How we handle air source heat pumps in The Platt
An air-to-water heat pump costs £8,000–£16,000 (0% VAT on homes), before the grant. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme can provide £7,500 towards an eligible air-to-water system in England and Wales, and as the installer we apply for it on your behalf. Eligibility depends on the property, so we confirm it before anything is agreed. The work covers underfloor heating, hot water cylinders and air-to-water heat pumps, and the jobs we see most are working out where a cylinder could go and choosing between air-to-water and air-to-air.
For a home around The Platt that’s off mains gas and heated by oil or LPG, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme adds an extra £1,500 until March 2027 for an air source or ground source heat pump.
We are an F-Gas certified company, NICEIC approved for electrical work, with MCS certification for heat pumps and Checkatrade membership. Our engineers hold the F-gas qualifications needed to work on refrigerant.

How the visit works
On the day, we arrive at the time agreed with you and run through the plan before anything else. Floors and furniture near the work are covered with dust sheets, and the electrics are made safe before any panel comes off. On site, it takes anything from a couple of days for air-to-air to the best part of a week for air-to-water with radiator changes. Visits to The Platt are agreed with you in advance and planned so the job can be finished in one trip where possible.
- First we talk through the property and the current system.
- A heat loss survey is carried out, room by room.
- From those figures we size the heat pump and decide on radiators, cylinder and outdoor position.
- Cost, grant and VAT appear on one fixed-price quote.
- We install, commission and register the system under MCS.
Getting ready for the visit
- Make sure someone can let us in at the agreed time
- Let us know if the units are on a roof, a high wall or in a locked area
- Keep pets out of the rooms we are working in

What a heat pump looks like in The Platt
About 38% of homes in the The Platt area were built before 1919, according to the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures. Older homes can lose heat faster, so a room-by-room heat loss calculation, and sometimes insulation or larger radiators, comes before sizing a heat pump. On the National Heritage List, around 5 entries fall within 0.5 miles of the middle of The Platt; Myrtle Cottage (grade II) is one. So the heat pump survey asks two extra questions here: is the home listed, and is it inside a conservation area?
With Wadhurst Castle about 3 miles south-east, it’s worth asking whether your own home is listed before planning a heat pump. Older homes near The Parish Church of St Alban may need extra checks for planning and heat loss before a heat pump is designed.

Not far from The Platt, a recent job of ours was on Beacon Road, Crowborough (TN6), about 5 miles south-west: installing a Mitsubishi Electric multi-split system serving four bedrooms and a large home office.

The Platt: your questions answered
Is The Platt within the area you cover?
Yes, and the size of the place makes no difference to how we work. Visits to smaller places are planned so the engineer arrives with what the job needs.
Does the Boiler Upgrade Scheme cover homes in The Platt?
Yes, the scheme covers homes in England, including The Platt, if they qualify. For an air-to-water heat pump the amount is £7,500; an air-to-air system can get £2,500 if it replaces the fossil-fuel heating outright, meets the home’s full heating demand and isn’t an add-on to a boiler. The installer applies, and we’re MCS certified.
Can landlords and managing agents book you?
Yes. Homeowners, landlords, agents and businesses all book us across London and the South East. Tell us who should receive the paperwork.
Who is responsible for leak checks?
Responsibility is shared between the operator, usually whoever owns or controls the equipment, and the service technicians. How often depends on the size of the refrigerant charge in tonnes of CO2 equivalent: at least yearly for 5 to under 50 tCO2e, and every 6 months for 50 to under 500 tCO2e.
Do I get paperwork after the visit?
Yes. It’s your proof of what was done: the date, the work, and any refrigerant added or recovered.
How does the warranty work?
The manufacturer’s warranty, on the manufacturer’s terms. Each brand sets its own conditions and periods, so we explain them on your quote.
Which brands do you work with?
Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin, Fujitsu, Panasonic, Toshiba, LG, Samsung, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Hitachi and others. For a new system, we suggest the make and model that suit the property and explain why.
Safe owner checks
Write down what you notice: error codes, noises, drips, smells or a drop in performance. It makes our diagnosis quicker, and a photo or a short video of the display is even better.
For air conditioning, cleaning the indoor unit’s filters is the main job owners can do, if the manual says so. They come out, get a gentle clean and go back only when they’re dry. For a heat pump, the main owner jobs are a clear outdoor unit and sensible control settings.
Looking after your system
How well a system lasts depends on use and care. Here’s what we suggest:
- Use the settings explained at handover
- Keep up with insulation and draught-proofing
- File the MCS certificate safely
We show you how to use the controls and explain how a heat pump works differently from a boiler. Steady running suits a heat pump better than switching on and off so we set the controls up with you.
Let the heat pump run steadily rather than switching it on and off, using the settings agreed at handover.
A customer’s words
“Very professional from the initial survey through to installation. The engineer explained everything clearly and the quote was exactly what we paid. Would not hesitate to recommend AirCon Doctor.”
