How we handle air source heat pumps in The City
Hot water from an air-to-water system is stored in a cylinder. Homes with a combi boiler may not have a cylinder, so finding space for one is part of the survey. With air-to-air, hot water has to come from something else. We are often asked to deal with checking eligibility for a heat pump grant and plans to switch to electric heating with a heat pump, across underfloor heating, hot water cylinders and homes heated by oil, LPG or gas.
For a home around The City that’s off mains gas and heated by oil or LPG, an extra £1,500 is available through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme until March 2027, on top of the £7,500.
Whatever the visit, you get a written record: commissioning details for an installation, a fault and repair note for a repair, or a record of the service. File it with the manual so it’s to hand next time.

Questions from The City
Can I fit a heat pump in The City without planning permission?
It depends on the property. The half-mile around the middle of The City holds about 6 listed buildings and structures. Heat pumps on houses are often permitted development, but listed buildings need consent and conservation areas restrict outdoor units facing a road. Where it’s needed, we check with Buckinghamshire council, which is normally the planning authority for The City.
Is the heat pump grant available in The City?
The City is in England, where the Boiler Upgrade Scheme runs. Whether your home qualifies, and for how much, depends on the type of heat pump and the heating it replaces. You do not apply yourself: the MCS certified installer does, which is us.
Why does F-Gas certification matter?
Certification shows a business is approved to work on systems that hold F gas refrigerant. In Great Britain, that certification is a legal requirement, not an optional extra, and AirCon Doctor is certified.
How long does a heat pump installation take?
An installation takes anything from a couple of days for air-to-air to the best part of a week for air-to-water with radiator changes. We confirm the timing after the survey, so call us on 07833 053749 or drop us a line to arrange one.
Can you set up regular servicing?
Yes. We offer maintenance contracts, with visits at the interval your system and the manufacturer need. Every visit is recorded, with F-Gas records where refrigerant work is involved.
Which manufacturers do you install and repair?
Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin, Fujitsu, Panasonic, Toshiba, LG, Samsung, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Hitachi and others. For a new system, we suggest the make and model that suit the property and tell you why.
What accreditations do you have?
We hold F-Gas company certification, which the law requires for any business working on refrigerant. NICEIC approval, MCS certification for heat pumps and Checkatrade membership sit alongside it.
Heat pumps in The City: local notes
The 2021 Census found about 81% of households in detached or semi-detached houses. Houses usually have space for an outdoor unit and a hot water cylinder.
If your home is listed, like West Wycombe Park House about 2.7 miles south-east, listed building consent comes before any heat pump work. If your home is one of the older properties near Church of St Paul, the survey checks whether it’s listed or in a conservation area before the outdoor unit position is chosen.

System by system
Outdoor unit position and planning
Where the outdoor unit goes depends on airflow, access and the route into the house. We also consider neighbours and noise, as MCS 020(a) includes a noise check.
VAT on heat pumps
HMRC says most air conditioning units are air source heat pumps, but each case depends on the facts and the VAT is confirmed on your quote.
Aftercare tips
To keep the system working properly:
- Avoid switching the heat pump on and off often
- Leave space around the outdoor unit
- Look at insulation alongside the heat pump
In cold, damp weather the outdoor unit runs a defrost cycle from time to time. You might see steam or hear the unit change note and it’s part of how the system works.
Leave space around the outdoor unit. It needs good airflow to collect heat from outside so keep it unobstructed.
What we do, step by step
Where something has to be switched off during the work, we agree it with you first, so you can plan around it. For businesses, we can normally work room by room or zone by zone. On site, it takes anything from a couple of days for air-to-air to the best part of a week for air-to-water with radiator changes. Visits to The City are agreed with you in advance and planned so the job can be finished in one trip where possible.
- We find out about your home and the heating you have now.
- Every room’s heat loss is worked out on site.
- We design the system, check the radiators and cylinder and look at the outdoor unit position.
- You get a fixed price, with any grant and the VAT set out.
- We install, commission and register the system under MCS.
Before we arrive
- Plan for pets to be kept clear during the visit
- Make sure someone can let us in at the agreed time
- Dig out any previous service or F-Gas records
Getting a quote
Photos are enough for some jobs; others need a visit first. Bigger systems, commercial sites and awkward pipe routes are normally surveyed on site. Either way, the quote is fixed before anything goes ahead.

“Office air con broke down in the July heatwave. Called at 8am, engineer was here by noon and fixed within 2 hours. Brilliant emergency response. They now hold the service contract for the whole building.”
