FAQs for Uffington

Is a heat pump in Uffington permitted development?

The answer turns on the property and where the outdoor unit would sit. The Uffington Conservation Area is close to the centre of Uffington. On a house, an air source heat pump can often go ahead under permitted development, with an outdoor unit of no more than 1.5 cubic metres and an installation that meets MCS 020(a), which includes a noise check. Those rights don’t reach the grounds of a listed building, and conservation areas rule out walls or roofs facing a road. If that might affect you, we ask the local planning authority (for Uffington, typically Vale of White Horse council).

Is Uffington within the area you cover?

Yes. Uffington is within the area we cover across London and the South East. Visits to smaller places are planned so the engineer arrives with what the job needs.

How quickly will you reply?

The same working day. After that, we agree a survey, diagnosis or installation date that suits you, and you get a fixed price before any work goes ahead.

Do you protect the property while you work?

We start with protection: sheets over the floor and nearby furniture. Holes and fixings are agreed with you, and we clean up afterwards when we finish.

Am I eligible for a heat pump grant?

That depends on the scheme conditions, which we check for you. As the installer, we make the application where you qualify.

Is there a survey before the work?

Yes. Photos often do the job for simple work, while larger systems and faults that need testing are seen on site.

Why use an F-Gas certified company?

For refrigerant work, both the engineer and the company need the right F-gas credentials. Ask to see proof before you book anyone, and we’re happy to show ours.

Air source heat pumps in Uffington

Air-to-air heat pumps can qualify for a £2,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, but only in some cases. The system must replace the existing fossil-fuel heating and meet the home’s full heating demand, it must be installed by an MCS certified installer, and it must be in a home; adding it alongside a boiler does not qualify. Common call-outs are for checking eligibility for a heat pump grant and working out whether radiators need upsizing, across underfloor heating, hot water cylinders and air-to-water heat pumps.

In a place like Uffington, some homes are listed, because permitted development does not apply within the grounds of a listed building, so consent comes first.

Warranty on the equipment is the manufacturer’s own, on the manufacturer’s terms, and we set them out on your quote. Each brand sets its own conditions, so we go through them with you rather than leave you to find the small print.

What a heat pump looks like in Uffington

About 40% of homes in the Uffington area have been built since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax records, and about 81% of households live in detached or semi-detached houses, according to the 2021 Census. Lower heat loss in recent homes often means a smaller heat pump and fewer radiator changes. Houses usually have space for an outdoor unit and a hot water cylinder.

Ashdown House lies about 4.8 miles south. Owners of listed homes need consent before a heat pump is fitted, so it’s one of our first questions. Live in one of the older houses around Church of St Mary? Expect the survey to look closely at heat loss and at the building’s planning status.

How we price air source heat pumps

We quote each job individually. These are the things that affect it:

  • The size of the job
  • The type of system, from a single split to a larger system
  • A single visit or a regular plan

The pipe route, the height of the units and how we reach them can all change the price. Each of those is built into the quote and give you a fixed price before we start.

What to send for a quote

What to send for a quote:

  • Photos showing the indoor unit and the space around it
  • The postcode and whether it’s a home, flat or business
  • A close-up of the unit’s label showing the model number

To help us quote: the address and the type of property, a few photos, the brand and model of anything already fitted and any symptoms, from error codes to drips. Once you have those, phone 07833 053749, or email if that’s easier.

Why deal with it now?

A sudden boiler failure rarely leaves room to plan a heat pump properly. Surveying and designing in advance means the system is sized right and any grant is applied for before you need the heat. A dirty or faulty system works harder and costs more to run.

Putting the work off seldom saves money. Small problems, from blocked filters to slow leaks, tend to get worse, and a system working harder than it should costs more to run. If you’re unsure, ring us on 07833 053749 or write to us at info@aircondoctor.co.uk for straight advice and a fixed price.

How it works

If the system has to be off for part of the visit, we tell you before we start, so you can plan around it. In a business, work can often be done one area at a time. The work takes a few days on site, depending on the cylinder, the radiators and the pipework involved. If a lane or gateway near Uffington is tight for a van, let us know and we will plan for it.

  1. First we talk through the property and the current system.
  2. Every room’s heat loss is worked out on site.
  3. The design covers the heat pump, emitters, hot water and outdoor unit.
  4. A fixed-price quote explains the cost, the grant position and the VAT.
  5. Installation, commissioning and MCS registration complete the job.

Preparing for the visit

  • Find the manual or the paperwork for the system, if you have it
  • Mention any managing agent or landlord rules we need to follow
  • Arrange for someone to be there to let us in

Before you call an engineer

Never try to top up, release or handle refrigerant yourself. The law requires anyone working on equipment containing F gas to hold the right qualifications, and the company to be certified, and refrigerant lines can cause cold burns. If you suspect a leak, switch the system off and call us.

Good habits make our visits easier, not unnecessary. Clean filters and a clear outdoor unit help the system run as it should, but the inside of the units, the refrigerant and the electrics still need a qualified engineer.

A customer’s words

“Office air con broke down in the July heatwave. Called at 8am, engineer was here by noon and fixed within 2 hours. Brilliant emergency response. They now hold the service contract for the whole building.”
