About our air source heat pumps in Town Row
A £2,500 grant is available for some air-to-air heat pumps, with conditions. It has to replace the fossil-fuel heating, cover the whole heating demand, be fitted by an MCS certified installer and be in a home; adding it alongside a boiler doesn’t qualify. We’re often asked to deal with plans to switch to electric heating with a heat pump and checking emitters for a heat pump, across air-to-water heat pumps, underfloor heating and radiator systems.
Homes around Town Row usually have room outside for a heat pump, so the design comes down to heat loss, radiators and hot water.
For a fault on a system that may still be under warranty, send us the make, model and installation date. We’ll explain how the manufacturer’s terms are likely to apply before any chargeable work goes ahead.

The process
There’s very little for you to do on the day. Someone needs to let us in and show us the units, or where they’re going, and the rest is down to us. At the end, we tidy up and run through the work with you. Visits to Town Row are agreed with you in advance and planned so the job can be finished in one trip where possible.
- You tell us about the home and what you want from a heat pump.
- A survey covers heat loss, radiators, hot water and where the outdoor unit could sit.
- We explain which type of heat pump suits the home and whether a grant could apply.
- We install the heat pump and connect it up.
- The job ends with commissioning, the MCS certificate and a walk through the controls.
Preparing for the visit
- Dig out any previous service or F-Gas records
- Keep pets and children away from the work area
- Tell us about access, such as roof hatches, high walls or locked plant areas

Advice
Town Row: your questions answered
Do I need planning permission for a heat pump in Town Row?
There’s no single answer: the building and the outdoor unit position decide it. Historic England lists about 10 buildings and structures within half a mile of the centre of Town Row. On a house, an air source heat pump can often go ahead under permitted development, with an outdoor unit of no more than 1.5 cubic metres and an installation that meets MCS 020(a), which includes a noise check. Those rights don’t reach the grounds of a listed building, and conservation areas rule out walls or roofs facing a road. If that might affect you, we ask Wealden council, which is normally the planning authority for Town Row.
Is Town Row within the area you cover?
We do. Villages and hamlets get the same service as the bigger towns. Send a few details and photos, and we reply the same working day.
Do I get paperwork after the visit?
Yes. It’s your proof of what was done: the date, the work, and any refrigerant added or recovered.
Will my home qualify for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?
Quite possibly. In England and Wales it pays £7,500 for an eligible air-to-water or ground source heat pump, and £2,500 for air-to-air under tighter rules. Until March 2027 there’s an extra £1,500 for air source or ground source heat pumps in homes on oil or LPG with no mains gas. The survey is where we check your home against them.
How long does a heat pump installation take?
As a guide, it takes several days for an air-to-water system with a new cylinder, less for an air-to-air system. The programme is planned to keep time without heating short, and we explain it in advance.
What accreditations do you have?
F-Gas certified, NICEIC approved and MCS certified for heat pumps, and we are Checkatrade members. Engineers who handle refrigerant hold their own F-gas qualifications as well.
Does servicing affect my warranty?
That depends on the brand. If servicing is in the terms, missing one could affect a claim, so we explain the terms on your quote.
What we’re called out for in Town Row
Extensions, renovations and loft conversions are a natural time to rethink the heating. Pipework, radiators and space for a cylinder are easier to plan while work is going on.
If any of these sounds familiar, it’s worth a diagnosis:
- Choosing between air-to-water and air-to-air
- No space for a hot water cylinder
- Planning and permitted development questions
Historic houses such as Wadhurst Castle, about 4.4 miles east, are a reminder that listed homes need consent before a heat pump goes in.
Questions to ask before you book
- Whether extra work needs your approval first
- If the quote is based on a survey, photos or a diagnosis
- Proof of F-Gas company certification
Different systems, different jobs
Hot water cylinders
An older cylinder may not suit a heat pump, and we explain whether yours can stay.
Air-to-air heat pumps
The £2,500 grant for air-to-air applies only when the system replaces the fossil-fuel heating and covers the whole home’s demand. It also has to be fitted by an MCS certified installer, in a home.
Looking after it afterwards
How well a system lasts depends on use and care. Here’s what we suggest:
- Book a yearly service
- Avoid switching the heat pump on and off often
- Keep the outdoor unit clear all year
If anything does not seem right after installation, phone us on 07833 053749 or email us and we will look into it. A yearly service is a good habit.
Do not cover radiators with furniture or heavy curtains, as the system relies on them giving out heat.
Homes in Town Row and heat pumps
The last census (2021) found about 69% of households in detached or semi-detached houses. Finding room for the outdoor unit and a cylinder is seldom a problem in homes like these.
If your home is one of the older properties near The Parish Church of St Denys, the survey checks whether it’s listed or in a conservation area before the outdoor unit position is chosen.
