done: a dated note of the work, with refrigerant details where they apply.

Which brands do you work with?

We work with the leading brands, from Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin and Fujitsu to Panasonic, Toshiba, LG, Samsung, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Hitachi. Send us the make and model if you have it.

Do you protect the property while you work?

We start with protection: dust sheets over floors and anything close to the work. Holes and fixings are agreed with you, and we clean up afterwards before we leave.

How long does a heat pump installation take?

Expect it to take several days for an air-to-water system with a new cylinder, less for an air-to-air system. How much of the heating changes decides most of the time, and we confirm the timing with your quote.

Who is responsible for leak checks?

Responsibility is shared between the operator, normally whoever owns or controls the equipment, and the service technicians. How often depends on the size of the refrigerant charge in tonnes of CO2 equivalent: at least yearly for 5 to under 50 tCO2e, and every 6 months for 50 to under 500 tCO2e.

For landlords and property managers

Under the GB F-gas rules, responsibility for leak checks is shared between whoever operates the equipment and the engineers who work on it. Where a building is let or managed, the lease or contract should make clear who looks after the system, and we can work for either side.

Whether it’s one property or many, the approach is the same: a look at the job first, a fixed-price quote, work booked with the occupier and written records afterwards.

What a customer said

“Very professional from the initial survey through to installation. The engineer explained everything clearly and the quote was exactly what we paid. Would not hesitate to recommend AirCon Doctor.”
